TUM-DLS-AIH: Dave Hawkes, From Rock-and-Roll to Sailing in the Rain via 46 Years of Fun in Med Img
I will describe how my initial foray into radiobiology with a physics degree got me involved in the early days of CT scanning, and then my determination to move beyond imaging for diagnosis to directly guiding interventions. I will share my experiences of the formation of CISG, CMIC and WEISS, illustrated with the story of image registration and developing image guided interventions in the brain, prostate and liver. I will finish with the exhilaration, promises and pitfalls of the revolution in deep learning and an aside on what dealing with the pandemic teaches us about rapid translation to clinic.

February 18, 2022 | Lu Xun’s short story “Mourning the Dead” (also translated as “Regret for the Past”) never ceases to fascinate, puzzle, and pain its readers ever since its publication in 1926. Scion of the High Lord Kao Yang,
Po Yung was my father's name.
When She T'i pointed to the first month of the year,
on the day keng yin, I passed from the womb.
My father, seeing the aspect of my nativity,
took omens to give me an auspicious name.
The name he gave me was True Exemplar;
the title he gave me was Divine Balance.
Having from birth this inward beauty,
I added to it fair outward adornment:
I dressed in selinea and shady angelica,
and twined autumn orchids to make a garland.
Swiftly I sped, as in fearful pursuit,
afraid Time would race on and leave me behind.
In the morning I gathered the angelica on the mountains;
in the evening I plucked the sedges of the islets....

The last episode shows how Cao Xueqin, a man who'd witnessed the country's best days and endured its worst hardships, managed to sublimate his experience into a plaintive yet beautiful elegy to a bygone era and its lost ideals.

February 18, 2022 | Lu Xun’s short story “Mourning the Dead” (also translated as “Regret for the Past”) never ceases to fascinate, puzzle, and pain its readers ever since its publication in 1926. As the author’s only fictional work on the subject of free love, it seems to have done a better job dissolving rather than constructing both its subject matter (free love) and its form (fiction). More than a critical observation and representation of the limitations of such things, the author often appears to be absented-minded. While the work is known for its passionate intensity, such passion and intensity prove elusive vis-à-vis what is tangible within the thematic and narrative space. Even though the dilemmas and agonies of the male and female protagonists continue to be the object of endless analysis and interpretation, no persuasive reading of this work seems within reach, as the doomed lovers stand for opposing values and ethical norms that cannot be reconciled or even defended. How could this elusiveness be possible (and for so long)? What is driving the story, how does that force work, and where does it reside? In this talk Xudong Zhang showed that all these questions can be effectively answered if we introduce a different set of perspectives and frames of reference to shed new light on the mystery.
This event was part of the China and the West: Cultural Dialogues series, sponsored by Georgetown University's Future of the Humanities Project (a partnership with Campion Hall, Oxford, and Blackfriars Hall, Oxford) in cooperation with the Society for Anglo-Chinese Understanding in London.
