The different text with the same story:
I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One, on a wandering tour among the Kosalans with a large community of monks, arrived at Kesaputta, a town of the Kalamas. The Kalamas of Kesaputta heard it said, "Gotama the contemplative — the son of the Sakyans, having gone forth from the Sakyan clan — has arrived at Kesaputta. And of that Master Gotama this fine reputation has spread: 'He is indeed a Blessed One, worthy, & rightly self-awakened, consummate in knowledge & conduct, well-gone, a knower of the cosmos, an unexcelled trainer of those persons ready to be tamed, teacher of human & divine beings, awakened, blessed. He has made known — having realized it through direct knowledge — this world with its devas, maras, & brahmas, its generations with their contemplatives & priests, their rulers & common people; has explained the Dhamma admirable in the beginning, admirable in the middle, admirable in the end; has expounded the holy life both in its particulars & in its essence, entirely perfect, surpassingly pure. It is good to see such a worthy one.'"
So the Kalamas of Kesaputta went to the Blessed One. On arrival, some of them bowed down to him and sat to one side. Some of them exchanged courteous greetings with him and, after an exchange of friendly greetings & courtesies, sat to one side. Some of them sat to one side having saluted him with their hands palm-to-palm over their hearts. Some of them sat to one side having announced their name & clan. Some of them sat to one side in silence.
As they sat there, the Kalamas of Kesaputta said to the Blessed One, "Lord, there are some priests & contemplatives who come to Kesaputta. They expound & glorify their own doctrines, but as for the doctrines of others, they deprecate them, revile them, show contempt for them, & disparage them. And then other priests & contemplatives come to Kesaputta. They expound & glorify their own doctrines, but as for the doctrines of others, they deprecate them, revile them, show contempt for them, & disparage them. They leave us absolutely uncertain & in doubt: Which of these venerable priests & contemplatives are speaking the truth, and which ones are lying?"

Kesariyais a town inBihar,Indiain the district of EastChamparan, near Rampur Khajuria (NH28). It is the site of astupabuilt by theMauryankingAshoka.Buddhist legendsAncient Kesariya was called Kesaputta and was a republic ruled by Kalamas, which was later annexed by its monarchical neighbour Kosala. Alara Kalama, the teacher of Buddha beforeenlightenment, is said to belong to Kesaputta. Buddha is also said to have had direct connection with Kesaputta. According to Jataka stories Buddha ruled this place as a Chakravartin Raja in his previous birth. Similarly, it was during one of his visits to Kesaputta that Buddha gave one of his most important discourses, the celebrated Kessaputtiya Sutta, popularly known as Kalama Sutta. Kesariya stupa is believed to have been built to honor the place where Lord Buddha had spent the last days of his journey, before attaining Nirvana. It is said that on his last journey to Pawa Lord Buddha handed over his begging bowl to the following Lichhivis, people of Vaishali and requested them to go back to Vaishali. To venerate the end life of Lord Buddha, the Lichhivis are said to have built this stupa. While formerly, it was only a mud stupa, it gained its present structure in the Maurya, Sunga and Kushana period. Huien Tsang mentions having seen the grandStupa in Kia-shi-po-lo (Kesariya) but it was deserted and vegetation had overgrown.In the 1998 excavation, the place around the stupa was found to house significant items, like Islamic coins, arrow heads, copper and terracotta items, earthen lamps, decorated bricks, etc. A number of images of Lord Buddha, in ‘Bhoomi Sparsh Mudra’ and other sitting postures, were also found.[citation needed]Kesaria StupaThe stupa was discovered in 1958 during an excavation led byArchaeologistKK MuhammedofArchaeological Survey of India(ASI). 12. Buddha teaches that all Phenomena is soulless.
When a thing is impermanent, as all conditioned things are, and thus susceptible to change, there can be no overlord or Self. Helpless in arranging things according to its wishes there can be no soul as master over mind and body. The Buddha explains the soullessness of beings to the five bhikkhus at Isipatana in Benares, in the discourse on soullessness (Anattalakkana Sutta).
13. Freedom of thought.
At times referred to as the Buddha's Charter of Free inquiry this discourse was given by the Buddha to the Brahmin Kalamas at Kesaputta. 2500 years ago, preaching against blind belief in Buddha gave prominence to and encouraged the spirit of free inquiry and independence of thought and action, subject to sound judgment. He trained his disciples in the art of questioning as well as in the finer points of debate and discussion. Pointing out the dangers of haphazard thinking the Buddha teaches the Kalamas the art of reasoning for the sole purpose of arriving at true understanding of the Buddha's teaching of the Four Noble Truths.

"Om Mani Padme Hum" first known description of the mantra appears in the Karandavyuha Sutra (佛說大乘莊嚴寶王經/ The Buddha Teaches the Sutra of Mahayana King's Sublime Treasure), which is part of certain Mahayana canons such as the Tibetan's. It was stated inside the sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha said, "This is the most beneficial mantra, even I made this aspiration to all the million Buddhas and subsequently received this teaching from the Buddha Amitabha." This text is first dated to around the late 4th century CE to the early 5th century CE.
"The Powers of the Six Syllables"
The six syllables perfect the Six Paramitas of the Bodhisattvas.
Gen Rinpoche, in his commentary on the Meaning of said:
"The mantra Om Mani Pädme Hum is easy to say yet quite powerful,
because it contains the essence of the entire teaching. When you say
the first syllable :
"Om" it is blessed to help you achieve perfection in the
practice of generosity,
"Ma" helps perfect the practice of pure ethics, and
"Ni" helps achieve perfection in the practice of tolerance and patience.
"Päd", the fourth syllable, helps to achieve perfection of perseverance,
"Me" helps achieve perfection in the practice of concentration, and the final sixth syllable "Hum" helps achieve perfection in the practice of wisdom.
So in this way recitation of the mantra helps achieve perfection in the six practices from generosity to wisdom. The path of these six perfections is the path walked by all the Buddhas of the three times. What could then be more meaningful than to say the mantra and accomplish the six perfections?"
The six syllables purify the six realms of existence in suffering.

He delivers in response a sermon that serves as an entry point to the Buddhadhamma for those unconvinced by mere spectacular revelation.

Descrição "Om Mani Padme Hum" primeiro conhecido do mantra aparece no Karandavyuha Sutra (佛說 大乘 莊嚴 寶 王 經 / O Buda ensina o Sutra do Mahayana Rei Sublime Tesouro), que faz parte de certos cânones Mahayana, como a do tibetano.

Buddhism presents a greater challenge: We are the arbiters of what is true. However, that doesn't mean that we can choose to believe whatever we like.
The Buddha's teachings on judging truth are found in the Kalama Sutta. The Kalama Sutta (or Sutra) is found in the oldest Buddhist scripture, the Tripitaka (in the Anguttara Nikaya, which is in the Sutra-pitaka). The Kalama Sutta has gained great favor in the West because of its advice to question authority and rely on oneself.

Most of the year, like many holy teachers of his time, the Buddha walked from village to village teaching answering questions and talking with also to people. One day, together with some of his followers, the Buddha arrived at the town KESAPUTTA, home of the KALAMA people. The news spread Buddha's arrival. "The Buddha is here!" and The enlighten one is here. They have heard about the teacher, a man famous for his great wisdom. Everyone wanted to see him. Respectfully they sat down around him. They had a burning question.
Sir, we often have visits of holly teachers. Each one tells us how to live our lives. Each one tells us that they are right and the other teachers are wrong. Some say if you want to be happy, it is important to burn the right kind of incense every evening.
Another holly teachers come along with their ideas and say they are right and the other teachers are stupid. We dont know who to believe. How can we tell which one is speaking the truth?
I am not surprised about you are confused because this is indeed a difficult question. It is important not to believe what someone tells you, just because lots of other people think like that. Or because it is traditional, or because there are rumours about it. Dont believe someone because they seem to know the scriptures very well, or because they have strong opinions. Also dont believe what someone says where there is no evidence. or without much discussion, or just because it sounds familiar. You cant even just believe someone who seems knowledgeable and well educated, even if you feel respect for them as your teacher. The only way to know whether some is speaking the truth is to test their advice in your own experience. Then if you feel really sure that the teaching is likely to cause harm or unhappiness you should reject it. If following a teacher's advice make you feel greedy or angry or full of hatred, or confusion, is that helpful? No. Certainly not.
Ask yourself how things might turn out if you follow a particular piece of advice? For example, if you take things which arnt yours, are you likely to cause harm to yourself or others? If you speak untruthfully, or cloud your mind with drinks or drugs are you likely to harm to yourself or others?
You can also think of someone more experienced than you whose opinion you already respect . What would they think of this teaching? If you really think following a particular piece of advice would help you and others become happy, then go ahead. Follow that advice. If you found that following a particular adivice helped you to avoid greed, hatred and confusion such a teaching would be helpful. Wouldn't it? - Yes, it certainly would.
A person who is free from greed, hatred and confusion, will feel much better.
If your mind is free and peaceful, and your heart is full of love and compassion for the whole world, you will experience great comfort and happiness.
I have asked you to look into own experience to decide whether something worth following or not.
But when it comes to what happen after death, its not possible to do this, is it?
There are so many views and opinions but how can we know in our own experience?
However, remember what I have told you today. Living ethically, with kindness and wisdom leads to happiness and well being. This is true for this life. And if there are future lives, it would be true for those too.
So regardless of what you believe, the important thing is that you are trying to live with a clear mind and a kind heart and you can see the consequences of your actions for yourselves and others around you.

The KALAMAS were so impressed and grateful about the Buddha's answer. They decided to go home and live by. his teachings.

"Om Mani Padme Hum" first known description of the mantra appears in the Karandavyuha Sutra (佛說大乘莊嚴寶王經/ The Buddha Teaches the Sutra of Mahayana King's Sublime Treasure), which is part of certain Mahayana canons such as the Tibetan's. It was stated inside the sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha said, "This is the most beneficial mantra, even I made this aspiration to all the million Buddhas and subsequently received this teaching from the Buddha Amitabha." This text is first dated to around the late 4th century CE to the early 5th century CE.
"The Powers of the Six Syllables"
The six syllables perfect the Six Paramitas of the Bodhisattvas.
Gen Rinpoche, in his commentary on the Meaning of said:
"The mantra Om Mani Pädme Hum is easy to say yet quite powerful,
because it contains the essence of the entire teaching.
When you say the first syllable :
"Om" it is blessed to help you achieve perfection in the
practice of generosity,
"Ma" helps perfect the practice of pure ethics, and
"Ni" helps achieve perfection in the practice of tolerance and patience.
"Päd", the fourth syllable, helps to achieve perfection of perseverance,
"Me" helps achieve perfection in the practice of concentration, and the final sixth syllable "Hum" helps achieve perfection in the practice of wisdom.
So in this way recitation of the mantra helps achieve perfection in the six practices from generosity to wisdom. The path of these six perfections is the path walked by all the Buddhas of the three times. What could then be more meaningful than to say the mantra and accomplish the six perfections?"
The six syllables purify the six realms of existence in suffering.

Kesaria
Kesariya is a town in Bihar, India in the district of East Champaran, near Rampur Khajuria (NH28). It is the site of a stupa built by the Mauryan king Ashoka.
Buddhist legends
Ancient Kesariya was called Kesaputta and was a republic ruled by Kalamas, which was later annexed by its monarchical neighbour Kosala. Alara Kalama, the teacher of Buddha before enlightenment, is said to belong to Kesaputta. Buddha is also said to have had direct connection with Kesaputta. According to Jataka stories Buddha ruled this place as a Chakravartin Raja in his previous birth. Similarly, it was during one of his visits to Kesaputta that Buddha gave one of his most important discourses, the celebrated Kessaputtiya Sutta, popularly known as Kalama Sutta. Kesariya stupa is believed to have been built to honor the place where Lord Buddha had spent the last days of his journey, before attaining Nirvana. It is said that on his last journey to Pawa Lord Buddha handed over his begging bowl to the following Lichhivis, people of Vaishali and requested them to go back to Vaishali. To venerate the end life of Lord Buddha, the Lichhivis are said to have built this stupa. While formerly, it was only a mud stupa, it gained its present structure in the Maurya, Sunga and Kushana period. Huien Tsang mentions having seen the grand Stupa in Kia-shi-po-lo (Kesariya) but it was deserted and vegetation had overgrown.

The different text with the same story: I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One, on a wandering tour among the Kosalans with a large community of monks, arrived at Kesaputta, a town of the Kalamas. The Kalamas of Kesaputta heard it said, "Gotama the contemplative — the son of the Sakyans, having gone forth from the Sakyan clan — has arrived at Kesaputta. And of that Master Gotama this fine reputation has spread: 'He is indeed a Blessed One, worthy, & rightly self-awakened, consummate in knowledge & conduct, well-gone, a knower of the cosmos, an unexcelled trainer of those persons ready to be tamed, teacher of human & divine beings, awakened, blessed. He has made known — having realized it through direct knowledge — this world with its devas, maras, & brahmas, its generations with their contemplatives & priests, their rulers & common people; has explained the Dhamma admirable in the beginning, admirable in the middle, admirable in the end; has expounded the holy life both in its particulars & in its essence, entirely perfect, surpassingly pure. It is good to see such a worthy one.'" So the Kalamas of Kesaputta went to the Blessed One. On arrival, some of them bowed down to him and sat to one side. Some of them exchanged courteous greetings with him and, after an exchange of friendly greetings & courtesies, sat to one side. Some of them sat to one side having saluted him with their hands palm-to-palm over their hearts. Some of them sat to one side having announced their name & clan. Some of them sat to one side in silence. As they sat there, the Kalamas of Kesaputta said to the Blessed One, "Lord, there are some priests & contemplatives who come to Kesaputta. They expound & glorify their own doctrines, but as for the doctrines of others, they deprecate them, revile them, show contempt for them, & disparage them. And then other priests & contemplatives come to Kesaputta. 12. Buddha teaches that all Phenomena is soulless. When a thing is impermanent, as all conditioned things are, and thus susceptible to change, there can be no overlord or Self. Buddhism presents a greater challenge: We are the arbiters of what is true. However, that doesn't mean that we can choose to believe whatever we like. The Buddha's teachings on judging truth are found in the Kalama Sutta. The Kalama Sutta (or Sutra) is found in the oldest Buddhist scripture, the Tripitaka (in the Anguttara Nikaya, which is in the Sutra-pitaka). The Kalama Sutta has gained great favor in the West because of its advice to question authority and rely on oneself. Transcript: Most of the year, like many holy teachers of his time, the Buddha walked from village to village teaching answering questions and talking with also to people. One day, together with some of his followers, the Buddha arrived at the town KESAPUTTA, home of the KALAMA people. The news spread Buddha's arrival. "The Buddha is here!" and The enlighten one is here. They have heard about the teacher, a man famous for his great wisdom. Everyone wanted to see him. Respectfully they sat down around him. They had a burning question. Sir, we often have visits of holly teachers. Each one tells us how to live our lives. Each one tells us that they are right and the other teachers are wrong. Some say if you want to be happy, it is important to burn the right kind of incense every evening. Another holly teachers come along with their ideas and say they are right and the other teachers are stupid. We dont know who to believe. How can we tell which one is speaking the truth? I am not surprised about you are confused because this is indeed a difficult question. It is important not to believe what someone tells you, just because lots of other people think like that. Or because it is traditional, or because there are rumours about it. Dont believe someone because they seem to know the scriptures very well, or because they have strong opinions. Also dont believe what someone says where there is no evidence. or without much discussion, or just because it sounds familiar. You cant even just believe someone who seems knowledgeable and well educated, even if you feel respect for them as your teacher. The only way to know whether some is speaking the truth is to test their advice in your own experience. Then if you feel really sure that the teaching is likely to cause harm or unhappiness you should reject it. If following a teacher's advice make you feel greedy or angry or full of hatred, or confusion, is that helpful? No. Certainly not. Ask yourself how things might turn out if you follow a particular piece of advice? For example, if you take things which arnt yours, are you likely to cause harm to yourself or others? If you speak untruthfully, or cloud your mind with drinks or drugs are you likely to harm to yourself or others? You can also think of someone more experienced than you whose opinion you already respect . What would they think of this teaching? If you really think following a particular piece of advice would help you and others become happy, then go ahead. Follow that advice. If you found that following a particular adivice helped you to avoid greed, hatred and confusion such a teaching would be helpful. Wouldn't it? - Yes, it certainly would. A person who is free from greed, hatred and confusion, will feel much better. If your mind is free and peaceful, and your heart is full of love and compassion for the whole world, you will experience great comfort and happiness. I have asked you to look into own experience to decide whether something worth following or not. But when it comes to what happen after death, its not possible to do this, is it? There are so many views and opinions but how can we know in our own experience? However, remember what I have told you today. Living ethically, with kindness and wisdom leads to happiness and well being. This is true for this life. And if there are future lives, it would be true for those too. So regardless of what you believe, the important thing is that you are trying to live with a clear mind and a kind heart and you can see the consequences of your actions for yourselves and others around you. "Om Mani Padme Hum" first known description of the mantra appears in the Karandavyuha Sutra (佛說大乘莊嚴寶王經/ The Buddha Teaches the Sutra of Mahayana King's Sublime Treasure), which is part of certain Mahayana canons such as the Tibetan's. It was stated inside the sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha said, "This is the most beneficial mantra, even I made this aspiration to all the million Buddhas and subsequently received this teaching from the Buddha Amitabha." I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One, on a wandering tour among the Kosalans with a large community of monks, arrived at Kesaputta, a town of the Kalamas. The Kalamas of Kesaputta heard it said, "Gotama the contemplative — the son of the Sakyans, having gone forth from the Sakyan clan — has arrived at Kesaputta. And of that Master Gotama this fine reputation has spread: 'He is indeed a Blessed One, worthy, & rightly self-awakened, consummate in knowledge & conduct, well-gone, a knower of the cosmos, an unexcelled trainer of those persons ready to be tamed, teacher of human & divine beings, awakened, blessed. He has made known — having realized it through direct knowledge — this world with its devas, maras, & brahmas, its generations with their contemplatives & priests, their rulers & common people; has explained the Dhamma admirable in the beginning, admirable in the middle, admirable in the end; has expounded the holy life both in its particulars & in its essence, entirely perfect, surpassingly pure. It is good to see such a worthy one.'"
So the Kalamas of Kesaputta went to the Blessed One. On arrival, some of them bowed down to him and sat to one side. Some of them exchanged courteous greetings with him and, after an exchange of friendly greetings & courtesies, sat to one side. Some of them sat to one side having saluted him with their hands palm-to-palm over their hearts. Some of them sat to one side having announced their name & clan. Some of them sat to one side in silence.
As they sat there, the Kalamas of Kesaputta said to the Blessed One, "Lord, there are some priests & contemplatives who come to Kesaputta. They expound & glorify their own doctrines, but as for the doctrines of others, they deprecate them, revile them, show contempt for them, & disparage them. And then other priests & contemplatives come to Kesaputta. They expound & glorify their own doctrines, but as for the doctrines of others, they deprecate them, revile them, show contempt for them, & disparage them. They leave us absolutely uncertain & in doubt: Which of these venerable priests & contemplatives are speaking the truth, and which ones are lying?"

Kesariya stupa is believed to have been built to honor the place where Lord Buddha had spent the last days of his journey, before attaining Nirvana. When a thing is impermanent, as all conditioned things are, and thus susceptible to change, there can be no overlord or Self. Helpless in arranging things according to its wishes there can be no soul as master over mind and body. The Buddha explains the soullessness of beings to the five bhikkhus at Isipatana in Benares, in the discourse on soullessness (Anattalakkana Sutta).
13. Freedom of thought.
At times referred to as the Buddha's Charter of Free inquiry this discourse was given by the Buddha to the Brahmin Kalamas at Kesaputta. 2500 years ago, preaching against blind belief in Buddha gave prominence to and encouraged the spirit of free inquiry and independence of thought and action, subject to sound judgment. He trained his disciples in the art of questioning as well as in the finer points of debate and discussion. Pointing out the dangers of haphazard thinking the Buddha teaches the Kalamas the art of reasoning for the sole purpose of arriving at true understanding of the Buddha's teaching of the Four Noble Truths.

Do not believe in anything because it is written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
But after observation and analysis,
when you find that anything agrees with reason
and is conducive to the good and the benefit of one and all,
then accept it and live up to it ~
The sutta starts off by describing how the Buddha passes through the village of Kesaputta and is greeted by its inhabitants, a clan called the Kalamas. They ask for his advice: they say that many wandering holy men and ascetics pass through, expounding their teachings and criticizing the teachings of others. So whose teachings should they follow? He delivers in response a sermon that serves as an entry point to the Buddhadhamma for those unconvinced by mere spectacular revelation.

"The Powers of the Six Syllables"
The six syllables perfect the Six Paramitas of the Bodhisattvas.
Gen Rinpoche, in his commentary on the Meaning of said:
"The mantra Om Mani Pädme Hum is easy to say yet quite powerful,
because it contains the essence of the entire teaching. When you say
the first syllable :
"Om" it is blessed to help you achieve perfection in the
practice of generosity,
"Ma" helps perfect the practice of pure ethics, and
"Ni" helps achieve perfection in the practice of tolerance and patience.
"Päd", the fourth syllable, helps to achieve perfection of perseverance,
"Me" helps achieve perfection in the practice of concentration, and the final sixth syllable "Hum" helps achieve perfection in the practice of wisdom.
So in this way recitation of the mantra helps achieve perfection in the six practices from generosity to wisdom. The path of these six perfections is the path walked by all the Buddhas of the three times. What could then be more meaningful than to say the mantra and accomplish the six perfections?"
The six syllables purify the six realms of existence in suffering.

Buddhism presents a greater challenge: We are the arbiters of what is true. However, that doesn't mean that we can choose to believe whatever we like.
The Buddha's teachings on judging truth are found in the Kalama Sutta. The Kalama Sutta (or Sutra) is found in the oldest Buddhist scripture, the Tripitaka (in the Anguttara Nikaya, which is in the Sutra-pitaka). The Kalama Sutta has gained great favor in the West because of its advice to question authority and rely on oneself.

Most of the year, like many holy teachers of his time, the Buddha walked from village to village teaching answering questions and talking with also to people. One day, together with some of his followers, the Buddha arrived at the town KESAPUTTA, home of the KALAMA people. The news spread Buddha's arrival. "The Buddha is here!" and The enlighten one is here. They have heard about the teacher, a man famous for his great wisdom. Everyone wanted to see him. Respectfully they sat down around him. They had a burning question.
Sir, we often have visits of holly teachers. Each one tells us how to live our lives. Each one tells us that they are right and the other teachers are wrong. Some say if you want to be happy, it is important to burn the right kind of incense every evening.
Another holly teachers come along with their ideas and say they are right and the other teachers are stupid. We dont know who to believe. How can we tell which one is speaking the truth?
I am not surprised about you are confused because this is indeed a difficult question. It is important not to believe what someone tells you, just because lots of other people think like that. Or because it is traditional, or because there are rumours about it. Dont believe someone because they seem to know the scriptures very well, or because they have strong opinions. Also dont believe what someone says where there is no evidence. or without much discussion, or just because it sounds familiar. You cant even just believe someone who seems knowledgeable and well educated, even if you feel respect for them as your teacher. The only way to know whether some is speaking the truth is to test their advice in your own experience. Then if you feel really sure that the teaching is likely to cause harm or unhappiness you should reject it. If following a teacher's advice make you feel greedy or angry or full of hatred, or confusion, is that helpful? No. Certainly not.
Ask yourself how things might turn out if you follow a particular piece of advice? For example, if you take things which arnt yours, are you likely to cause harm to yourself or others? If you speak untruthfully, or cloud your mind with drinks or drugs are you likely to harm to yourself or others?
You can also think of someone more experienced than you whose opinion you already respect . What would they think of this teaching? If you really think following a particular piece of advice would help you and others become happy, then go ahead. Follow that advice. If you found that following a particular adivice helped you to avoid greed, hatred and confusion such a teaching would be helpful. Wouldn't it? - Yes, it certainly would.
A person who is free from greed, hatred and confusion, will feel much better.
If your mind is free and peaceful, and your heart is full of love and compassion for the whole world, you will experience great comfort and happiness.
I have asked you to look into own experience to decide whether something worth following or not.
But when it comes to what happen after death, its not possible to do this, is it?
There are so many views and opinions but how can we know in our own experience?
However, remember what I have told you today. Living ethically, with kindness and wisdom leads to happiness and well being. This is true for this life. And if there are future lives, it would be true for those too.
So regardless of what you believe, the important thing is that you are trying to live with a clear mind and a kind heart and you can see the consequences of your actions for yourselves and others around you.

On my first full day in Delhi I stumbled upon an authentic and cheap eatery called Vrindavani. They just happened to serve up my favorite dish, vegetarian thali. Delhi is notorious for being the food capital of India, and if there is one thing Delhilites are obsessed with, it's their thali. What is a thali? A thali is a large circular plate filled with small tins placed around the rim. Each small tiffin is filled with a different dish. It's a great way to try out different dishes even if you don't know how to order them because the thali is a fixed set. You don't get to choose what you get, it is simply whatever they have cooking in the kitchen that day.
The reason I stopped inside this restaurant was because I was very interested in the stack of clay cups that were piled in the front entrance on a counter. I ended up ordering one of those drinks which turned out was called a “Tulsi.” It appeared to be a regular lassi which is a regional drink made of yogurt in Delhi which is used to cool down the palette when eating spicy foods – it's also just really delicious. The flavors were of rose water and possibly saffron, definitely a hint of exotic Indian spices.
This restaurant is located in the middle of the chaos, right in the center of Chandni Chowk market which is a favorite shopping spot for locals in Delhi. This area is a mixture of a bustling and loud bazar as well as a foodie paradise. There are many food vendors that set up little booths and bicycle arenas serving up everything from chai to hot stuffed parathas (a type of Punjabi style tortilla). This particular restaurant specializes in making delicious vegetarian food which really hits the spot.
When I was served my thali, I received a huge whole wheat naan that was crispy, fluffy, fresh and made in-house. These naan breads are made by placing inside a tandoor oven which bakes it perfectly inside and out.
On my circular plate, there were three veggie dishes, biryani rice, radishes, and chili paste. I was very excited to dig in as it was my first meal in Delhi. It did not disappoint...it was insanely tasty, each dish was bursting with flavor, and felt really light yet filling. The three dishes included one with cottage cheese swimming in a fragrant curry gravy, another was a lentil soup which was perfectly spiced, and the third was a curry made with big legumes swimming in chili sauce which tasted similar to American baked beans.
All in all, I would highly recommend eating at this restaurant if you are in Old Delhi. It's a great place to sit down for a quick meal while taking in the scenery. The best part about this restaurant is that it is very affordable, while still producing top notch Delhi cuisine.
