The history of Europe covers the peoples inhabiting the European continent from after prehistoric times to the present. Some of the best-known civilizations of prehistoric Europe were the Minoan and the Mycenaean, which flourished during the Bronze Age until they collapsed in a short period of time around 1200 BC.
The period known as classical antiquity began with the emergence of the city-states of Ancient Greece. After ultimately checking the Achaemenid Persian advance in Europe through the Greco-Persian Wars in the 5th century BC, Greek influence would later on happen to reach its zenith under the expansive empire of Alexander the Great, spreading throughout Asia, Africa, and other parts of Europe. The Roman Empire came to dominate the entire Mediterranean basin in a vast empire based on Roman law and Roman legions. It promoted trade, tolerance, and Greek culture. By 300 AD the Roman Empire was divided into the Western and Eastern empires. During the 4th and 5th centuries, the Germanic peoples of northern Europe grew in strength and repeated attacks led to the Fall of the Western Roman Empire in AD 476, a date which traditionally marks the end of the classical period and the start of the Middle Ages.
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
History (from Greek ἱστορία, historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation") is the study of the past, particularly how it relates to humans. It is an umbrella term that relates to past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of information about these events. Scholars who write about history are called historians. Events occurring prior to written record are considered prehistory.
History can also refer to the academic discipline which uses a narrative to examine and analyse a sequence of past events, and objectively determine the patterns of cause and effect that determine them. Historians sometimes debate the nature of history and its usefulness by discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing "perspective" on the problems of the present.
Stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the tales surrounding King Arthur), are usually classified as cultural heritage or legends, because they do not show the "disinterested investigation" required of the discipline of history.Herodotus, a 5th-century BC Greek historian is considered within the Western tradition to be the "father of history", and, along with his contemporary Thucydides, helped form the foundations for the modern study of human history. Their works continue to be read today, and the gap between the culture-focused Herodotus and the military-focused Thucydides remains a point of contention or approach in modern historical writing. In Asia, a state chronicle, the Spring and Autumn Annals was known to be compiled from as early as 722 BC although only 2nd century BC texts survived.

The Normans is a British television documentary series first aired on BBC Two in 2010. Over three episodes, it sees Professor Robert Bartlett's journey from Great Britain via Jerusalem to the Kingdom of Sicily to examine the expansion and ambition of the Normans between the 10th and 13th centuries.
In the first episode of an exciting three-part series, Professor Robert Bartlett explores how the Normans developed from a band of marauding Vikings into the formidable warriors who conquered England in 1066. He tells how the Normans established their new province of Normandy - land of the northmen - in northern France. They went on to build some of the finest churches in Europe and turned into an unstoppable force of Christian knights and warriors, whose legacy is all around us to this day. Under the leadership of Duke William, the Normans expanded into the neighbouring provinces of northern France. But William's greatest achievement was the conquest of England in 1066. The Battle of Hastings marked the end of the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy and monarchy. The culture and politics of England would now be transformed by the Normans.
Europe (i/ˈjʊərəp/ or /ˈjɜːrəp/) is a continent that comprises the westernmost part of Eurasia. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. To the east and southeast, Europe is generally considered as separated from Asia by the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas, and the waterways of the Turkish Straits. Yet the borders of Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are arbitrary, as the primarily physiographic term "continent" also incorporates cultural and political elements.
Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 countries, Russia is by far the largest by both area and population, taking up 40% of the continent (although the country has territory in both Europe and Asia), while Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 739–743 million or about 11% of the world's population. Europe has a climate heavily affected by warm Atlantic currents, tempering winters and enabling warm summers on most of the continent, even on latitudes that have severe climates in North America and Asia. Further from the Atlantic, seasonal differences increase, but the mildness of the climate remains.

Did this for a history project (Why else?) and decided to post it. It covers from the 100 year war to the 80s, focusing more on a general cause-and-event chain, rather than individual vocabulary words. It contains quite a few inside jokes from my class, as well as some frankly underwhelming singing, but you may find it helpful regardless.

This series is Written and Produced by Joseph Hogarty:Check out his site for more info and to support. This opening episode asks the foundational question of the whole series: “Where did Europe come from?” The question itself historicizes the continent and its civilisation … Europe didn’t always exist, but it germinated within, and over a long period grew out of, a prior cultural realm – the Mediterranean world of Antiquity. Here we examine the period AD 300-390: The Roman Empire before Christianity, together with some brief impressions of what earliest Christianity was like and how it melded and itself was transformed, as it transformed the culture of the Roman Empire, that is, the ancient Mediterranean and the Near East. - See more at: http://www.europefromitsorigins.com/downloads/episod...
This is an old six part series made by BBC and aired on the history channel in 1991 or 1992, narrated by Jack Perkins. We only have the first two episodes, the rest was lost in a fire. If anyone knows where we can get the rest (preferably with Jack Perkins narrating) please comment or best if you have it please upload and leave a link in comments. Thanks ever so much! Yes we know it was remade in 2012 but we prefer the original.
Finally! Enjoy! And before you comment, yes, I know that Austria wasn't part of the Warsaw pact during the cold war. Also, NAPOLEON IS IN THIS.

Wherever their ships took them, the Normans (Northman) were ruthless conquerors but gifted governors. These eight lectures, given in Boston in 1915 by the eminent Harvard medievalist, Charles Homer Haskins, chronicle the achievements of these descendants of the Vikings, whose genius for assimilation transformed them into French, English, and Sicilian citizens of well-run states. Haskins discusses the great William the Conqueror and Henry II, the impetuous Richard the Lion-Hearted, and the hapless King John. The Normans founded the Kingdom of Sicily in which there was religious toleration and a Saracen bureaucracy, and left us a moving picture of themselves in the Bayeux Tapestry. The facts of European history have been put together in this audio book. The chapters are named primarily after an event that may have been the most prominent one during a period, but every chapter will cover more than just that event. It will cover the things that led to the event and the ones after the event as well. Every era had some striking events that changed the way Europeans led their lives. From periods of anarchy to golden rules and back to chaos again, Europe, from the time it has known power and politics, has been controlled and ruled by many powerful people. -Video Upload powered by https://www.TunesToTube.com

People find something amazing in Britain. They find very old human footprints. The footprints are very special. They are the oldest footprints in Europe. Older footprints are only in Africa. Scientists take pictures of the footprints. They use the pictures to make a model. There’s a conference in London. The pictures and the model are shown there. Most of the footprints are children’s. This is a great discovery. It gives us new information. We will understand history better. Difficult words: amazing (rare and special), footprint (picture of a human foot in the ground), scientist (clever person who is an expert in something), model (small object that shows what something looks like), discovery (something which is found). The oldest human footprints in Europe have been discovered in Britain...

(Visit: http://www.uctv.tv/) Johannes Krause (Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History) and his research team analyzed more than 200 ancient human genomes spanning the last 10,000 years of Western Eurasian pre-history. They found direct evidence for two major genetic turnover events at the beginning and at the end of the Neolithic time period in Europe, which they attribute to two major migrations. This explains why all modern European populations are a genetic mixture of steppe pastoralist, early farmers and indigenous European hunter-gatherers in varying proportion. This genetic mixture together with local biological adaptation has led to major changes in human phenotypes such as eye color, skin color, and the ability to digest milk sugar over the past 10,000 years. The Renaissance is a period in Europe, from the 14th to the 17th century, considered the bridge between the Middle Ages and modern history. It started as a cultural movement in Italy in the Late Medieval period and later spread to the rest of Europe, marking the beginning of the Early Modern Age.
Last 5 minutes or so got cut off, but since it was mostly complete, I decided to upload it. I may break it into two parts later on.
In this video, Dr Matthew Vester discusses the political unit of the family in early modern Europe from the Renaissance to the 18th century. He also talks about the how families gained power and captial, as well as the conditions of reproduction and marriage during the period.
