In the spring of 1960, the aluminum manufacturer Aluminum Extrusions established the "First Chair in Educational Television. The company planned a series of self-produced programs, which it wanted to combine with re-performances of cultural programs from commercial broadcasters.
In this 20-minute program, a straight faced George Nelson presented a cultural history of weapon technology, which was at the same time a scathing commentary on the arms race during the Cold War. Its main statement: designers give form to the things that are most important to society and for which society allocates the largest budget because designers always do only what they are paid for.

The International Space Station has maintained a continuous human presence in space since November of 2000. Upon completion of the Space Station and the retirement of the Space Shuttle, NASA's emphasis has changed from on-orbit assembly to in-space utilization of a science and engineering research laboratory. In this talk, I will discuss evolving organizational models, current opportunities and avenues by which American companies and individuals have access to the Space Station. I will also briefly summarize the operations, technology, and engineering investigations that are planned or recommended for the Space Station.
Originally from Maine, Dr. George Nelson's affiliation with NASA began in 1998 as a graduate student research fellow. He began his full time NASA career in 2001 training flight controllers and astronauts on the electrical and thermal systems of the ISS. After serving as the the configuration manager for Space Station through much of assembly, he began his current tenure as manager of the Space Station Technology Demonstration Office through which all of the engineering and technology research is conducted on the Space Station.

Nelson George (born September 1, 1957) is an African American author, columnist, music and culture critic, journalist, and filmmaker. He has been nominated twice for the National Book Critics Circle Award.
He attended St. John's University, after which he served as a music editor for Billboard magazine from 1982 to 1989. While there, George published two books; Where Did Our Love Go: The Rise and Fall of the Motown Sound in 1986, and The Death of Rhythm & Blues in 1988. Nelson also wrote a column, entitled "Native Son," for the Village Voice from 1988 to 1992. He first got involved in film when, in 1986, he helped to finance director Spike Lee's debut feature She's Gotta Have It.
A lifelong resident of Brooklyn, New York, he currently lives in Fort Greene.
George has authored fifteen non-fiction books, including the bestseller The Michael Jackson Story in 1984, Blackface: Reflections on African-Americans and the Movies in 1994, Elevating the Game: Black Men and basketball in 1992 and Hip Hop America in 1998. With Alan Leeds he co-authored The James Brown Reader, a collection of articles about the Godfather of Soul in 2008. in 1991 he co-wrote the Halle Berry vehicle Strictly Business and in 1993 Nelson was co-creator of the movie CB4 starring comedian Chris Rock.

In this talk, I will discuss evolving organizational models, current opportunities and avenues by which American companies and individuals have access to the Space Station. I will also briefly summarize the operations, technology, and engineering investigations that are planned or recommended for the Space Station.
Originally from Maine, Dr. George Nelson's affiliation with NASA began in 1998 as a graduate student research fellow. He began his full time NASA career in 2001 training flight controllers and astronauts on the electrical and thermal systems of the ISS.
