Scotland Yard (officially New Scotland Yard) is a metonym for the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service, the territorial police force responsible for policing most of London.
The name derives from the location of the original Metropolitan Police headquarters at 4 Whitehall Place, which had a rear entrance on a street called Great Scotland Yard. The Scotland Yard entrance became the public entrance to the police station, and over time the street and the Metropolitan Police became synonymous. The New York Times wrote in 1964 that just as Wall Street gave its name to New York's financial district, Scotland Yard became the name for police activity in London.
The force moved away from Great Scotland Yard in 1890, and the name New Scotland Yard was adopted for subsequent headquarters. The current New Scotland Yard is located on Broadway (51°29′55″N 0°07′59″W / 51.49861°N 0.13305°W / 51.49861; -0.13305 (New Scotland Yard (current, third location))Coordinates: 51°29′55″N 0°07′59″W / 51.49861°N 0.13305°W / 51.49861; -0.13305 (New Scotland Yard (current, third location))) in Victoria and has been the Metropolitan Police's headquarters since 1967. In 2013, it was announced that the force will move back to the Curtis Green Building, the former site of Scotland Yard, which is located on the Victoria Embankment in 2015, and will be renamed Scotland Yard.
New Scotland may refer to:
Scotland (/ˈskɒt.lənd/; Scots: [ˈskɔt.lənd]; Scottish Gaelic: Alba [ˈal̪ˠapə]) is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and covers the northern third of the island of Great Britain. It shares a border with England to the south, and is otherwise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to the east and the North Channel and Irish Sea to the south-west. In addition to the mainland, the country is made up of more than 790 islands, including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.
Edinburgh, the country's capital and second-largest city, was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual, and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third-largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil capital.
The Metropolitan Police Service (abbreviated to MPS and widely known informally as "the Met") is the territorial police force responsible for law enforcement in Greater London, excluding the "square mile" of the City of London, which is the responsibility of the City of London Police. The Met also has significant national responsibilities, such as co-ordinating and leading on counter-terrorism matters and protection of the British Royal Family and senior figures of Her Majesty's Government.
As of October 2011, the Met employed 48,661 full-time personnel. This included 31,478 sworn police officers, 13,350 non-police staff, and 3,831 non-sworn police community support officers. This number excludes the 5,479 Special Constables, who work part-time (a minimum of 16 hours a month) and who have the same powers and uniform as their regular colleagues. This makes the Metropolitan Police the largest police force in the United Kingdom by a significant margin, and one of the biggest in the world.
The yard (abbreviation: yd) is an English unit of length, in both the British imperial and US customary systems of measurement, that comprises 3 feet or 36 inches. It is by international agreement in 1959 standardized as exactly 0.9144 meters. A metal yardstick originally formed the physical standard from which all other units of length were officially derived in both English systems.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, increasingly powerful microscopes and scientific measurement detected variation in these prototype yards which became significant as technology improved. In 1959, the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa agreed to adopt the Canadian compromise value of 0.9144 meters per yard.
The term yard is also sometimes used for translating related lengths in other systems.
The name derives from the Old English gerd, gyrd, &c., which was used for branches, staves, and measuring rods. It is first attested in the late-7th century laws of Ine of Wessex, where the "yard of land" mentioned is the yardland, an old English unit of tax assessment equal to 1⁄4 hide. Around the same time, the Lindisfarne Gospel's account of the messengers from John the Baptist in the Book of Matthew used it for a branch swayed by the wind. In addition to the yardland, Old and Middle English both used their forms of "yard" to denote the surveying lengths of 15 or 16 1⁄2 ft used in computing acres, a distance now usually known as the "rod".

LONDON Met POLICE plan to SELL new SCOTLAND YARD HEADQUARTERS to save money London, UK October 31, 2012 The Metropolitan Police has announced that it plans to sell off its New Scotland Yard headquarters to cut spending. The force faces making cuts of more than 500 million pounds ($800 mln) by 2015. It plans to save $10.5 mln per year by moving to a smaller base, as it is expensive to maintain the current building located in central London. The UK's biggest force aims to move to a new site within two years. As part of budget cutting, the department will close dozens of police stations and the number of workers will be reduced. The force has moved several times: from Whitehall Place to Great Scotland Yard in 1875, to the Norman Shaw building in 1890, and to New Scotland Yard in 1967. ...

Victoria Embank on the North bank of the Thames, the gates to Old Scotland Yard designed by Norman Shaw and keeping people out of what once was the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police and former home of the Black Museum, a grim archive of criminal memorabilia. Staff at the museum regularly reported seeing the ghost of a hooded woman wandering aimlessly around the building. One security guard watched in terror as the apparition moved towards him before disappearing into thin air.

Money dictates almost everything we do in life. But does it limit our freedom? Well, captain Camcam and I decided to find out by travelling around Scotland for 1 week with no money. Having no plan and taking only some camping gear and a bag of rice and oats, we relied on the kindness of strangers for transport and sufficient food. The former home of England’s famous Scotland Yard is up for sale, and you could own it for the cut price of $433 million dollars. The 22 storey, 600 000-square-foot building is one of the most recognizable in the UK, it’s revolving sign the backdrop to countless television police appeals.
