Dr. Kimbro’s graduate student, Tanya Rogers, investigates the loss of predator diversity at Bay Mouth Bar. Over the last few decades, Bay Mouth Bar lost one of its main predators, the true tulip snail. It also lost a smaller snail species, the murex, and the amount of area covered by seagrass has declined. Tanya runs an experiment to see whether the loss of predator diversity has had an effect that has trickled down and caused the decline of the seagrass bed habitat.

The horse conch is the largest predatory snail in Florida Waters. They're practically ecosystems onto themselves, often covered in barnacles, crepidula snails, bryozoans, and other small marine animals that affix themselves to hard surfaces (including the occasional oyster). They have these massive bright orange bodies inside their shells.
In this video, you'll see horse conchs roaming seagrass beds in the Florida Gulf, specifically St. Joseph Bay and Bay Mouth Bar. This is an excerpt from the new "In the Grass, On the Reef" documentary, "Testing the Ecology of Fear." The program follows Dr. David Kimbro and Dr. Randall Hughes as they study predator/ prey interactions in salt marshes, oyster reefs, and on the seagrass beds and sand flats of Bay Mouth Bar.
Bay Mouth Bar contains the largest diversity of predatory snails in the world, and an overwhelming variety of clams, crabs, worms, sand dollars, sea stars and others. But the horse conch is the lion of this habitat. As the largest predator, the horse conch affects the ecosystem by eating other predatory snails, who in turn eat clams. The clams eat phytoplankton in the water, filtering it clean, so by controlling clam predators, the horse conch benefits the clams and the water. But are its effects over other snails like banded tulips and lightning whelks purely consumptive, or might fear control them as well? The fear of being eaten might change the behavior of these intermediate predators, affecting more individuals that a horse conch can eat. Through their research, Dr. Hughes and Dr. Kimbro hope to find out how predators might scare smaller animals in economically and and ecologically ecosystems.

The Spit was formed between 1897 and 1898, a product of longshore drift when high seas broke through a small area of land called Jumpinpin on Stradbroke Island. This made a new ocean passage and divided Stradbroke Island in two (North & South). The continuous longshore drift continued to eroded South Stradbroke Island. Navigational difficulties lead to boating accidents, prompting the planning and design of the Gold Coast Seaway.
Design of the Gold Coast Seaway relied on data from the Beach Protection Authority.to prevent it becoming a baymouth bar connecting to South Stradbroke Island. Construction of the project had six main phases: Retaining walls using approximately one million tonnes of imported rock, Dredging 4.5 million cubic metres sand,closure of the old entrance, sand bypassing system, revegetation and sewage outfall. As The Spit then drew demand for private leasehold title of land, along with applications for dredging rights of mineral sands

The Spit was formed between 1897 and 1898, a product of longshore drift when high seas broke through a small area of land called Jumpinpin on Stradbroke Island. This made a new ocean passage and divided Stradbroke Island in two (North & South). The continuous longshore drift continued to eroded South Stradbroke Island. Navigational difficulties lead to boating accidents, prompting the planning and design of the Gold Coast Seaway.

Community growth of the spit

There was a township called Moondarewa located on the southern tip of South Stradbroke Island. This township was lost into the sea in the late 1930s during storms as the Broadwater Entrance migrated northwards. The township of Moondarewa was located in the area near where Seaworld is located today.
During the 1940s the Southport Yacht Club grew and added marina facilities for an the increasing number of private boats wanting to moor on the Spits' eastern side of the Broadwater. Since the 1950s and '60s, the local prawning industry used the The Spit for their berth.
The Spit continued to develop, with tourist attractions opening in the 1960s. It is now home to Sea World theme park, an upmarket shopping restaurant and bar precinct and several resorts.
Seaworld Drive is the main street connecting the area of The Spit to the neighbourhood of Main Beach. Parklands and naturally vegetated sand dunes on the eastern Ocean side of the Spit start in Main Beach at Kemp St and Main Beach Parade and run continuously to the tip of the Spit. Some popular parks are within this nature strip. In the southern end toward Main Beach neighbourhood is Hollingdale Park with picnic facilities. Further north past Seaworld Resort, is Phillip Park popular for wedding photographs.
At the northern end is Doug Jennings Park. A large area with parking and Public facilities. It covers the whole north end of The Spit, with views to Wave Break Island to the east and South Stradbroke Island to the north. It is a popular family park and with rod fishing a familiar sight. The park has been a popular outdoor concert and event venue. It is now part of annual music events like Summadayze.

On the north shore of Lake Ontario just 45 minutes from my home is the largest fresh water bay-mouth sand bar in the world. This 7 kilometer long natural wonder is the centerpiece of Sandbanks Provincial Park, Canada. One of the busiest Provincial Parks in the Ontario Park System, these dunes now attract more than 500,000 visitors every year.
This is a story about changes. Changing attitudes and changing environments. This is my story but it could be your story. Have you been keeping an eye on the wild spaces in your back yard?
With this video we want to stimulate community interest and understanding of Sandbanks Provincial Park. We want to do our part to help ensure the protection of its natural and cultural resources for future generations.

The very first outing with my new kayak, a Current Designs Solstice GT Titan, took me to the mouth of Tomales Bay. A crazy sand bar, which almost closes the entrance, causes random surf and pretty chaotic, unpredictable conditions there. Not yet being able to roll, I had never dared getting close to it. Since the Titan comes with so much primary and secondary stability, I took the plunge last weekend. Promptly was tipped over by a wave, and -- believe it or not -- managed the first successful high brace. And the next wave tipped me right over one more time. And again, I did not go under.
I love this boat already, after the very first afternoon! Perfect fit for the larger person like me. If you are in the Bay Area, check out California Canoe & Kayak in Oakland. They had a demo boat that took all of an hour to convince me. Great, personable service, too!
For the record: The yell I emitted after the first capsize is a traditional Bavarian expression of joy, along the lines of: "I did it!".
For the record 2: The ball mount for the camera had cracked that same day. So the camera was sitting too loose and thus was knocked over by the same waves that tipped me. That makes it a bit difficult to keep track of the attitude of the boat with respect to the camera.

A baymouth bar is a depositional feature as a result of longshore drift. It is a spit that completely closes access to a bay, thus sealing it off from the main body of water. These bars usually consist of accumulated gravel and sand carried by the current of longshore drift and deposited at a less turbulent part of the current. Thus, they most commonly occur across artificial bay and river entrances due to the loss of kinetic energy in the current after wave refraction.
In most cases, a Sand Bypass System is built to prevent these bars forming across the entrance of man-made seaways, eliminating the danger posed to commercial and recreational boat owners passing through.
The worlds first permanent Sand Bypass System was built on the Gold Coast in Australia.

Tipped over in Tomales Bay Entrance
The very first outing with my new kayak, a Current Designs Solstice GT Titan, took me to the mouth of Tomales Bay. A crazy sand bar, which almost closes the entrance, causes random surf and pretty chaotic, unpredictable conditions there. Not yet being able to roll, I had never dared getting close to it. Since the Titan comes with so much primary and secondary stability, I took the plunge last weekend. Promptly was tipped over by a wave, and -- believe it or not -- managed the first successful high brace. And the next wave tipped me right over one more time. And again, I did not go under. The program follows Dr. David Kimbro and Dr. Randall Hughes as they study predator/ prey interactions in salt marshes, oyster reefs, and on the seagrass beds and sand flats of Bay Mouth Bar.
Bay Mouth Bar contains the largest diversity of predatory snails in the world, and an overwhelming variety of clams, crabs, worms, sand dollars, sea stars and others. But the horse conch is the lion of this habitat. As the largest predator, the horse conch affects the ecosystem by eating other predatory snails, who in turn eat clams. The clams eat phytoplankton in the water, filtering it clean, so by controlling clam predators, the horse conch benefits the clams and the water. But are its effects over other snails like banded tulips and lightning whelks purely consumptive, or might fear control them as well? The fear of being eaten might change the behavior of these intermediate predators, affecting more individuals that a horse conch can eat. Through their research, Dr. Hughes and Dr. Kimbro hope to find out how predators might scare smaller animals in economically and and ecologically ecosystems.

Community growth of the spit

There was a township called Moondarewa located on the southern tip of South Stradbroke Island. This township was lost into the sea in the late 1930s during storms as the Broadwater Entrance migrated northwards. The township of Moondarewa was located in the area near where Seaworld is located today.
During the 1940s the Southport Yacht Club grew and added marina facilities for an the increasing number of private boats wanting to moor on the Spits' eastern side of the Broadwater. Since the 1950s and '60s, the local prawning industry used the The Spit for their berth.
The Spit continued to develop, with tourist attractions opening in the 1960s. It is now home to Sea World theme park, an upmarket shopping restaurant and bar precinct and several resorts.
Seaworld Drive is the main street connecting the area of The Spit to the neighbourhood of Main Beach. Parklands and naturally vegetated sand dunes on the eastern Ocean side of the Spit start in Main Beach at Kemp St and Main Beach Parade and run continuously to the tip of the Spit. Some popular parks are within this nature strip. In the southern end toward Main Beach neighbourhood is Hollingdale Park with picnic facilities. Further north past Seaworld Resort, is Phillip Park popular for wedding photographs.
At the northern end is Doug Jennings Park. A large area with parking and Public facilities. It covers the whole north end of The Spit, with views to Wave Break Island to the east and South Stradbroke Island to the north. It is a popular family park and with rod fishing a familiar sight. The park has been a popular outdoor concert and event venue. It is now part of annual music events like Summadayze.

The very first outing with my new kayak, a Current Designs Solstice GT Titan, took me to the mouth of Tomales Bay. A crazy sand bar, which almost closes the entrance, causes random surf and pretty chaotic, unpredictable conditions there. Not yet being able to roll, I had never dared getting close to it. Since the Titan comes with so much primary and secondary stability, I took the plunge last weekend. Promptly was tipped over by a wave, and -- believe it or not -- managed the first successful high brace. And the next wave tipped me right over one more time. And again, I did not go under.
I love this boat already, after the very first afternoon! Perfect fit for the larger person like me. If you are in the Bay Area, check out California Canoe & Kayak in Oakland. They had a demo boat that took all of an hour to convince me. Great, personable service, too!
For the record: The yell I emitted after the first capsize is a traditional Bavarian expression of joy, along the lines of: "I did it!".
For the record 2: The ball mount for the camera had cracked that same day. So the camera was sitting too loose and thus was knocked over by the same waves that tipped me. That makes it a bit difficult to keep track of the attitude of the boat with respect to the camera.

We were given a brand new Indian Chieftain and a brand new Victory Magnum from Cycle Works Motorsports of Alberta and we decided to ride them across Canada, coast to coast on The Worlds Longest Demo Ride.
We brought friends along with us and we're going to ride parts of the country we've never seen before and detail our experience with these two new bikes.
When we're done crossing Canada, we're heading to the Sturgis Motorcycle rally #75 in South Dakota.

Leaving Marathon Ontario, making our way to Sault Set. Marie Ontario for the night, we had great weather and were welcomed to stay in a cabin right on the North Channel, WOW it was beautiful!
We rode Hwy 6 to catch the South Baymouth Ferry, which for future information, they only supply 3/4" "older" rope to tie your bikes down with. It was a windy day on Lake Huron, the boat swayed pretty good, Troy got one of the workers to take him down to the bikes to m make sure they were still upright... they were!
Our friend Cathy & Cory met us on the other side of the Ferry and toured us around Southern Ontario, man is it beautiful!! Roads are great! We stopped in at Wiarton Willy, the famous Groundhog, and made our way to their home, where we would spend a couple days R&R;'ing!
Ang's cousin gets married in Burlington Ontario, we spend a couple days there with family.
Highlight of the Demo Ride is stopping in at Dealers across Canada, we rode in the rain to get to Peaks Powersports where Nathan and his staff were very hospitable. It was super great for riders who have been following us to come out and meet us, sign the map and share riding stories.

We rode along Niagara on the lake, then onto the Niagara Parkway and eventually stopped at Niagara Falls! WOW that is spectacular!
We crossed into New York State right at Niagara, and took the backroads for a few days, then hooked up with some Toll Booth Interstate Highways to make our way to Pine Bush NY where we get to meet Lloyd from Lloyd'z Motor Workz!!
