From the sky it appears to be an idyllic island with amazing beaches and a dense forest, but tourists or fishermen don’t dare to set foot on this outcrop in the Indian Ocean due to its inhabitants’ fearsome reputation.
Visitors who venture onto or too close to North Sentinel Island risk being attacked by members of a mysterious tribe who have rejected modern civilisation and prefer to have zero contact with the outside world.
When they do interact with outsiders, it usually involves violence – the indigenous Sentinelese tribe killed two men who were fishing illegally in 2006 and have been known to fire arrows and fling rocks at low-flying planes or helicopters on reconnaissance missions.
Located in the Bay of Bengal, North Sentinel Island belongs to India and remains an enigma, despite being populated for an estimated 60,000 years.
Untouched by modern civilisation, very little is known about the Sentinelese people, their language, their rituals and the island they call home.
It is too dangerous to approach them due to their hostility to outsiders, meaning they are rarely photographed up close and almost never seen on video. Most of the photos and video clips that do exist are of poor quality.
There are also conflicting reports on the tribe’s population, with most estimates putting it in the range of a few dozen to a few hundred.
It’s still unclear what impact the 2004 tsunami had on the population and the island, which is part of India’s chain of Andaman Islands, although the uncontacted tribe managed to avoid being wiped out. After the tsunami one member was photographed attempting to fire an arrow at an Indian Coast Guard helicopter
Often referred to as a ‘Stone Age tribe’ – a title that advocates take offence to, as its members have adapted over time – the Sentinelese may be the most isolated tribe in the world, with the Indian government choosing not to meddle in their affairs.
The government made several failed attempts to establish contact, but has abandoned all attempts and allows the tribe to live how it chooses on an island that is about the size of Manhattan.
Indian authorities have gone as far as making it a crime to try to make contact with the Sentinelese. It is illegal to go within three miles of the island.
While privileged people are eating £15 burgers and splashing £100 on new trainers, the near-naked Sentinelese are surviving off the land and hunting for sea creatures.
But the waters surrounding the island appear to be under threat by even more illegal fishermen.
Survival International reported late last year that it had received reports that fishermen are targeting the area, with seven men being apprehended by the Indian Coast Guard.
One of the fishermen reportedly stepped foot on the island in close proximity to the tribe’s members, and he managed to leave unscathed.
Survival International, which advocates for tribal peoples’ rights, describes the Sentinelese as ‘the most vulnerable society on the planet’ as they are likely to have no immunity to common diseases such as flu and measles.
Due to their complete isolation, the chances of them being wiped out by an epidemic are very high, according to the organisation.
In a statement, Survival International’s director, Stephen Corry, said: ‘The Great Andamanese tribes of India’s Andaman Islands were decimated by disease when the British colonised the islands in the 1800s.
‘The most recent to be pushed into extinction was the Bo tribe, whose last member died only four years ago. The only way the Andamanese authorities can prevent the annihilation of another tribe is to ensure North Sentinel Island is protected from outsiders.’
The organisation said the islanders are ‘extremely healthy, alert and thriving’, despite threats from the outside world and their 'old world' way of life.
Their hostility towards outsiders can at least be partially attributed to past conflicts. Survival International said 'the outside world has brought them little but violence and contempt'.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s several tribespeople were killed in battles with armed salvagers who visited the island to recover iron and other goods from a shipwreck.

Watch the full documentary film, Isolated Amazon Tribes: Xingu Indians Of The Amazon, shows you contact with the an isolated tribe along the Xingu River. You will see ceremonies such as the Yamurikuma, Quarup, and many more.
The Amazon Rainforest, also known in English as Amazonia or the Amazon Jungle, habitat to approximately one-third of all animal species in the world and isolated/uncontacted tribes such as the Xingu Peoples.
Xingu Peoples: Tribe Information
Xingu peoples are indigenous peoples of Brazil living near the Xingu River. They have many cultural similarities despite their different ethnologies. Xingu people represent fifteen tribes and all four of Brazil's indigenous language groups, but they share similar belief systems, rituals and ceremonies.
Precolumbian History
The Upper Xingu region was heavily populated prior to European and African contact. Densely populated settlements developed from 1200 to 1600 CE. Ancient roads and bridges linked communities were often surrounded by ditches or moats. The villages were pre-planned and featured circular plazas. Archaeologists have unearthed 19 villages so far.
Post contact history
Kuikuro oral history says European slavers arrived in the Xingu region around 1750. Xinuguano population was estimated in the tens of thousands but was dramatically reduced by diseases and slavery by Europeans. In the centuries since the penetration of the Europeans into South America, the Xingu fled from different regions to escape modernization and cultural assimilation. Nonetheless settlers made it up as far as the upper run of the Rio Xingu. By the end of the 19th century, about 3,000 natives lived at the Alto Xingu, where their current political status has kept them protected against European intruders. By the mid twentieth century this number had been reduced by foreign epidemic diseases such as flu, measles, smallpox and malaria to less than 1,000. Only an estimated 500 Xingu peoples were alive in the 1950s.
The Brazilian Villas-Bôas brothers visited the area beginning in 1946, and pushed for the creation of the Parque Indígena do Xingu, eventually established in 1961. Their story is told in a film, Xingu. The number of Xingu living there in 32 settlements has risen again to over 3000 inhabitants, half of them younger than 15 years.
The Xingu living in this region have similar habits and social systems, despite different languages. Specifically, they consist of the following peoples: the Aweti, Kalapalo, Kamaiurá, Kayapó, Kuikuro, Matipu, Mehinako, Nahukuá, Suyá, Trumai, Wauja and Yawalapiti.
Xingu River Description:
The Xingu River (Portuguese: Rio Xingu) is a 1,640 km (1,019 mi) river in north Brazil. It is a southeast tributary of the Amazon River.
The first Indian Park in Brazil was created in the river basin by the Brazilian government in the early 1960s. This park marks the first indigenous territory recognized by the Brazilian government and it was the world's largest indigenous reserve on the date of its creation. Currently, fourteen tribes live on the reserve surviving with natural resources and extracting from the river most of what they need for food and water.
The Brazilian government is building the Belo Monte Dam, which will be the world's third-largest hydroelectric dam, on the Lower Xingu. Construction of this dam is under legal challenge by environment and indigenous groups, who assert the dam would have negative environmental and social impacts along with reducing the flow by up to 80% along a 100 kilometres (62 mi) stretch known as the "Big Bend" (Volta Grande).
More than 450 fish species have been documented in the Xingu River Basin and it is estimated that the total is around 600 fish species, including many endemics. In the last 5 years alone, 21 new fish species have been described from the river. Many species are seriously threatened by the dam, including at least 26 fish species that are entirely restricted to the lower Xingu.

English/Nat
Across the United States, American Indian tribes are moving from a state of poverty to a state of comfort.
With new revenues from casinos and other business ventures, Indian communities are experiencing economic and cultural revitalisation.
But the Prairie Island Indian Community in the state of Minnesota fears all of its efforts may one day be wiped out because of a nuclear power plant less than 600 yards (metres) from their homes.
For centuries, these prairies were the home of the Mdewakanton (Mid-WA'-kan-ton) Sioux.
This land that borders the Mississippi and Vermilion Rivers is considered a spiritual place by the Mdewakantons...a land that has become known as Prairie Island.
But now, the tribe says, in this place they call home, their health and lives are at risk.
After a treaty with the U-S government in 1851, the Mdewakantons were forced to give up their land.
But over the years they have regained a small piece of it and today
534 acres are recognised by the government as the Prairie Island Indian Community.
Most of this century, the tribe was poverty stricken, without jobs, paved roads or indoor plumbing.
But in 1968 that was all supposed to change.
The State of Minnesota authorised the building of a nuclear power plant less than a half-mile (one kilometre) from reservation homes.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"They thought it was going to be something that would help the tribe and provide jobs. It didn't pan out that way."
SUPER CAPTION: Darryl Campbell, Tribal Secretary
Now the Prairie Island Community says it got more from the nuclear power plant than it ever bargained for.
The Mdewakantons say they've been plagued by disease and death.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I grew up in that home, there were cancer deaths in my family. There was a cancer death in this home, there was cancer detected in that home there, and a cancer death in that far home."
SUPER CAPTION: Audrey Kohnen, Tribal President
Audrey Kohnen is the President of the Prairie Island Community.
She says since the construction of the nuclear power plant, her tribal members have suffered from unexplained health problems, including an extraordinary high number of cancer deaths.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"It's just fearful. You're scared, you're anticipating, is something going to happen? You hope and pray that it doesn't."
SUPER CAPTION: Audrey Kohnen, Tribal President
A 1994 University of Pittsburgh study found that nuclear plants discharge small amounts of Strontium 90.
The study found higher incidents of breast cancer deaths in counties near the plants, and documented a 43 per cent increase in breast cancer deaths at Prairie Island between 1980 and 1989.
But the study could not prove that the plant was responsible.
State and utility officials have long expressed doubt about the data, showing a higher incidence of breast cancer.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We have plenty of evidence...there is no evidence that shows this facility is having any effect on the outside community."
SUPER CAPTION: Jon Kapitz, Project Manager, Northern States Power Company
And they say the government has evidence to back up that claim.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"A study has been done by the National Cancer Institutes, the National Institutes of Health, the Minnesota health department has done a study, and all of them have shown there is absolutely no effect on the communities."
SUPER CAPTION: Jon Kapitz, Project Manager, Northern States Power Company
Despite their struggle over the power plant, the Prairie Island community got a major economic boost in the mid-eighties when it opened the Treasure Island Casino.
There's now a waiting list for tribal members who want to return to their homeland.
