Raymond Lovell

Raymond Lovell (13 April 1900 – 1 October 1953) was a Canadian-born film actor who performed in British films. He mainly played supporting roles, often somewhat pompous characters.

Lovell married Margot Ruddock, an actress, singer and poet, with whom he had a daughter, Simone Lovell. This relationship broke down when Ruddock began an affair with W. B. Yeats in 1934, the year her daughter was born. In 1947 he married Tamara Desni, which ended in a divorce in 1951.

Lovell initially trained as a Doctor at Cambridge University, but gave up medicine for the stage in the 1920s.

Robert Newton

Robert Newton (1 June 1905 – 25 March 1956) was an English stage and film actor. Along with Errol Flynn, Newton was one of the most popular actors among the male juvenile audience of the 1940s and early 1950s, especially with British boys. Known for his hard drinking lifestyle, he was cited as a role model by the actor Oliver Reed and The Who drummer Keith Moon.

Newton is best remembered for his portrayal of the feverish-eyed Long John Silver in the 1950 film adaptation of Treasure Island, the film that became the standard for screen portrayals of historical pirates. He would continue to portray Blackbeard in 1952 and Long John Silver again in the 1954 film of the same name, which spawned a miniseries in the mid 50s. Hailing from the West Country in south west England, his exaggeration of his West Country accent is credited with popularising the stereotypical "pirate voice". Newton has become the "patron saint" of the annual International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Career

Robert Guy Newton was born in Shaftesbury, Dorset, a son of the landscape painter Algernon Newton, R.A. He was educated in Lamorna near Penzance, Cornwall, then at Exeter School and St Bartholomew's School in Newbury, Berkshire. His acting career began at the age of 16 at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1921 and he followed this by performing in many plays in the West End of London, including Bitter Sweet by Noël Coward. He also appeared in Private Lives on Broadway, taking over the role from his friend Laurence Olivier. From 1932 to 1934, he was the manager of the Shilling Theatre in Fulham, London. In 1939, he played Horatio to Laurence Olivier's Hamlet at the Old Vic, in a production that also included Alec Guinness and Michael Redgrave. During the war he starred in the West End in No Orchids for Miss Blandish. His final performance on stage was in the 1950 production of Gaslight with Rosamund John at the Vaudeville Theatre.

Lost and found

A lost and found (American English and Canadian English), lost property (British English), or lost articles (also Canadian English) is an office in a public building or area where people can go to retrieve lost articles that may have been found by others. Frequently found at museums, amusement parks and schools, a lost and found will typically be a clearly marked box or room in a location near the main entrance. This is in contrast to Old Dominion University's centralization of lost and found management through the use of technology to better manage the return-to-owner process.

Some lost and found offices will try to contact the owners of any lost items if there are any personal identifiers available. Practically all will either sell, give or throw away items after a certain period has passed to clear their storage.

History

First advertising of this kind appears on papyruses in Ancient Greece and Rome. In Japan, the lost-and-found property system dates to a code written in the year 718. The first modern lost and found office was organized in Paris in 1805. Napoleon ordered his prefect of police to establish it as a central place "to collect all objects found in the streets of Paris", according to Jean-Michel Ingrandt, who was appointed the office's director in 2001. However, it was not until 1893 that Louis Lépine, then prefect of police, organized efforts to actively track down the owners of lost items.

Bernard Lovell

Sir Alfred Charles Bernard Lovell, OBE, FRS (31 August 1913 – 6 August 2012) was an English physicist and radio astronomer. He was the first Director of Jodrell Bank Observatory, from 1945 to 1980.

Early life and education

Lovell was born at Oldland Common, Bristol in 1913, the son of Gilbert and Emily Laura Lovell. His childhood hobbies and interests included cricket and music – mainly the piano. He had a Methodist upbringing and attended Kingswood Grammar School.

Career

Lovell studied physics at the University of Bristol obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in 1934, and a PhD in 1936 on the electrical conductivity of thin films. At this time he also received lessons from Raymond Jones, a teacher at Bath Technical School and later organist at Bath Abbey. The church organ was one of the main loves of his life, apart from science. He worked in the cosmic ray research team at the University of Manchester until the outbreak of the Second World War, during which he worked for the Telecommunications Research Establishment (TRE) developing radar systems to be installed in aircraft, among them H2S. In June 1942 he was involved in the recovery of a highly secret cavity magnetron from the wreckage of a Handley Page Halifax that had crashed killing a number of his colleagues, including EMI engineer Alan Blumlein, while on a test flight. For his work on H2S Lovell received an OBE in 1946.

Bernard Lovell (1913-2012), British radio astronomer and founder of the Jodrell Bank Observatory, received an OBE in 1946 for his work on radar, and was knighted in 1961. His steerable radio telescope tracked Sputnik and is now named the Lovell telescope. [Listeners: Alastair Gunn and Megan Argo] TRANSCRIPT: The other thing about my life, I could have been, I could have been a cricketer but I’m jolly glad I wasn’t, in view of what happened. I was quite good and played for the university and then the war came and there was no cricket then and the other thing was music. Now music, I was as a young boy taught to play the piano, but then I became, became passionate about organs and still am, and I was- I had two uncles who were organists and at a very young age I used to deputise in the church for one of my uncles and then when I grew up and when I was at university stage I became the pupil of an organist in Bath, Raymond Jones and he, he became, his church was destroyed during the war in which he taught me, and he became the organist at Bath Abbey and I’ve had this close connection with Bath Abbey, and he, he lived for a long time and he was emeritus organists for Bath Abbey, and his- until last year I’d made, when I was- at Christmas time I would always going to the organ loft in Bath Abbey with his successor. Now, I have this strange passion for organs and I still have, and I will go anywhere to hear a good organ recital. When we moved to Swettenham, I was fortunate enough to become the organist to the local church, and in 19- the organ in the church, it’s a very small church and he had a list of rectors dating from the 13th Century but it’s a very beautiful church, and when I became the organist there it was a very poor organ, and then I became acquainted through friends, with Noel Mander, the firm of great organ builders in London and it was Noel Mander who frequently came here and stayed with us and we arranged for him to rebuild the organ in the church here, and so now since 1964 we have a Mander organ in this small church. Now I was the organist in the church for forty years and it was a riveting part of my life. It ordered some, gave some order to it, the practising and the playing every Sunday and then about ten years ago my sight became so poor that I had to give up, so I’m no longer the organist but I miss it very much. I still amuse myself on the piano here, but I’m still passionate about organ music and about organs in general. That has been, I often wish, oddly, that I had really devoted my whole attention to music and become more of a professional musician than I could ever claim to be, but it’s been a great release for someone in one of the awful times that I have to talk about at the Jodrell, one of my colleagues said to me- Well I should think you could deal with a good gin and tonic when you get home tonight? And I said, No, I shall sit down at the piano and play a little Bach. It had that sort of effect on me and now in my very late old age of 93 I can’t really see to read alas unless I have artificial means, but I’m passionate about it. I listen to music and I go to a lot of concerts and I’m mixed up intimately with many concert societies in the vicinity, Chester Music Festival and many others, and so on, so that has added a dimension to my life which has really stopped me from devoting my whole time to science.

[Listeners: Alastair Gunn and Megan Argo] TRANSCRIPT:Now I want to return to the position about the debt on the telescope, and I’m talking about the period 1958/1959 in this horrendous period when we had this debt of £260,000, and this was the sum, which was finally agreed between the university and the DSIR, that we had to find £260,000 somehow to pay off the debt of the telescope, and it was also agreed that the DSIR would contribute half of this provided the university would guarantee to raise, somehow or other, the, the other half of £130,000 and I remind you that we’re now talking about, on today’s values, we’re talking about a million or so. In 1958 and ’59, as soon as this problem with the public accounts committee was resolved, the university felt free to proceed to launch a public appeal to raise this £136,000. Sir Raymond Street, the treasurer, he made a very, very famous speech to the court of the university, and then issued this speech as a public appeal. The response was poor. The reason the response was poor is that the industrialists who might have helped, said look here, this is not the university’s responsibility. The government should pay off and we were always in the newspapers’ headlines. Questions were asked of the prime minister in the house. He was going to the Soviet Union. How dare he go to the Soviet Union when, when this instrument was, was, was in debt and so on. Lord Hailsham was then the Minister for Science and he came to see me one day and he was an angry man. He said- oh, so, so you’re the fellow who’s making my life a misery. He said- every morning my desk is piled with letters from people I don’t know, saying we ought to pay off your debt, so I said- my lord that agitation is not coming from me. I said we recognise that the government has done its share. It has borne half the cost of the debt. We are trying to raise the remainder. He cooled down a bit after that and enjoyed being taken on to the telescope. Nevertheless, we had several meetings and I found these a very tiresome diversion. Furthermore, everybody was contributing. I was getting letters from schoolboys and schoolgirls sending me their pocket money. It was really extrodinarily of touching that we had these children trying to pay off this enormous debt and sacrificing their, their chocolate money and their sweet money, and friends and kind unknown individuals, sending in cheques £50-£100. Well, we, we did in the end, manage to raise about 80,000 and then everything became stuck. You know, nothing further happened. I want to tell you what, how, how, how the glorious end to that episode.

In the Iconic Houses lecture series Raymond Neutra, the son of modernist architect Richard Neutra (1892-1970) gave a talk on 14 April 2013. The lecture took at the Van Schijndel House in Utrecht, the Netherlands. A film about the VDL Research House accompanied the lecture. The career evolution of influential modernist architect Richard Neutra, who was active in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles, can be best seen in the various modifications and reconstructions of his VDL Research House (sometimes known as the Van der Leeuw House) over the course of four decades. The home was built in 1932, with the support of Dutch businessman Cees van der Leeuw: the 'VDL ' of its name is a tribute to him. As the director of the Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam, Van der Leeuw often travelled to America and was much impressed by the houses that Neutra built for his clients. Neutra and his family, however, lived with his Austrian colleague, Rudolph Schindler. Van der Leeuw thought that the promising young Neutra deserved the chance to design his own house, and provided the money (as an interest-free loan) for him to do it. The original compact design of the house in 1932 exemplified Neutra's seminal early work before the 1939 addition of the backyard garden house embodied the new necessity of indoor/outdoor living for the growing family. Then, when the original house was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in the 1960s by Richard and his son Dion, who is also an architect, it became the quintessence of environmental, climate-sensitive design. Hundreds of projects were designed there, launching the careers of many renowned architects. The site became a cultural and political salon, attracting some of the world's most prominent thinkers. Yet today the house is in danger of significant decay.   Raymond Neutra Over the last 35 years, Neutra's youngest son Raymond has travelled the world to connect with his father's buildings, their owners and their occupants. He offers a unique perspective on his father's work, and is also devoted to the preservation of modernist works all over the world. Raymond Neutra is the secretary of the Friends of the Neutra VDL Research Site. Following his retirement from a career in public health, he is actively engaged in the preservation of his former home, which his mother bequeathed to California's Poly Pomona College of Environmental Design in 1990. His lectures raise awareness and funds for the restoration of the VDL Studio/Residences. The Utrecht lecture will describe the ongoing efforts to restore the VDL compound, including the philosophical issues encountered during the project.
