Class of 1942 UW-Madison graduate, Walter Mirisch, is the producer, in whole or in part, of more than one hundred films. Among the Mirisch Company's honors are three Oscars for best picture —The Apartment (1960), West Side Story (1961), and In the Heat of the Night (1967). Mirisch has also received two honorary Academy Awards, the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award (1977) and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (1983); he has been honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award (1977) presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the David O. Selznick Lifetime Achievement Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures (1995) presented by the Producers Guild of America. He has been decorated by the Republic of France with its Order of Arts and Letters, has received an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters from the University of Wisconsin--Madison, and is a recipient of the UCLA Medal, that university's highest award. Mirisch served three terms as president of the Producers Guild of America and four terms as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. His work has led to eighty-seven Academy Award nominations and twenty-eight Oscars. After a TCM film fest screening of "Fall Guy," a rare film noir from 1947 starring Leo Penn (Sean's dad), producer Walter Mirisch (right) talked with author Foster Hirsch. Mirisch went on to produce "The Magnificent Seven," "West Side Story," "The Great Escape," "The Pink Panther" and "In the Heat of the Night," among many others. The screening and talk were Saturday, April 14, at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood.

Walter Mortimer Mirisch (born 8 November 1921) is an American film producer. In his long and successful motion picture career, Walter Mirisch has produced some of the industry’s finest and most memorable films. He is President and Executive Head of Production of The Mirisch Corporation, an independent filmmaking organization, which he formed in 1957 with his brothers, Marvin and Harold.
A native of New York, Mirisch graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School and entered the movie business as a summer vacation usher in Jersey City’s State Theater, soon moving up to higher positions at other theaters. In 1942, he received a BA degree from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the following year graduated from Harvard’s Graduate School of Business Administration. In 1947, he produced his first film, Fall Guy, for Monogram Pictures Corporation.
At the age of 29, Mirisch became production head at Allied Artists Studio with some 30 films to oversee. During his tenure, he found time to personally produce Flat Top, Wichita, which received a Golden Globe from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as Best Outdoor Drama of 1955, The First Texan, and An Annapolis Story. He supervised the productions of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Friendly Persuasion, and Love in the Afternoon, among many others.

Charlton Heston (born John Charles Carter; October 4, 1923 – April 5, 2008) was an American actor of film, theatre and television. Heston is known for heroic roles in films such as The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, El Cid, and Planet of the Apes. He also is well known for his roles in the films The Greatest Show on Earth and Touch of Evil.
Heston was also known for his political activism. In the 1950s and 1960s he was one of a handful of Hollywood actors to speak openly against racism and was an active supporter of the Civil Rights Movement. Initially a moderate Democrat, he later supported conservative Republican policies and was president of the National Rifle Association from 1998 to 2003.
Heston was born John Charles Carter, the son of Lilla (née Charlton; 1899–1994) and Russell Whitford Carter (1897–1966), a sawmill operator. Most sources state that he was born in Evanston, Illinois. Heston's autobiography, however, and some other sources place his birth in No Man's Land, Illinois, which usually refers to a then-unincorporated area now part of Wilmette, a wealthy northern suburb of Chicago. Heston said in a 1995 interview that he was not very good at remembering addresses or his early childhood.

Mirisch went on to produce "The Magnificent Seven," "West Side Story," "The Great Escape," "The Pink Panther" and "In the Heat of the Night," among many others. The screening and talk were Saturday, April 14, at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood. -

FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Great Escape is based on the true story of a group of Allied prisoners of war who managed to escape from an allegedly impenetrable Nazi prison camp during World War II. At the beginning of the film, the Nazis gather all their most devious and troublesome POWs and place them at a new prison camp, which was designed to be impervious to escapes. Immediately, the prisoners develop a scheme where they will leave the camp by building three separate escape tunnels. Richard Attenborough is the British soldier who masterminds the whole plan, and who commands his motley squad--featuring Charles Bronson as a Polish trench-digging expert, James Garner as an American with a talent for theft, Donald Pleasence as a masterful forger, and Steve McQueen as an American rebel--through the construction of the tunnels and, eventually, their escape. An epic adventure film, The Great Escape runs nearly three hours, featuring a rousing Elmer Bernstein score and exciting action sequences -- including a notorious motorcycle chase between McQueen and the Nazis -- the likes of which had never been seen before in Hollywood productions.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Great Escape is based on the true story of a group of Allied prisoners of war who managed to escape from an allegedly impenetrable Nazi prison camp during World War II. At the beginning of the film, the Nazis gather all their most devious and troublesome POWs and place them at a new prison camp, which was designed to be impervious to escapes. Immediately, the prisoners develop a scheme where they will leave the camp by building three separate escape tunnels. Richard Attenborough is the British soldier who masterminds the whole plan, and who commands his motley squad--featuring Charles Bronson as a Polish trench-digging expert, James Garner as an American with a talent for theft, Donald Pleasence as a masterful forger, and Steve McQueen as an American rebel--through the construction of the tunnels and, eventually, their escape. An epic adventure film, The Great Escape runs nearly three hours, featuring a rousing Elmer Bernstein score and exciting action sequences -- including a notorious motorcycle chase between McQueen and the Nazis -- the likes of which had never been seen before in Hollywood productions.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai (1954) is westernized as The Magnificent Seven. Yul Brynner plays Chris, a mercenary hired to protect a Mexican farming village from its annual invasion by bandit Calvera (Eli Wallach). As Elmer Bernstein's unforgettable theme music (later immortalized as the "Marlboro Man" leitmotif) blasts away in the background, Chris rounds up six fellow soldiers of fortune to help him form a united front against the bandits. The remaining "magnificent six" are played by Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, Horst Buchholz, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn, and (the one that everybody forgets) Brad Dexter. Though jam-packed with action, William Roberts's screenplay pauses long enough to flesh out each of its characters, allowing the audience to pick their own favorites. The Magnificent Seven was followed by three sequels, not to mention dozens of imitations.

In this remake of Michael Curtiz' boxer drama "Kid Galahad" (1937) Elvis can be seen alongside US film- and TV-stars Gig Young and Charles Bronson. This is one of my favorite scenes from the movie when boxing amateur Walter Gulick (Elvis) acts as sparring partner for 5 $ per round and accidentally knocks out his partner. The moment when he asks "Do I still ge my five Dollars?" he's actually acting as if he really means it. -

BlackTree TV EP Jamaal Finkley sits down with stars of the new film, The Losers, based off a DC Comic. In this interview, we catch up with budding superstar Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
An explosive action tale of betrayal and revenge, The Losers centers around the members of an elite Special Forces unit sent to the Bolivian jungle on a search and destroy mission. But the team—Clay, Jensen, Roque, Pooch and Cougar—soon find that they have become the target of a deadly double cross, instigated from the inside by a powerful enemy known only as Max.
Making good use of the fact that they are now presumed dead, the group goes deeply undercover in a dangerous plot to clear their names and even the score with Max. Visionary and Co-Chair of the evening, Wallis Annenberg, and fellow Co-Chair Jamie Tisch, hosted a night to remember with cocktails, performance pieces, dinner and an exclusive one-night-only performance starring some of Hollywood's most distinguished and celebrated actors including Kevin Spacey, John Lithgow and Diane Lane.

Throughout the opening of the evening, guests were treated to a whirlwind of special performances and event attractions to dazzle the senses including: Australian troupe, Strange Fruit, DJ Michael Smith, Tours of the Jamie TischSculpture Garden, Flamenco Guitar Trio, lavish Couture Floral creatures, passed hors d'eouvres by Wolfgang Puck, wine tasting selection provided byTuscan Estates of Il Borro & Castiglion del Bosco, an exclusive musical act by Amadeus Leopard and personal tours of the new venue.
Upon the conclusion of the artistic performances, guests were directed into theBram Goldsmith Theatre for the night's original and main performance, entitled A DREAM IN AN ENVELOPE starring Kevin Spacey, John Lithgow andDiane Lane featuring dancers from the Paris Opera Ballet, and Grammy-winning violinist Hilary Hahn. The program paid tribute to the many letters of such notable figures as Tennessee Williams, Martha Graham, Groucho Marx and Peter Tchaikovsky that traveled through the historic Post Office over the years. Broadway star and vocalist Terri White opened and closed the performance with musical numbers featuring a 24-piece orchestra and an ensemble of singing and dancing Postmen.
Guests were then escorted to the dinner tent and greeted by twenty-four enormous copper mirrors and sculpted moldings which accented the walls. Dinner tables were dressed in rich blue linen each topped with an architectural "light box" centerpiece, inspired by the design of architect Zoltan E. Pali. Accents of Ferragamo's signature red were threaded throughout the ceremonial dinner centerpieces featuring floral accents, and a program/menu card. Three 15×30 feet video walls featured Intelligent Dance by Wilderbe, a performance project mixing human imaging with computer projection to create a dynamically choreographed duet between human and computer.
After welcome speeches by Mayor of Beverly Hills, John A. Mirisch, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Jerry Magnin, guests enjoyed a dinner performance by Amadeus Leopold, as well as a Ferragamo Fashion Show, introduced by Gala Co-Chair Jamie Tisch and evening's sponsor Ferruccio Ferragamo. Italian tenor and one of the most highly regarded and respected opera singers of our time, Vittorio Grigolo performed during the runway presentation of the Spring / Summer 2014 collection by Creative Director, Massamiliano Giornettiincluding new and exclusive looks that premiered during the evening.
The evening came to a close with guests enjoying After Glow in the Grand Hall with cappuccinos, espressos and sweets with contemporary music by DJ Michael Smith.

Jon Paul Puno makes his international premiere with his self-titled debut album produced by Multi-Platinum GRAMMY® Award winning producer Robert “Bob” Cutarella (Eric Clapton, Sting, Joss Stone). Named #20 on the "Top 50 Artists in 2012" of the UK’s Classical-Crossover.co.uk chart, he is captivating audiences worldwide with a voice described as lush as velvet.
Drawing from the lead single Via Sacra, a rousing anthem penned by Giovanni Stellini inspired by the main street of ancient Rome by that name (Latin for “Sacred Road”), the album “mirrors the journey of life itself—songs that reflect love, loss, pain and hope,” Puno told Turkish newspaper Agazete in an interview.
Selecting the songs for the album was “an organic process that developed over time. For instance, the idea of recording the Beatles song Nowhere Man was inspired a few years back in a studio when Bob heard his friend fiddling on the guitar with the song and he wanted me to recreate that intimate moment.” One of the album highlights is a soaring orchestral version of Snow Patrol’s Run, arranged by Puno himself. In fact, it was one of the very first songs he self-produced during his early forays into music which caught the attention of record producer Robert Cutarella.
Behind some of the biggest names in music, industry powerhouse Cutarella has garnered hits with legends such as Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Eric Clapton, The BeeGees, Pink Floyd, The Police, Elton John, R.E.M., Michael Bolton, Dolly Parton, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, Cyndi Lauper and Slash. Also on board is GRAMMY® and Emmy Award winning engineer and producer Francis Buckley who has worked with the likes of Quincy Jones, B.B. King, Bono, Alanis Morisette, Aerosmith, Paula Abdul, Van Halen, Lea Salonga, LL Cool, Deborah Cox and Adam Sandler. His movie and television credits include, City Of Angels, The Wedding Singer, Flashdance, Jungle Book and the FOX American Idol® Ford music videos.
An acclaimed filmmaker, Puno is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s prestigious School of Cinematic Arts and it was there he discovered he had an operatic voice. Having made his directorial debut at the age of 16 with his films garnering attention worldwide including at the International Festival of Human Rights in Barcelona, Spain, Ricardo Montalbán’s Nosotros American Latino Film Festival in Hollywood, the Atlanta Film Festival and the Austin Film Festival as well as serving on the jury of the Mill Valley International Film Festival, he would eventually venture into music.
In 2014, Puno took the stage alongside a lineup of legendary Beverly Hills celebrities including Pat Boone, Betty White, Larry King, Richard Simmons, Florence Henderson and the Sherman Brothers, backed by the Los Angeles Lawyers Philharmonic Orchestra to perform at his hometown Beverly Hills' high-profile star-studded 100th Birthday Concert to a sold-out, capacity audience at the historic Saban Theatre.
He performed alongside FOX American Idol® Pia Toscano at the Power of Giving Gala hosted by NFL Super Bowl Champion and FOX Sports Analyst Ryan Nece to benefit Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA and the Ryan Nece Foundation and opened for NBC's The Voice star Cheesa at the world famous Conga Room at L.A. Live. Its stage graced by the likes of Shakira, Carlos Santana and Enrique Iglesias, the iconic Conga Room is renowned for its hip ambiance and hot performers.
Among his philanthropic activities, Puno hosted a packed charity benefit for the Good Shepherd Center for Homeless Women and Children at Porta Via Beverly Hills attended by Beverly Hills dignitaries and friends including Mayor Julian A. Gold, M.D. (2015) and Mayor John A. Mirisch (2013) who were treated to a preview performance of his debut album. He premiered his single Miracle at the 2015 Good Shepherd Center Gala introduced by Los Angeles Councilmember Tom LaBonge held at the exclusive Jonathan Club, an elite high-society hub founded in 1895 where some of Los Angeles' most influential residents are members (Los Angeles Times).
Puno headlined a red carpet charity event held at the Sofitel Beverly Hills for the Beverly Hills Education Foundation and Friends of Beverly Gardens Park and was joined on stage by special guest crooner Mayor John A. Mirisch (Beverly Hills Courier). He gave back to his alma mater by making a special musical appearance at the USC APAA Scholarship and Awards Gala held at the Langham Huntington where he was introduced by Emmy Award winner and ABC7 Eyewitness News Anchor David Ono.
A leader in the Beverly Hills community, Puno serves on the Mayor’s Committee for Next Generation Leaders, is an Ambassador of the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce, member of the Beverly Hills Centennial Committees and creator of the Beverly Hills Centennial Commemorative Stamp.
