Skip list

In computer science, a skip list is a data structure that allows fast search within an ordered sequence of elements. Fast search is made possible by maintaining a linked hierarchy of subsequences, each skipping over fewer elements. Searching starts in the sparsest subsequence until two consecutive elements have been found, one smaller and one larger than or equal to the element searched for. Via the linked hierarchy, these two elements link to elements of the next sparsest subsequence, where searching is continued until finally we are searching in the full sequence. The elements that are skipped over may be chosen probabilistically or deterministically, with the former being more common.

Description

A skip list is built in layers. The bottom layer is an ordinary ordered linked list. Each higher layer acts as an "express lane" for the lists below, where an element in layer i appears in layer i+1 with some fixed probability p (two commonly used values for p are 1/2 or 1/4). On average, each element appears in 1/(1-p) lists, and the tallest element (usually a special head element at the front of the skip list) in lists.

Search (band)

Search is a rock band formed in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. It was founded in 1981 by Yazit (drums), Hillary Ang (guitar), Nasir (bass guitar), Zainal (guitar) and Amy (vocals). The group went through many line-up changes in its career, but the songs and music remained strong and unique among Malaysian and Singaporean fans. To date, they have released eleven studio albums, a number of live, compilation and joint (with Wings) albums. They have been regarded by Malaysian rock fans as the greatest rock band in Malaysia with their numerous hits along with rock anthems.

Search and seizure

Search and seizure is a procedure used in many civil law and common law legal systems whereby police or other authorities and their agents, who suspect that a crime has been committed, do a search of a person's property and confiscate any relevant evidence to the crime.

Some countries have provisions in their constitutions that provide the public with the right to be free from "unreasonable" search and seizure. This right is generally based on the premise that everyone is entitled to a reasonable right to privacy.

Though interpretation may vary, this right sometimes requires law enforcement to obtain a search warrant before engaging in any form of search and seizure. In cases where evidence is seized in a search, that evidence might be rejected by court procedures, such as with a motion to suppress the evidence under the exclusionary rule.

In Italy protection from search and seizure is enshrined in Article 14 of the Constitution, which states:

"The home is inviolable. Home inspections, searches, or seizures shall not be admissible save in the cases and manners complying with measures to safeguard personal liberty. Controls and inspections for reason of public health and safety, or for economic and fiscal purposes, shall be regulated by appropriate laws."

Skip (singer)

Skip (stylized as $kip) is a singer-songwriter and teen pop artist.

In 2012, he released his debut single "Skippin'", which was subsequently certified gold by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry.

After a week of releasing his debut single, his single directly charted in the Philippines where it peaked in the top 8 for 2 straight weeks. The single was then a certified Gold.

He announced that his debut album was to be released in December 2012.

In February 2012, he performed his second single titled "Clap! Clap! Clap!" which was taken from his debut album. The song directly debuted on the Philippine Charts and there it peaked on number 10.

He confirmed his 3rd single, but wasn't given an official release date. The song was dedicate to his own idol, Whitney Houston. The single was named "Break Free Above", which talks more about the death of the legendary singer.

Skip (audio playback)

A skip occurs when a phonograph (gramophone), cassette tape or Compact Disc player malfunctions or is disturbed so as to play incorrectly, causing a break in sound or a jump to another part of the recording.

Vinyl gramophone records

Vinyl records are easily scratched and vinyl readily acquires a static charge, attracting dust that is difficult to remove completely. Dust and scratches cause audio clicks and pops and, in extreme cases, they can cause the needle (stylus) to skip over a series of grooves, or worse yet, cause the needle to skip backwards, creating an unintentional locked groove that repeats the same 1.8 seconds (at 33⅓ RPM) or 1.3 seconds (at 45 RPM) of track over and over again. Locked grooves are not uncommon and are even heard occasionally in broadcasts. The locked groove gave rise to the expression "broken record" referring to someone who continually repeats the same statement with little if any variation.

Compact Discs

A "skip" or "jump" is when the laser of a Compact Disc player cannot read the faulty groove or block of data. Skips are usually caused by marks blocking the path of the beam to the disc, e.g. a finger mark, hair, dirt in general, or a scratch. Since the read mechanism has very little contact with the disc's surface and the data itself is not on the outer layer of the disc, the blockage is not a physical issue as with a record, but rather reflective.

Skip (container)

A skip (UK English) or dumpster (US and Canadian English) is a large open-topped waste container designed for loading onto a special type of lorry. Instead of being emptied into a garbage truck on site, as a wheelie bin is, a skip is removed, or replaced by an empty skip, and then tipped at a landfill site or transfer station.

Typically skip bins have a distinctive shape: the longitudinal cross-section of the skip bin is either a trapezoid or two stacked trapezoids. The lower trapezoid has the smaller edge at the bottom of the skip bin, and a longer edge at the top. Where there is an upper trapezoid, it has the smaller edge at the top. At either end of the skip bin there is a sloping floor or wall. There are usually two lugs at the ends of the bin onto which chains can be attached, permitting the heavy skip bin to be lifted onto and off a lorry. A special skip-carrying lorry or crane is used.

One end of the skip sometimes has a large door that hinges down to allow manual loading and unloading. Skips are usually durable and tough, made to withstand rough use by tradesmen and labourers. The size of skip bins can vary greatly depending on their use, with sizes ranging from small 2 yard mini skips to the very large 40 yard roll-on roll-off skips. Even though these large bins can store many tonnes of waste, most lorries are limited to carrying around 8 tonnes (8,000 kg) of material in the container.

Leave!

"Leave!" is a song by English recording artist V V Brown from her debut studio album Travelling Like the Light. It was released on March 2, 2009 as the album's second single and was accompanied by a music video. This single, like her debut single "Crying Blood" failed to reach the charts.

Critical reception

Digitalspy gave the song 4 out of 5 stars; they said this about the song "The song itself, which mixes girl group pop with Ronson-esque beats and a hint of new wave, is just as direct as her message, but a whole lot easier to swallow. Thank heavens she chose to sweeten the pill!". The review was mostly positive. It was also the first song by VV Brown to be reviewed on digitalspy because for some reason "Crying Blood" wasn't put onto their data base when it was released.

Femalefirst.co.uk also gave the song 4 out of 5 stars. They started the review by comparing her to other successful voices saying "VV Brown is the newest singer to try and make some cash out of a panda that sounds like Amy Winehouse / Duffy / Adele and all credit to her, she does it well. Fair enough, it might not be the most original sound of all time". They ended the review positively by saying "Her funky doo-wap-de-doo-wap sound brings something back to the music industry that seemed to have disappeared many years ago as the like of bubble gum pop came onto the scene. Her no-frills attitude, mixed with the perfect blend of 50’s pop and (at the very end) almost MC-ing sound make VV Brown one to watch in 2009".
