Сара́зм — первый в Таджикистане памятник Всемирного наследия. Это древнейшее поселение (IV—II тысячелетие до н. э.) расположенное в 15 км к западу от районного центра Пенджикент на левом берегу реки Зеравшан. Большую историческую и культурную ценность представляют хорошо сохранившиеся дворцовые и культовые сооружения, общественные и жилые строения.[1]. На месте раскопок были найдены металлические и каменные изделия, а также многочисленные украшения изготовленные из драгоценных камней и обработанных морских раковин. Поселение расположено в пределах БМАК. Разрушение поселения по времени совпадает с вторжением на эту территорию кочевых индо-иранских племён.
Название «Саразм» происходит от древнего таджикского слова «саризамин» (начало земли)[2].

Sarazm: 15 Kilometer westlich der Stadt Pandschakent befindet sich die Ausgrabungsstätte von Sarazm. Hier wurden 1976 Reste einer frühgeschichtlichen Siedlung aus dem 3. oder 2. Jahrtausend vor Christus entdeckt. Die Siedlung umfasst eine Größe von ca. 130 Hektar und bestand aus Lehmhäusern. Bei den vom Archäologen Isakov geleiteten Grabungen wurden zahlreiche Werkzeuge, Messer, Äxte und Gewichte gefunden. Die Herkunft dieser Stücke aus Indien, Afghanistan und dem Iran weist auf bestehende Handelskontakte der früheren Bewohner hin. Bemerkenswertester Fund ist die „Prinzessin von Zerazm“, in deren Grab Perlen aus Lasurit und verschiedene Schmuckstücke lagen. Heute befinden sich diese Fundstücke im Museum für Antike in Duschanbe.

Honestly, the food just kept coming. Although, and reluctantly, both Liza and I were a bit wary of it. Liza already had a bad stomach anyway, and I'm also wary of food that's washed in cold water. It's not necessarily being paranoid, it's just me not wanting to get ill. Taken on Saturday 27/August/2016.

Sarazm
Sarazm is an ancient town and also a jamoat in north-western Tajikistan. It dates back to the 4th millennium BCE and is today a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is located in Panjakent District in Sughd province.
The archaeological site of the ancient city of Sarazm is located near Durman, a town situated in the Zarafshan Valley of north-west Tajikistan in the Sughd province near the border with Uzbekistan.
Site description
The site indicates an early steppe presence in the Zarafshan Valley. Around 3000 BC, it was the largest exporting metallurgical center of Central Asia. It was abandoned after the arrival of the Andronovo settlers, around 2000 BC.
The city is believed to have been revived as a mining point to collect from nearby sources of turquoise. Established no later that 1500 BC, the city also served as an important regional agricultural and copper production center.
The town was discovered in 1976 by a local farmer named Ashurali Tailonov who found a copper dagger protruding from a nearby construction site. It was excavated by Abdullo Isakov and French archaeologists beginning in 1977.

The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Achaemenid Empire, Hephthalite Empire, Samanid Empire, Mongol Empire, Timurid dynasty, and the Russian Empire. As a result of the break up of the Soviet Union Tajikistan became an independent nation in 1991. A civil war was fought almost immediately after independence that lasted from 1992 to 1997 however since the end of the war, newly established political stability and foreign aid have allowed the country's economy to grow.
Tajikistan is a presidential republic consisting of four provinces. Most of Tajikistan's 8 million people belong to the Tajik ethnic group, who speak Tajik, a dialect of Modern Persian, although many people also speak Russian. Mountains cover more than 90% of the country. It has a transition economy that is dependent on aluminum and cotton production, its economy is the 126th largest in the world in terms of purchasing power and 136th largest in terms of nominal GDP.
Cultures in the region have been dated back to at least the 4th millennium BCE, including the Bronze Age Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex, the Andronovo cultures and the pro-urban site of Sarazm, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The earliest recorded history of the region dates back to about 500 BCE when much, if not all, of modern Tajikistan was part of the Achaemenid Empire. Some authors have also suggested that in the 7th and 6th century BCE parts of modern Tajikistan, including territories in the Zeravshan valley, formed part of Kambojas before it became part of the Achaemenid Empire. After the region's conquest by Alexander the Great it became part of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom, a successor state of Alexander's empire. Northern Tajikistan (the cities of Khujand and Panjakent) was part of Sogdia, a collection of city-states which was overrun by Scythians and Yuezhi nomadic tribes around 150 BCE. The Silk Road passed through the region and following the expedition of Chinese explorer Zhang Qian during the reign of Wudi (141–87 BCE) commercial relations between Han China and Sogdiana flourished. Sogdians played a major role in facilitating trade and also worked in other capacities, as farmers, carpetweavers, glassmakers, and woodcarvers.
The Kushan Empire, a collection of Yuezhi tribes, took control of the region in the first century CE and ruled until the 4th century CE during which time Buddhism, Nestorian Christianity, Zoroastrianism, and Manichaeism were all practiced in the region. Later the Hephthalite Empire, a collection of nomadic tribes, moved into the region and Arabs brought Islam in the early eighth century. Central Asia continued in its role as a commercial crossroads, linking China, the steppes to the north, and the Islamic heartland.
The Samanid Empire supplanted the Arabs and enlarged the cities of Samarkand and Bukhara (both of which are today part of Uzbekistan) which became the cultural centers of Tajiks. The Kara-Khanid Khanate conquered Transoxania (which corresponds approximately with modern-day Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, southern Kyrgyzstan and southwest Kazakhstan) and ruled between 999–1211. Their arrival in Transoxania signaled a definitive shift from Iranian to Turkic predominance in Central Asia, but gradually the Kara-khanids became assimilated into the Perso-Arab Muslim culture of the region.
The Tang dynasty also ruled Tajikistan as a protectorate, from 657 to 800.
During Genghis Khan's invasion of Khwarezmia in the early 13th century the Mongol Empire took control over nearly all of Central Asia. In less than a century the Mongol Empire broke up and modern Tajikistan came under the rule of the Chagatai Khanate. Tamerlane created the Timurid dynasty and took control of the region in the 14th century.

De stad Penjikent ("vijf dorpen") ligt in Khujand gebied van Tadzjikistan in een schilderachtige Zeravshan rivierdal. Misschien wel de vijf dorpen begon de geschiedenis van deze opmerkelijke stad die is ontstaan in de 5de-8ste eeuw na Christus. Penjikent van die tijd was een van de belangrijkste culturele en ambachtelijke centra van Sogd. Het werd zelfs de naam "Centraal-Aziatische Pompeii".

Penjekent - Istarafshan - Khujand 320km

Rijden naar Istarafshan stad: Istaravshan is een museumstad, het oude centrum van handel en ambachten, een van de oudste steden van de Centraal-Azië. In 2002 draaide Istaravshan 2.500 jaar oud. De stad werd in de zesde eeuw voor Christus gesticht door een Akhemenid koning Cyrus, die de nederzetting versterkt door middel van drie muur lijnen en een citadel. In de tweede -seventh eeuw voor Christus de oude sentiment werd Mugteppa gelegen op het grondgebied van Istaravshan. Mugteppa was de residentie van de lokale aristocratie die daar gebouwd talrijke paleizen onderscheiden door oorspronkelijke expressieve architectuur. Het bewijs van die werd gevonden in Bundzhikat (Kala en Kakh-Kakh) en Chil'khudzhra nederzettingen welke structuren had verrijkt met paleizen en cult gebouwen ingericht met schilderijen en gebeeldhouwde panelen. Bijvoorbeeld in Bundzhikat de archeologen vonden het schilderij met de afbeelding van een wolvin voeden twee baby's - het symbool van de contacten tussen het Westen en het Oosten. Tijdens de jaren van Arabische soevereiniteit werd Istaravshan een provincie Arabische Kalifaat. Het was in deze tijd waarin de islamitische architectonische structuren van portal-koepel ontwerp, zoals moskeeën, madrassa's, mausolea, minaretten, etc. begon te verschijnen.

Naar de mening van historici legendarische stad van Alexander-Eskhata (Alexandrië Extreme) werd gebouwd door Alexander de Grote op de plaats van de huidige Khujand (de 5e eeuw voor Christus) en word de stad van hoogontwikkelde cultuur, belangrijk commercieel en ambachten centrum. Het in vele opzichten spreekt het kan worden verklaard door de gunstige ligging. Khujand staat bij de ingang naar de vruchtbare Ferganadal. Hierdoor was het een van de belangrijkste centra van de Grote Zijde weg en genoten van welvaart en rijkdom. Een van de oudste steden van de Centraal-Azië Khujandhas al bekend sinds de 7e eeuw. In de 19e-eeuwse en na de Russische intrusionKhujand werd het centrum van de wijk van de snelle industriële ontwikkeling.

Alte Stadt Pandschakent
Neben dem modernen Ort befinden sich die Ruinen einer sogdischen Stadt, die seit 1947 ausgegraben wird und ein wichtiger archäologischer Fundort in Tadschikistan ist. Deren Gebiet war einst ca. 19 Hektar groß, von denen mittlerweile ca. ein Drittel ausgegraben wurden. Die alte Stadt hatte ihre Blüte vor allem im 7. und 8. Jhd. n. Chr., als sie an der Seidenstraße lag und Hauptstadt eines sogdischen Fürstentums war. Zerstört wurde sie durch die arabische Eroberung des Landes.
Die eigentliche Stadt wurde von einer acht Meter dicken Mauer umgeben. Daneben lag die Zitadelle, in der die lokalen Herrscher wohnten. Außerhalb der Mauern befand sich eine Vorstadt und die Totenstadt. Die Wohnstadt bestand aus zwei- bis dreistöckigen Hausanlagen.
Die Grabungsstätte zeichnet sich durch gute Erhaltungsbedingungen aus. Viele Holzgegenstände (Möbel, Skulpturen) sind noch in einem bemerkenswerten Zustand. Die Besonderheit des Fundortes sind jedoch Wandmalereien, die sich in den Häusern der Oberschicht und in den Tempeln der Stadt fanden. Hieraus leitet sich die Bezeichnung „Pompeji Tadschikistans“ ab.
Kern der Wohnstadt sind zwei Tempel, die jeweils auf einer Plattform standen und von einem weiten Hof umgeben waren. Sie waren reich ausgemalt. Die hier verehrten Gottheiten bleiben unbekannt. Zentrum der Häuser der Oberschicht war ein Festsaal, der großenteils bebildert war, wobei hier zumeist Epen dargestellt sind. Der Festsaal ist oftmals mit verzierten Holzsäulen und einer kunstvoll getäfelten Decke ausgestattet gewesen.
Aus den Malereien lassen sich buddhistische, zoroastrische und manichäistische Einflüsse ablesen, eine Mischung östlicher und westlicher Stilelemente, die oft den Kampf des Guten gegen das Böse darstellen. Sie befinden sich heute zu einem großen Teil in der Eremitage in Sankt Petersburg bzw. im Museum für Antike in Duschanbe. Für die Konservierung der Ausgrabungsstätte selbst gilt der Aufwand als zu hoch. Artefakte werden geborgen und die Ruinen sich selbst überlassen
Rudakimuseum: Das Museum im Ortszentrum zeigt u.a. Funde aus der alten sogdischen Stadt Pandschakent und der Ausgrabungsstätte von Zerazm. Außerdem informieren einige Räume über die Geschichte der Region und die heimische Tierwelt des Zerafšantals. Ein weiterer Raum ist dem Leben und Wirken des persischen Dichters Rudaki gewidmet.
