Johnny Guitar is a Western drama film starring Sterling Hayden, Joan Crawford, Mercedes McCambridge, Scott Brady and directed by Nicholas Ray.
The plot is set in boundless Arizona, where Joan Crawford (Vienna), an aggressive and strong-willed saloonkeeper maintains a volatile relationship with the local cattlemen and townsfolk.
Stubborn and combative, Vienna goes against the will of the cattlemen in the construction of a railroad, and she permits a suspected stage robber Scott Brady (The Dancin' Kid) to share her bed and his confederates to frequent her saloon.
Sterling Hayden (Johnny Guitar) Vienna's ex-lover, arrives at the saloon, renews his love for the woman and offers his protection. Everything seems fine for both, until The Dancin 'Kid and his gang rob the town bank. The suspicions of the townsfolk, are directed towards Vienna, convinced that she has played a part.
Merceds McCambridge (Emma Small) a cattle rancher, who has long hated Vienna, persuades the townsfolk to hang woman.
But Emma, will fail in its intent.
In 2008, Johnny Guitar was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
The Chicago Reader's Jonathan Rosenbaum lists Johnny Guitar as one of the 100 best American films.
The film is beloved of French critics and filmmakers, such as François Truffaut, who described it as the "Beauty and the Beast of Westerns, a Western dream".
The making of the film was characterized from rivalry between the two first women Crawford-McCambridge, who in life as in the film, proved to have a great personality.
In an interview in the Criterion Collection version of The Killing, Sterling Hayden stated that he did not care for Johnny Guitar. "They put string, like you get at the grocery store, over my guitar in case I accidentally hit them," he said, acknowledging that "I can't play guitar, and can't sing a good-goddamn, either." "I was at war on that film, during the daytime, with Joan Crawford," he recalled, "and at night with my second wife." Despite his reservations about the film, Hayden acknowledged its popularity.
Music for this tribute is the song Johnny Guitar written by Peggy Lee and Victor Young and originally sung by Peggy Lee herself.

Peggy Lee (May 26, 1920 January 21, 2002) was an American jazz and popular music singer, songwriter, composer and actress in a career spanning nearly seven decades. From her beginnings as a vocalist on local radio, to singing with Benny Goodman's big band, she was forging her own sophisticated persona, Lee evolved into a multi-faceted artist and performer. She wrote music for films, acted, and created conceptual record albums -- encompassing poetry, jazz, chamber pop, art songs, and other genres.
Johnny Guitar (1954) is a Republic Pictures western film starring Joan Crawford, Sterling Hayden, Mercedes McCambridge, and Scott Brady.
"Johnny Guitar" is actually based on a novel by Roy Chanslor and is undisputedly the granddaddy of the Female Western Film, because it proudly serves as the original prototype of this genre. It's also a little known-fact that there really was a real Johnny "Guitar!" Johnny "Guitar" Watson was a well-known musician, who adopted his moniker after he saw Sterling Hayden play the title-role. Johnny Guitar is a 1954 American Republic Pictures western drama film starring Joan Crawford, Sterling Hayden, Mercedes McCambridge, and Scott Brady.
The screenplay was based upon a novel by Roy Chanslor. Though credited to Philip Yordan, he was merely a front for the actual screenwriter, blacklistee Ben Maddow. Filmed in Republic's Trucolor process, the film was directed by Nicholas Ray and produced by Herbert J. Yates.
In 2008, Johnny Guitar was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Plot
On the outskirts of a wind-swept Arizona cattle town, an aggressive and strong-willed saloonkeeper named Vienna maintains a volatile relationship with the local cattlemen and townsfolk. Not only does she support the railroad being laid nearby (the cattlemen oppose it), but she permits "The Dancin' Kid" (her former amour) and his confederates to frequent her saloon. The locals, led by McIvers but egged on by Emma Small, a onetime rival of Vienna, are determined to force Vienna out of town, and the hold-up of the stage (they suspect, erroneously, by "The Dancin' Kid") offers a perfect pretext. Vienna faces them down, helped by the mysterious and just arrived Johnny Guitar. McIvers gives Vienna, Johnny Guitar and "The Dancin Kid" and his sidekicks 24 hours to leave. Johnny turns out to be Vienna's ex-lover and a reformed gunslinger whose real name is Johnny Logan. A smouldering love/hate relationship develops.

Peggy Lee - Johnny Guitar
Peggy Lee (May 26, 1920 January 21, 2002) was an American jazz and popular music singer, songwriter, composer and actress in a career spanning nearly seven decades. From her beginnings as a vocalist on local radio, to singing with Benny Goodman's big band, she was forging her own sophisticated persona, Lee evolved into a multi-faceted artist and performer. She wrote music for films, acted, and created conceptual record albums -- encompassing poetry, jazz, chamber pop, art songs, and other genres. The plot is set in boundless Arizona, where Joan Crawford (Vienna), an aggressive and strong-willed saloonkeeper maintains a volatile relationship with the local cattlemen and townsfolk.
Stubborn and combative, Vienna goes against the will of the cattlemen in the construction of a railroad, and she permits a suspected stage robber Scott Brady (The Dancin' Kid) to share her bed and his confederates to frequent her saloon.
Sterling Hayden (Johnny Guitar) Vienna's ex-lover, arrives at the saloon, renews his love for the woman and offers his protection. Everything seems fine for both, until The Dancin 'Kid and his gang rob the town bank. The suspicions of the townsfolk, are directed towards Vienna, convinced that she has played a part.
Merceds McCambridge (Emma Small) a cattle rancher, who has long hated Vienna, persuades the townsfolk to hang woman.
But Emma, will fail in its intent.
In 2008, Johnny Guitar was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
The Chicago Reader's Jonathan Rosenbaum lists Johnny Guitar as one of the 100 best American films.
The film is beloved of French critics and filmmakers, such as François Truffaut, who described it as the "Beauty and the Beast of Westerns, a Western dream".
The making of the film was characterized from rivalry between the two first women Crawford-McCambridge, who in life as in the film, proved to have a great personality.
In an interview in the Criterion Collection version of The Killing, Sterling Hayden stated that he did not care for Johnny Guitar. "They put string, like you get at the grocery store, over my guitar in case I accidentally hit them," he said, acknowledging that "I can't play guitar, and can't sing a good-goddamn, either." "I was at war on that film, during the daytime, with Joan Crawford," he recalled, "and at night with my second wife." Despite his reservations about the film, Hayden acknowledged its popularity.
Music for this tribute is the song Johnny Guitar written by Peggy Lee and Victor Young and originally sung by Peggy Lee herself.

Train Engineer Identified, More Details Emerge From Deadly NJ Train Crash

The engineer who was at the controls during the tragic train crash on Thursday morning was a veteran of the industry with 29 years of experience named Thomas Gallagher, according to The Star Tribune. "It was very shocking," said his neighbor Tom Jones. "I'm just heartbroken for them, they're just wonderful people." ...
