The skin is the largest organ of the human body, weighing approximately 16% of our bodyweight. Skin consists of multiple layers, epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. Produced by Clinuvel http://www.clinuvel.com
Human skin has numerous functions, it is the major interface between the environment and the human organs and so it serves many specialised functions that facilitate survival.
It regulates body temperature to protect against hyperthermia and hypothermia. Skin protects from the invasion of noxious substances, UV light, heat and micro-organisms.
The skin is also the most extensive sensory organ of the body for detection of tactile, thermal and painful stimuli and is where vitamin D production begins

There are two main layers of the skin: Epidermis and Dermis
Underneath the skin is a layer of subcutaneous fat, the hypodermis.
Basement membrane zone
Skin is normally under tension
The Epidermis
A keratinised stratified squamous epithelium.
Consists of 4 or 5 layers each containing different cells at different stages.
Cells are produced in the germinating layer and move up through the other layers to the surface, 4-8 weeks.
Keratinocytes secrete a variety of lipids, including dehydrocholesterol
Cells on the surface contain keratin.
Keratin is a waxy then hard, water repellent, protein like substance which helps to protect the skin.
Varies in thickness, thickest on soles of feet and palms of hand and thinnest on lips and eyelids.
No blood vessels, only light tough sensory nerve endings.
Deep layers are bathed in tissue fluid to provide nutrients and oxygen which is drained as lymph.
10% of keratinocytes are stem cells
Cell types
Keratinocytes
Melanocytes with dendrites
Dendritic (Langerhans) cells
Merkel cells and discs
Epidermal strata
Stratum basale (base)
One layer thick
Cuboidal / columnar
Germinative with stem cells
Mitosis rate increased by superficial injury, epidermal growth factor
Tonofilaments will be later converted in to keratin
Desmosomes connect cell to cell
Stratum spinosum (spiny, thorn like)
Closely packed keratinocytes, 8-10 layers thick
Tonofilaments will be later converted in to keratin
Desmosomes connect cell to cell
Dendritic cells
Stratum granulosum (little grains)
Flattened cells undergoing apaptosis, first dead layer
3-5 layers thick
Tonofilaments converted in to keratin by granules of keratohyalin
Lamellar granules secret lipids, waterproofing, eg. burns, swimming
Dehydrocholesterol
Stratum lucidum (in thick skin)
Fingertips, palms and soles
3-5 layers thick, flattened dead cells
Stratum corneum (horny)
25 -- 30 layers
Dead cells, mostly keratin
Intercellular lipid preserved
Pressure leads to callus of this layer
Shed cells form dust

Hair has a characteristic sexual distribution in humans varying between males and females. The purpose of hair on the head is probably to protect the head and the body against direct sunlight. Hair also increases the sensitivity of the skin to touch. There is also some social aesthetic function, especially in females. Hair follicles house the hairs and are fairly deep structures that go down into the dermis. The hair follicles are lined with an infolding of the epidermis. Sebaceous glands produce sebum and deposit this product in the hair follicles, this greasy substance helps keeps the skin supple and waterproof.
Ceruminous glands produce cerumen which is a waxy substance, they are located in the skin of the external auditory meatus, (outer ear passage). Sweat glands produce sweat from plasma, sweat produced in a sweat gland rises to the surface of the epidermis in the sweat gland duct, depositing sweat on the body surface where it aids in cooling. Sensory receptors are found in the dermis and allow for tactile sensation to be experienced. There are four main types of peripheral sensory receptors each with a specialised function for the detection of pain, pressure, temperature and touch. There is a separate type of receptor for each sensation.
There are a lot of capillary beds in the skin, these are supplied with blood from an arteriole and the blood is drained from capillary beds by a venule. It is the perfusion of these capillary beds with blood which give the skin its characteristic pink/rosy colour in white people. Fibroblasts found in the dermis produce collagen for strength and yellow elastic fibres for elasticity.

SKIN SONG
The skin has three layers
Epidermis you do see
Outside stratum corneum
is dead as it can be
The stratum basale
is the layer that divides
The cells move away from blood
become keratinized
tough...waterproof...then they flake off
Deep in epidermis
pigment is called melanin
It is the reason
why there's color in your skin
It helps absorb the light rays
and protects from sunlight
Stratified squamous
make the epidermis right
five layers...real thick
The dermis is below
with lots of blood vessels you'll see
It helps to control
temperature of the body
Sudoriferous glands,
coiled eccrine produce sweat
After puberty,
apocrine smell you bet
In the groin...armpits
Epidermal cells divide
make hair in follicle
Hair stands up, it's goose bumps
arrector pili muscle
Hair grows from the root
and the shaft is what you see
Sebaceous glands keep hair/skin soft
Sebum is oily
Makes it pliable...waterproof too
Nails are a part of skin
protect the digits well
Stratified squamous
keratinized epithelial cells
Also in the dermis,
neurons motor and sensory
For touch, temperature, pressure, pain,
work effectively
General senses...two t's two p's
Fibrous connective dermis
below subcutaneous
Where there are major blood
vessels-hypodermis
Mostly made of adipose
cushions and insulates
The integumentary system,
now ain't it great
You all learn about the skin now ya hear

Here is a song I created to help my 6th grade students study. I hope you enjoy.
Skin is more than a typical kind of thing
Protects us against damage and from infection, oh oh
Removes waste, collects info
Two main layers-outer, inner, then subcutaneous
Epidermis is the outer, filled with keratin, oh oh
Dermis has the receptors
Dermis, blood cells, and then the other structures
Touch receptors, Meissner's corpuscles
Sweat glands, hair muscles, hair plexuses
Pacinian corpuscles and pain receptors
Oh oh, brain interprets the impulse
The integumentary
Skin has different layers
Covers body will protect it
Largest organ in your body that's right
Come on, that's right
Nails will grow from a root
Are made of keratin too
Hair grows out of pits, follicles
Melanin colors them darkness to light
Come on, that's right, covers you
Here's the deal, touch and feel
Nails forming firm pads
To support fingertips, made of keratin, oh oh
Cuticle is the thick skin
Oh yeah
Hair grows out, of deep pits they're called follicles
At the base of each hair divide push hair up, oh oh
Cutting hair it will not hurt, no no
The integumentary
Skin has different layers
Covers body will protect it
Largest organ in your body that's right
Come on, that's right
Nails will grow from a root
Are made of keratin too
Hair grows out of pits, follicles
Melanin colors them darkness to light
Come on, that's right, covers you
Skin producing melanin, brown substance in you
Absorbing UV rays, Sun blocking hue
Epidermis holds the key color on the base
Fair skinned it is then, melanin colors skin
Dark kinda skin large amounts usually
Melanin goin' all through it, truthfully
Dark hair will have it, fair mixed with sulfur, melanin
The integumentary
Skin has different layers
Covers body will protect it
Largest organ in your body that's right
Come on, that's right
Nails will grow from a root
Are made of keratin too
Hair grows out of pits, follicles
Melanin colors them darkness to light
Come on, that's right, covers, covers, covers you
We're talkin' 'bout the skin
Largest organ in the body
Skin, hair and the nails
Integumentary system, oh oh
Helps you learn about this so
Come on, that's right, covers you, uh!

Parody of "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys. The song is a lower pitched recording of our voices because it just sounded weird higher pitched :P Not the best video, but it worked for the time we had :D
"In the Epidermis" Lyrics
Skin
Integumentary
Is what, protects me
insulates me and
keeps organs in my body
And first, is hair shafts
they grow, from follicles
Arrector Pili Muscles
Pull the hair when youre cold
Tell me why
Doesnt matter if youre black or white
Tell me why
We all have melanocytes
Tell me why
They are in the epidermis
The topmost layer
Stratified squamous cells
Make up your epidermis
Yes I know, it's too late
Since the cells are dead anyway
Tell me why
Doesnt matter if youre black or white
Tell me why
We all have melanocytes
Tell me why
They are in the epidermis
The topmost layer
Now I can see that we've reached the dermis
Its composed of two layers, papillae and
Reticular layer
has so many things
Now well describe them to you
Papillary
Fingerprints and
Meissners Corpuscles (feel touch)
Feel pain, feel pain, feel pain, feel pain (by free nerves)
But thats not all!!!
Collagen and elastin
Are in the reticular layer
Pacinian Corpuscles
Feel pressure when youre pinched
Dont forget
Nerves help us feel the world
Arteries
Take the blood to the skin
And the veins
Take the blood to the heart
Still in the reticular
And our sweat
Comes from the sudoriferous
So you smell too
Sebaceous glands makes skin oily
Were at the
last layer of the skin
It is hypodermis
Made of those fat cells

1) Can aging be slowed by using gene therapy to make permanent changes to a person’s DNA?
Elizabeth Parrish, the 44-year-old CEO of an American biotechnology startup called BioViva, says she underwent a gene therapy to reverse aging at an undisclosed location overseas last month, a first step in what she says is a plan to develop treatments for ravages of old age like Alzheimer’s and muscle loss. The medical procedure took place on September 15 in Colombia. She Is the patient Zero.
Her claims appear to raise the possibility of a market in overseas medical tourism for unproven genetic therapies. Gene-therapy preparations, which use a virus to shuttle DNA into human cells, could prove risky. But the technology has advanced so far in the last decade that it is within reach of a small company.
2) The group of Stanford engineers, led by Benjamin Tee, might have made a breakthrough that could change the lives of people with missing limbs. Researchers have developed an artificial substitute for skin that is capable of sensing when it is being touched and sending that data to the nervous system.
The artificial skin is made of a clear plastic with a fingerprint-sized sensor embedded into it. The sensor is made of flexible, organic materials, and the “skin” takes in information based on the amount of force applied to the circuit before translating it into digital signals.
3) It takes skill to fall with grace. Not in a metaphorical sense, but in a very real one: emerging relatively unharmed after a tumble is a skill human have and can refine that robots lack innately, often to comical effect. New research by Georgia Tech wants to protect expensive, wobbly robots of the future, by programming them to fall safely and gracefully. In order to test this, first they needed to shove over a bunch of robots.
To compensate falling, scientists at Gergia Tech created a planning algorithm that lets robots break various kinds of falls, including using arms to protect their head and tumbling sideways to minimize the damage. Their paper, “Multiple Contact Planning for Minimizing Damage of Humanoid Falls”, presented at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems, details a system that lets robots survive a range of impacts.
4) Military researchers are putting the final touches on a study of a "skin substitute" grown from a patient's own cells to treat complex burns and soft tissue injuries. The new research study underway at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research in San Antonio holds promise for treating burn patients, including those with severe, life-threatening wounds. The treatment, called "engineered skin substitute," or ESS, combines tissue cultivated from a patient’s skin along with collagen-producing cells to replace the two top components of skin, the epidermis and dermis.
Skin autografts — using an individual’s own cells or skin to replace damaged tissue — have been around for years, but the technology for rapidly growing replacement skin to use in large-scale burn replacement has lagged.
5) Aerospace Boeing has invented the lightest metal ever, called microlattice and it's lighter than Styrofoam. It’s sort of like a feather - it floats down, and its terminal velocity depends on the density. The product is 99.99 per cent air and will be used as a primary component in aerospace engineering - it'll be used to make space rockets.
By utilizing microlattice, Boeing could find ways to cut down on the weight of its jets and save substantially on fuel costs. It's an important invention, because although it is lighter than foam, as it is made of metal it is very strong.

Collagen Induction Therapy Exclusively at Urban Retreat FL
Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) is the only skin rejuvenation treatment to target and regulate 3 key skin cells (keratinocyte, melanocyte and fibroblast) without compromising the integrity of the epidermis. CIT builds up the connective tissue in the lower skin layers (dermal layers) while keeping intact the protective layers of the skin (epidermal layers).

Structure of the skin
The skin is in two layers. Lining the outer skin surface is the epidermis with the dermis forming the layer below. The Epidermis is keratinised, stratified and is a squamous epithelium. Epidermal skin cells reproduce in the mitotic, or germinative, layer at the bottom of the epidermis and are gradually pushed upwards as new cell division takes place. The epidermis varies in thickness depending partly on the wear and tear the particular part of the body is exposed to. There are no blood or lymphatic vessels in the epidermis. Deeper layers of the epidermis are bathed in tissue fluid which keeps the cells alive but as the cells are pushed away from the mitotic layer they start to die. Epidermis also contains some melanocytes; these produce the dark coloured pigment melanin in response to exposure to sunlight.
The dermis contains loose connective tissue containing collagen with some yellow elastic fibres. It contains blood vessels, capillaries, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, hair follicles, hair erector muscles and peripheral sensory receptors; it also contains some lymphatic vessels.

http://ibioseminars.hhmi.org/lectures/cell-bio-a-med/elaine-fuchs.html
During embryogenesis, a single fertilized oocyte gives rise to a multicellular organism whose cells and tissues have adopted differentiated characteristics or fates to perform the specified functions of each organ of the body. As embryos develop, cells that have acquired their particular fate proliferate, enabling tissues and organs to grow. Even after an animal is fully grown, however, many tissues and organs maintain a process known as homeostasis, where as cells die, either by natural death or by injury, they are replenished. This remarkable feature has ancient origins, dating back to the most primitive animals, such as sponges and hydrozoans. The fabulous ability of an embryo to diversify and of certain adult tissues to regenerate throughout life is a direct result of stem cells, nature's gift to multicellular organisms.
Stem cells have both the capacity to self-renew, that is, to divide and create additional stem cells, and also to differentiate along a specified molecular pathway. Embryonic stem cells are very nearly totipotent, reserving the elite privileges of choosing among most if not all of the differentiation pathways that specify the animal. In contrast, stem cells that reside within an adult organ or tissue have more restricted options, often able to select a differentiation program from only a few possible pathways, which still can make them valuable for tissue regeneration in a clinical setting. Long-standing examples of such successes include bone marrow transplants in immune disorders, including cancers, and skin culture grafts to replace epidermis damaged from burns.
My laboratory studies the stem cells of the skin that can make epidermis, sebaceous glands and hair follicles. Although only the thickness of cellophane, the epidermis of the skin is responsible for providing protection against harmful microbes and for preventing the evaporation of our essential body fluids. Being at the skin surface, epidermal cells are constantly exposed to wear and tear. Yet they keep regenerating, due to a supply of active stem cells, which create a new epidermis every 4 weeks throughout the course of a lifetime. Skin stem cells also account for why our hairs fall out but regrow, and why our body surface is lubricated with fresh oils and sweat. In this lecture, I discuss the differences between embryonic and adult stem cells, the controversies involved, and their potential for regenerative medicine. Using skin as a model system, I explore the fascinating features of adult stem cells, how they choose among different lineages and how they repair tissues damaged during injury. See more at http://www.ibioseminars.org

Close supervision by highly-trained medical staff.
Services are designed and monitored by licensed medical professionals. The director is a skilled, personable, physician known for honest, open relationships with his patients.
Type of Skincare treatment I received: Pixel
Pixel skin resurfacing is based on the principle of micro-thermal treatment zones. The laser pulses create tiny holes in the skin, removing the epidermis and upper dermis. The treatment then triggers the body’s natural healing process; stimulating the growth of new, healthy skin tissue from the edges of the microscopic hole.
The Pixel treats small zones of the skin, leaving surrounding tissue untouched and intact. These large unaffected areas act as a reservoir for moreW0Jeffective and rapid tissue healing and collagen production. The end result: new, healthier, smoother tissue in place of skin imperfections.

Radio Frequency Wrinkle Treatments are FDA Approved as a non-surgical wrinkle treatment- also known as the "non-surgical facelift"
Triple Benefits
Radio frequency therapy works in three different ways:
Thermal Energy. The main component of the treatment is thermal energy, which is delivered deep into the dermal layer of the skin. This assists in the healing of skin by tightening the skin, promoting collagen production thus wrinkle reduction, as well as increasing oxygen and nutrients availability which supports the natural regenerative processes.
Stimulation. The microcurrent also provides massage-like stimulation to the surface of the skin. This helps to keep the epidermis healthy. Massage encourages blood flow to the surface of the skin, giving your skin that youthful "glow.”
Enriched Oxygen. The treatment also involves the emission of enriched oxygen, a natural cleanser. This part of the therapy counters the effects of pollution, and helps reduce the appearance of enlarged pores. This results in a smoother, evenly textured skin surface.
Radiofrequency Facelift provides a non-invasive, safe and painless option to improve the youthfulness of your skin. A clinical study of this wrinkle reduction system evidenced significant wrinkle reduction in over 80% of treated patients. This reduction was shown three months after the treatment ended, suggesting long-lasting results, with immediate improvement.

Discover what causes your skin to age and learn how to keep it young. - In order to understand how we visibly age, we must first understand our skin's anatomy. The outer layer of the skin is the epidermis, which contains elastin. Elastin helps your skin quickly recover its shape. Over time, damage from the sun, harsh soaps, or cigarette smoke reduces elastin, causing wrinkles, age spots, and skin cracks. Watch this video to find out the full truth behind aging skin!
With each passing year, our bodies slowly age. View the ageing skin video to learn more.
