Lewis (Scottish Gaelic: Leòdhas, pronounced [ʎɔː.əs̪], also Isle of Lewis) is the northern part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island of the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides (an archipelago) of Scotland. The total area of Lewis is 683 square miles (1,770 km2).
Lewis is, in general, the lower lying part of Lewis and Harris, with the other part, Harris, being more mountainous. The flatter, more fertile land means Lewis contains the largest settlement, Stornoway, and three-quarters of the population of the Western Isles. Beyond human habitation, the island's diverse habitats are home to an assortment of flora and fauna, such as the golden eagle, red deer and seals and are recognised in a number of conservation areas.
Lewis is of Presbyterian tradition with a rich history, having once been part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.

Beverly Lewis is a Christian fiction novelist and children's author of over 70 books.
She was born Beverly Marie Jones, and is a former schoolteacher and musician. She started playing the piano at age 5, and began writing short stories and poetry when she was 9 years old.
Much of her writing focuses on the Anabaptist heritage and the Old Order Amish. Her maternal grandmother, Ada Ranck Buchwalter, was born into an Old Order Mennonite Church, which interested Mrs. Lewis in her own "plain heritage." Her father was a pastor in Lancaster, Pennsylvania (the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch community), where she was born and grew up. She was raised and continues to be part of the Assemblies of God community.
She went to Evangel University, and received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2003. She is also a member of the National League of American Pen Women.
Beverly is married to David Lewis, and has 3 grown children and 3 grandchildren. They live in Colorado.

When you're planning your visit to Scotland you can't forget to include at least one of the islands on your itinerary. We pondered of them all and the different ways in which to get there and eventually decided on The Isle of Skye and the Isle of Lewis and Harris. I admit I was quite nervous about driving on the opposite side from what I am used to and after being in Edinburgh for a month, I was extra nervous about city driving. We decided to take the bus to Inverness, a smaller city, and rent a car from there. I am glad we did because we just wouldn't have been able to explore the islands the way we did, with lot's of time, freedom and flexibility if we hadn't. I adjusted quite quickly after a couple of laps around the hotel parking lot and away we went. Reaching for the seatbelt on the wrong side or constantly wanting to rest the wrong arm while driving were the only adjustments I really had to make, there are constant reminders and the signs are clear so there was no trouble whatsoever. Furthermore, once you are on the islands, the roads for the most part, are single track and other cars are few and far between.

The northern part of the island is called Lewis, the southern is Harris and both are frequently referred to as if they were separate islands. The boundary between Lewis and Harris is formed by a line with Loch Resort on the west and Loch Seaforth on the east. The island does not have a common name in either English or Scottish Gaelic and is referred to as 'Lewis and Harris', 'Lewis with Harris', 'Harris with Lewis' etc. Rarely, the collective name of the Long Island is used, although this is normally applied to the entire Outer Hebrides. Most of Harris is very hilly, with more than thirty peaks above 1,000 ft (300 m) high and seven mountains, defined as Corbetts. It has an area of 841 square miles (2,178 km2) – slightly under one per cent of the area of Great Britain. It is 24 miles (39 km) from the nearest point of the mainland, from which it is separated by the Minch. Lewis is comparatively flat, save in the south-east, where Ben More reaches 1,874 ft (571 m), and in the south-west, where Mealasbhal 1,885 ft (575 m) is the highest point. Lewis and Harris is the most populous of the Scottish islands, and had just over 20,500 residents in 2011, a rise of 5.6% from the 2001 census total of 19,918. The civil parish of Stornoway, including the main town of the island itself and various nearby villages, has a population of approximately 12,000.
