Courken George Deukmejian, Jr. (/djuːkˈmeɪdʒən/; born June 6, 1928) is an American politician who as a Republican served as the 35th Governor of California (1983–1991) and as California Attorney General (1979–1983).
Deukmejian is the first and, so far, the only governor of a US state of Armenian descent.
Deukmejian was born Courken George Deukmejian, Jr. in Menands, New York to Armenian American parents. His parents were Armenians who emigrated from the Ottoman Empire in the early 1900s to escape the Armenian Genocide. His father, who lost his sister during the Genocide, was a rug merchant and born in Gaziantep. Deukmejian's mother was born in Erzurum and worked for Montgomery Ward and later for New York State. Deukmejian graduated a B.A. in Sociology from Siena College in 1949. He then earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from St. John's University in 1952. From 1953 to 1955, he served in the U.S. Army, assigned to the Judge Advocate General's Corps.
Deukmejian moved to California in 1955 where his sister, Anna Ashjian, introduced him to his future wife Gloria Saatjian, whose parents were also immigrants from Armenia. They married in 1957 and had three children: two daughters, born in 1964 and 1969; and one son, born in 1966.
The Governor of California is the chief executive of the California state government, commander-in-chief of the California National Guard and the California State Military Reserve, whose responsibilities also include making annual State of the State addresses to the California State Legislature, submitting the budget, and ensuring that state laws are enforced. The position was created in 1849, the year before California became a state.
The current governor is Jerry Brown, a Democrat who was inaugurated January 3, 2011, and who had previously served as governor from 1975 to 1983. In October 2013 Brown surpassed Earl Warren for the longest cumulative period of time served as governor.
Governors are elected by popular ballot and serve terms of four years, with a limit of two terms, if served after November 6, 1990. Governors take the following oath:
Governors take office on the first Monday after January 1 after their election.
The fourth season of Parks and Recreation originally aired in the United States on the NBC television network, and began on September 22, 2011, and ended on May 8, 2012. The season contained 22 episodes.
As with past seasons, it focused on Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and her staff at the parks and recreation department of the fictional Indiana town of Pawnee. However, this season featured an overarching story arc, beginning in the first episode and culminating in the finale, where Leslie ran for the city council of Pawnee.

George Deukmejian became governor of California in Jan. 1983, inheriting a budget crisis from outgoing governor Jerry Brown. Deukmejian would not raise taxes (although he did allow various revenue enhancements through closing of "loopholes). A stalemate over the budget erupted in July 1983 when the state began its fiscal year with no budget in place. However, budget pressures were basically relieved as the economy recovered. When he was up for re-election in 1986, Deukmejian could claim to have taken the state from "IOU to A-OK." By the end of his second term in 1990, however, things were no longer A-OK. The end of the Cold War and the resulting squeeze on military spending - combined with a national recession - created a new budget crisis and stalemate, inherited by Deukmejian's suc...

George Deukmejian was elected governor of California in 1982 and took over during a major state budget crisis. By the time he ran for re-election in 1986, he could claim having taken the state from "IOU to A-OK." Unfortunately, as the Cold War ended and the U.S. economy went into recession in the early 1990s, the state suffered another major budget crisis which was left to the next governor - Pete Wilson - to deal with. In these comments made in 2005, Deukmejian reflects on the problems of the state budget.
