What is Sansamed?
We at Sansamed know that medicine can be difficult at times, understanding basic medical concepts and processes can be very frustrating which brings us to our main goal which will be to produce videos that hopefully would make medicine simpler and more fun to understand.
What is an autoimmune disease?
It is a condition where one loses his/her own self-tolerance (ability of an immune system to not attack own tissues). Autoimmunity is usually seen in females in their reproductive year, and this is related to female ability to get pregnant. This is by production of certain hormones that downregulates the immune system in order to protect the fetus from mothers immune system. Our own immune cells and proteins are the causative factors. Examples of autoimmune diseases include:
SLE (systemic lupus eruthromatosis), RA (rheumatoid arthritis), Scleroderma,
Multiple sclerosis,
AIHA, Myasthania gravis, Goodpasteurs disease etc.
What is SLE?
Systemic lupus erythromatosis (SLE) is an autoimmune disease. SLE is mainly seen in females in their reproductive years. Like any other autoimmune disease there is a target antigen, in SLE the target antigen is nuclear structures and the antibodies are called
ANA (antinuclear antibodies, specifically anti-dsDNA, anti-histone and more). SLE is involved in bothe type 2 and type 3 hypersensitivity. Clinically, in SLE patients, we see flares (period of illness) and remissions (recovery).
