The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (also known as the IUCN Red List or Red Data List), founded in 1964, is the world's most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of biological species. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is the world's main authority on the conservation status of species. A series of Regional Red Lists are produced by countries or organizations, which assess the risk of extinction to species within a political management unit.
The IUCN Red List is set upon precise criteria to evaluate the extinction risk of thousands of species and subspecies. These criteria are relevant to all species and all regions of the world. The aim is to convey the urgency of conservation issues to the public and policy makers, as well as help the international community to try to reduce species extinction. According to IUCN (1996), the formally stated goals of the Red List are (1) to provide scientifically based information on the status of species and subspecies at a global level, (2) to draw attention to the magnitude and importance of threatened biodiversity, (3) to influence national and international policy and decision-making, and (4) to provide information to guide actions to conserve biological diversity.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) is an international organization working in the field of nature conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. It is involved in data gathering and analysis, research, field projects, advocacy, lobbying and education. IUCN's mission is to "influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable."
Over the past decades, IUCN has widened its focus beyond conservation ecology and now incorporates issues related to gender equality, poverty alleviation and sustainable business in its projects. Unlike other international NGOs, IUCN does not itself aim to mobilize the public in support of nature conservation. It tries to influence the actions of governments, business and other stakeholders by providing information and advice, and through lobbying and partnerships. The organization is best known to the wider public for compiling and publishing the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, which assesses the conservation status of species worldwide.

The IUCN Red List is the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of wild species and their links to livelihoods. Far more than a list of species and their status, it is a powerful tool to inform and catalyse action for biodiversity conservation, critical to protecting the natural resources we need to survive. Help us reach our goal of assessing at least 160,000 species by 2020 to make The IUCN Red List a more complete ‘Barometer of Life’. https://50.iucnredlist.org/donate
Come, be part of the action. Register today: www.iucnworldconservationcongress.org Humanity has always been bound to nature. We may forget, but nature always reminds us. Our current path must change. Last year the world agreed to combat climate change and develop more sustainably. But how can we build this new relationship with our planet? And who will lead the way? This September in Hawaiʻi, top government officials, CEOs and civil society leaders will come together with leading scientists and experts from the field to define the path to a sustainable future. Join them in moving global climate and sustainable development agreements into action. Our planet is at a crossroads. Now is the time to act.

GLAND, SWITZERLAND — The world’s tallest creature is slowly veering closer to being wiped out. The The International Union for Conservation of Nature has updated its Red List of Threatened Species, and among a number of birds and crops, the majestic giraffe now finds itself in serious trouble. With its population declining by roughly 40 percent over the past three decades, the giraffe has since been raised two categories from Least Concern to Vulnerable. The reason for the giraffe’s demise is correlated with the growth of human populations. Illegal hunting has also escalated – poachers use traps and rifles to kill giraffes for their meat, and some hunters still target them as trophies. With Habitat loss also contributing to their decreasing numbers in the wild, two decades from now gir...
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ is widely recognized as the most comprehensive, objective global approach for evaluating the conservation status of plants, animals and fungi. The IUCN Red List includes a wealth of information which is used to identify the pressures that are pushing species towards extinction across the world. Press conference for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species update held at the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2016 in Honolulu, Hawaii
http://www.iucnworldconservationcongress.org/ Ecosystem collapse, climate change and species extinction are all happening on our watch. The IUCN World Conservation Congress 2016 in Hawaii will bring the world together to move forward on global agreements to address these issues.
Created in 1948, The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a membership Union uniquely composed of both government and civil society organizations. It provides public, private and non-governmental organizations with the knowledge and tools that enable human progress, economic development and nature conservation to take place together. Earlier this year tour host Steph Arne became a member of the Communication and Education Commission (CEC) for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and fortunately, she and Tim were able to attend the organization’s World Congress held every four years in Honolulu, Hawai’i. It was such an honor to be apart of of such an important event where world leaders, conservation organizations, law-makers, educators, scientists a...

The rare Pygmy Elephants of Borneo have numbers around a mere 2000, and are listed by the IUCN (international union for conservation and nature) as an endangered species. Compare this to the African Elephant, who's numbers fall in the hundreds of thousands. With numbers like these, the future of Borneo Pygmy Elephant is still quite grim. Like most endangered species, the blame lies with human habitation, and also a thirst for exotic timbers. Although area's of protected forest such as the Danum Valley Conservation Area, and the Maliau Basin, are helping the plight of these magnificent creatures. The logging we witnessed on the way into the protected area was quite aggressive. All you have to do is look at the photo's of the logs aboard the trucks in this post to see that even the monster ...

Waking to the silence in your voice
Waking to the light, I'll now rejoice
Knowing everything could come undone
And knowing that you and I will be one
This day is dragging on, why don't you die?
The nights are carried on by blackened sky
Forever has no end but has a start
Forever your love
Will not fall apart
I know that your love
Will not fall apart
So I'll wake
For the end is crashing through
Seconds pass
In an hour
(Oh) I know I'll go
So please don't take me now
I need to note
Something that's told.
You stood by (Watching)
Because I cannot sleep (Please wake)
Just to say (I'm told)
Sorry I'm told
You stood by (Watching)
Because I cannot sleep (Please wake)
Is this to say (I'm told)
I am told.
Waking to the silence in your voice
