This documentary is a filmed biography of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938), an Ottoman-Turkish army officer who later became the first President of Turkey. The film shows his efforts to establish and modernize the Turkish Republic.
He is credited with being the founder of the Republic of Turkey. His surname, Atatürk (meaning "Father of the Turks"), was granted to him in 1934 by the Turkish parliament.
Historical background and Atatürk’s career:
Atatürk was born around 1881 in the city of Salonica (now Thessaloniki, Greece), which at that time was part of the Ottoman Empire. His family was middle-class, and Turkish-speaking. Though he claimed to be descended from Turkish nomads, he had blue eyes and fair hair, therefore some historians believe he was at least partly of Balkan ancestry.
During World War I (1914-1918), the Ottoman Empire allied itself with Germany and Austria-Hungary. By this time, the aging empire had lost almost all of its territory in Europe and Africa. Moreover, the so-called Young Turk Revolution of 1908 had stripped autocratic powers from the sultan and ushered in an era of parliamentary government. In 1915 Mustafa Kemal distinguished himself throughout the nearly yearlong Gallipoli Peninsula campaign, in which he helped stop a large force of British and French troops from taking Istanbul. He was soon promoted from colonel to brigadier-general.
Under the punitive peace treaty of Sèvres signed in August 1920, the Allied powers stripped all Arab provinces from the Ottoman Empire, provided for an independent Armenia, put the Greeks in charge of a region surrounding Smyrna (now Izmir) and asserted economic control over what little country remained. However, Mustafa Kemal had already organized an independence - national movement based in Ankara, the goal of which was to end foreign occupation of the Turkish-speaking areas and to stop them from being partitioned.
In 1921, with Mustafa Kemal at the head of the army, turkish troops forced the French and Italians to withdraw from the south. Then the Turks stopped the Greek advance near Sakarya, and sent them into a full-scale retreat all the way back to Smyrna on the Mediterranean Sea.
After these victories, Mustafa Kemal was ready to march against Istanbul, which was being occupied by the British and other Allied powers. Therefore, the British agreed to negotiate a new peace treaty and sent invitations to both the sultan’s government in Istanbul and Mustafa Kemal’s government in Ankara. But before the peace conference could begin, the Grand National Assembly in Ankara passed a resolution declaring that the sultan’s rule had already ended. The last Ottoman sultan fled his palace. A new peace treaty, the Treaty of Lausanne, was then signed in July 1923 that recognized an independent Turkish state. That October, the Grand National Assembly proclaimed the Republic of Turkey and elected Mustafa Kemal as its first president.
As a president, Atatürk launched a programme of revolutionary social and political reform to modernise Turkey (Turkish: Atatürk Devrimleri). These reforms included the emancipation of women, secularization and the introduction of Western legal codes, dress, calendar and alphabet, replacing the Arabic script with a Latin one. Under his leadership, thousands of new schools were built, primary education was made free and compulsory. The principles of Atatürk's reforms, upon which modern Turkey was established, are referred to as Kemalism Atatürkism (Turkish: Kemalizm, Atatürkçülük, Atatürkçü düşünce).
Abroad Atatürk pursued a policy of neutrality, establishing friendly relations with Turkey's neighbors.
On November 10, 1938, Atatürk, who never had any children, died in his bedroom at the Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul. He was replaced by İsmet İnönü, prime minister during most of Atatürk’s rule, who continued his policies of secularization and westernization.

Istiklâl Marsi (la Marcha de la Independencia) es el himno nacional de Turquía, adoptado oficialmente el 12 de marzo de 1921. Un total de 724 poemas fueron sometidos a una competición a escala nacional organizada para el hallazgo de la composición original más conveniente para esta marcha nacional.
Un poema de 10 versos escrito por el renombrado poeta Mehmet Akif Ersoy fue adoptado unánimemente por la Asamblea Nacional Magnífica Turca. Veinticuatro compositores participaron en otra competición dispuesta para la selección de una composición musical que satisfaría el himno nacional elegido lo mejor posible. El consejo, que podía solamente reunirse en 1924 debido a la guerra turca de la independencia, adoptó la música compuesta por Ali Rıfat Çağatay. Las palabras del himno nacional fueron cantadas a esta música hasta 1930. The İstiklâl marşı (English: Independence hymn) is the national anthem of Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, officially adopted on 12 March 1921 - two and a half years before the 29 October 1923 establishment of the Republic of Turkey, both as a motivational musical saga for the troops fighting in the Turkish War of Independence, and as an anthem for a Republic that was yet to be established.
Penned by Mehmet Âkif Ersoy, ultimately composed by Osman Zeki Üngör, the theme is one of affection for the Turkish homeland, freedom, and faith, of sacrifice for liberty, and of hope and devotion, explored through visual, tactile and kinesthetic imagery as they relate to the flag, the human spirit and the soil of the homeland.
The manuscript by Ersoy, between the title line İstiklal Marşı and the first text line, carries the dedication Kahraman Ordumuza -- "To our Heroic Army", the army that won the Independence War. The lyrics reflect on the sacrifice of the soldiers during the War.
The anthem was the subject of a brief copyright dispute in 2010, when GEMA, the German music copyright society, attempted to collect royalties on the anthem. The composition has also been adopted as the National Anthem of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Der Text stammt von dem Dichter Mehmet Akif Ersoy, die Musik von Osman Zeki Üngör. Text und Musik des İstiklâl Marşı wurden in einem Wettbewerb ausgewählt. The Black Sea is to the north, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Aegean Sea to the west. The Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara, and the Dardanelles (which together form the Turkish Straits) demarcate the boundary between Thrace and Anatolia; they also separate Europe and Asia. Turkey's location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia makes it a country of significant geostrategic importance.
Turkey has been inhabited since the paleolithic age, including various ancient Anatolian civilizations, Aeolian, Dorian and Ionian Greeks, Thracians, Armenians, and Assyrians. After Alexander the Great's conquest, the area was Hellenized, a process which continued under the Roman Empire and its transition into the Byzantine Empire. The Seljuk Turks began migrating into the area in the 11th century, starting the process of Turkification, which was greatly accelerated by the Seljuk victory over the Byzantines at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. The Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm ruled Anatolia until the Mongol invasion in 1243, upon which it disintegrated into several small Turkish beyliks.

Un total de 724 poemas fueron sometidos a una competición a escala nacional organizada para el hallazgo de la composición original más conveniente para esta marcha nacional. Un poema de 10 versos escrito por el renombrado poeta Mehmet Akif Ersoy fue adoptado unánimemente por la Asamblea Nacional Magnífica Turca. Historical background and Atatürk’s career:
Atatürk was born around 1881 in the city of Salonica (now Thessaloniki, Greece), which at that time was part of the Ottoman Empire. His family was middle-class, and Turkish-speaking. Though he claimed to be descended from Turkish nomads, he had blue eyes and fair hair, therefore some historians believe he was at least partly of Balkan ancestry.
During World War I (1914-1918), the Ottoman Empire allied itself with Germany and Austria-Hungary. By this time, the aging empire had lost almost all of its territory in Europe and Africa. Moreover, the so-called Young Turk Revolution of 1908 had stripped autocratic powers from the sultan and ushered in an era of parliamentary government. In 1915 Mustafa Kemal distinguished himself throughout the nearly yearlong Gallipoli Peninsula campaign, in which he helped stop a large force of British and French troops from taking Istanbul. He was soon promoted from colonel to brigadier-general.
Under the punitive peace treaty of Sèvres signed in August 1920, the Allied powers stripped all Arab provinces from the Ottoman Empire, provided for an independent Armenia, put the Greeks in charge of a region surrounding Smyrna (now Izmir) and asserted economic control over what little country remained. However, Mustafa Kemal had already organized an independence - national movement based in Ankara, the goal of which was to end foreign occupation of the Turkish-speaking areas and to stop them from being partitioned.
In 1921, with Mustafa Kemal at the head of the army, turkish troops forced the French and Italians to withdraw from the south. Then the Turks stopped the Greek advance near Sakarya, and sent them into a full-scale retreat all the way back to Smyrna on the Mediterranean Sea.
After these victories, Mustafa Kemal was ready to march against Istanbul, which was being occupied by the British and other Allied powers. Therefore, the British agreed to negotiate a new peace treaty and sent invitations to both the sultan’s government in Istanbul and Mustafa Kemal’s government in Ankara. But before the peace conference could begin, the Grand National Assembly in Ankara passed a resolution declaring that the sultan’s rule had already ended. The last Ottoman sultan fled his palace. A new peace treaty, the Treaty of Lausanne, was then signed in July 1923 that recognized an independent Turkish state. That October, the Grand National Assembly proclaimed the Republic of Turkey and elected Mustafa Kemal as its first president.
As a president, Atatürk launched a programme of revolutionary social and political reform to modernise Turkey (Turkish: Atatürk Devrimleri). These reforms included the emancipation of women, secularization and the introduction of Western legal codes, dress, calendar and alphabet, replacing the Arabic script with a Latin one. Under his leadership, thousands of new schools were built, primary education was made free and compulsory. The principles of Atatürk's reforms, upon which modern Turkey was established, are referred to as Kemalism Atatürkism (Turkish: Kemalizm, Atatürkçülük, Atatürkçü düşünce).
Abroad Atatürk pursued a policy of neutrality, establishing friendly relations with Turkey's neighbors.
On November 10, 1938, Atatürk, who never had any children, died in his bedroom at the Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul. He was replaced by İsmet İnönü, prime minister during most of Atatürk’s rule, who continued his policies of secularization and westernization.

The İstiklâl marşı (English: Independence hymn) is the national anthem of Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, officially adopted on 12 March 1921 - two and a half years before the 29 October 1923 establishment of the Republic of Turkey, both as a motivational musical saga for the troops fighting in the Turkish War of Independence, and as an anthem for a Republic that was yet to be established.
Penned by Mehmet Âkif Ersoy, ultimately composed by Osman Zeki Üngör, the theme is one of affection for the Turkish homeland, freedom, and faith, of sacrifice for liberty, and of hope and devotion, explored through visual, tactile and kinesthetic imagery as they relate to the flag, the human spirit and the soil of the homeland.
The manuscript by Ersoy, between the title line İstiklal Marşı and the first text line, carries the dedication Kahraman Ordumuza -- "To our Heroic Army", the army that won the Independence War. The lyrics reflect on the sacrifice of the soldiers during the War.
The anthem was the subject of a brief copyright dispute in 2010, when GEMA, the German music copyright society, attempted to collect royalties on the anthem. The composition has also been adopted as the National Anthem of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Vor der Vereinigung mit der Türkischen Republik im Jahr 1939 war der Marsch auch die Nationalhymne des Staates Hatay, der heutigen türkischen Provinz Hatay. El consejo, que podía solamente reunirse en 1924 debido a la guerra turca de la independencia, adoptó la música compuesta por Ali Rıfat Çağatay. The İstiklâl marşı (English: Independence hymn) is the national anthem of Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, officially adopted on 12 March 1921 - two and a half years before the 29 October 1923 establishment of the Republic of Turkey, both as a motivational musical saga for the troops fighting in the Turkish War of Independence, and as an anthem for a Republic that was yet to be established.
Penned by Mehmet Âkif Ersoy, ultimately composed by Osman Zeki Üngör, the theme is one of affection for the Turkish homeland, freedom, and faith, of sacrifice for liberty, and of hope and devotion, explored through visual, tactile and kinesthetic imagery as they relate to the flag, the human spirit and the soil of the homeland.
The manuscript by Ersoy, between the title line İstiklal Marşı and the first text line, carries the dedication Kahraman Ordumuza -- "To our Heroic Army", the army that won the Independence War. The lyrics reflect on the sacrifice of the soldiers during the War.
The anthem was the subject of a brief copyright dispute in 2010, when GEMA, the German music copyright society, attempted to collect royalties on the anthem. The composition has also been adopted as the National Anthem of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Pamukkale is Turkish for cotton castle, even though it is made up of travertine limestone run-off from the area's hot springs.
This slow moving rock formation creates dazzling stalactites and terraces
The natural hot springs have drawn tourists to this site for thousands of years.
This site is the former home of Hierapolis, a Roman Bath town.
The waters here are said to be good for the skin and eyes, and can be a remedy for asthma as well.
Shoes must be worn in the hot springs, to protect the deposits of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Turkey is stating as a model to be followed by the new Arab regimes, a model of democracy and secularism in the Muslim world. It is this Turkey, Muslim and modern that we will discover and query in this roadmap. The road movie will take us from Gaziantep, on the Syrian border, which represents the new Turkey AKP, liberal and Muslim, shown as a democratic model for the Arab world, to Diyarbakir in the center of a forgotten Kurdish region, to Ankara the capital which embodies the secular and Republican legacy of Ataturk, and Istanbul the sublime, between the East and the West, between modernity and tradition. These steps and sequences (indicative) were selected to highlight the following issues: Did the AKP, Islamist and Liberal, invented a true Muslim and secular democracy? Is this a model applicable to the Arab countries? What about freedom of expression? What about democracy when 101 journalists are in jail and 2/3 are Kurdish? (China comes in second position with 35 journalists imprisoned) Is Turkey a bridge between Europe, the Caucasus and Asia, or a Trojan program in an expending spirit of Islam? You will see contradictions abound around this democratic model.
