Dr. Jeff Marliave has been studying the marine life in Howe Sound for over a third of a century. He has monitored prawn nurseries and glass sponge growth as indicators of environmental quality as well as conducted surveys to assist in the establishment of Rockfish Conservation Areas in Howe Sound. Dr. Marliave has produced over 85 scientific and technical publications.
Jessica Schultz is the Research Coordinator for the Howe Sound Research Program at the Vancouver Aquarium. Jessica completed an Honours Degree in Marine Biology at the University of British Columbia in 2012. Jessica has worked on a variety of scientific diving projects, including monitoring glass sponge reefs, fish and invertebrate population monitoring, kelp forest ecology, and sedimentation on coral reefs. Jessica’s research experience has also included investigating the impacts of climate change on intertidal organisms, and analyzing Canadian fish conservation and management policy.
Donna Gibbs is a Research Diver/Taxonomist for the Howe Sound Research Program at the Vancouver Aquarium. Donna has been working at the Vancouver Aquarium since 1992 as an educator and aquarist. Her expertise is in marine taxonomy and her experience with local species is extensive. Donna has logged over 2,300 cold water research dives and has been diving for the Aquarium’s Howe Sound Research Program for 17 years. She has contributed to 7 scientific journal articles, and also played an integral role in producing the well-known book, Marine Life of the Pacific Northwest.

Littoral zone
The littoral zone is the part of a sea, lake or river that is close to the shore. In coastal environments the littoral zone extends from the high water mark, which is rarely inundated, to shoreline areas that are permanently submerged. It always includes this intertidal zone and is often used to mean the same as the intertidal zone. However, the meaning of "littoral zone" can extend well beyond the intertidal zone.
There is no single definition. What is regarded as the full extent of the littoral zone, and the way the littoral zone is divided into subregions, varies in different contexts (lakes and rivers have their own definitions). The use of the term also varies from one part of the world to another, and between different disciplines. For example, military commanders speak of the littoral in ways that are quite different from marine biologists.
The adjacency of water gives a number of distinctive characteristics to littoral regions. The erosive power of water results in particular types of landforms, such as sand dunes, and estuaries. The natural movement of the littoral along the coast is called the littoral drift. Biologically, the ready availability of water enables a greater variety of plant and animal life, and particularly the formation of extensive wetlands. In addition, the additional local humidity due to evaporation usually creates a microclimate supporting unique types of organisms.

Howe Sound
Howe Sound is a roughly triangular sound, actually a network of fjords situated immediately northwest of Vancouver.
Geography
Howe Sound's mouth at the Strait of Georgia is situated between West Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast. The sound is triangular shaped, open on its southeast towards the Strait of Georgia, and extends 42 kilometres to its head at Squamish. There are several islands in the sound, three of which are large and mountainous in their own right. The steep-sided mainland shores funnel the breezes as the daily thermals build the wind to 20 knots plus at the northern end of the sound on a typical summer day. A small outcrop of volcanic rock is located on the eastern shore of Howe Sound called the Watts Point volcanic centre.
History
The history of Howe Sound begins with the Indigenous people, the Squamish and Shishalh, who roamed this land and traveled on this body of water for thousands of years, had village sites and camp sites spread throughout the area. The land and islands are still used by Squamish and Shishalh for cultural practices. Both the Squamish and Shishalh are a part of the Coast Salish linguistic and cultural groupings.
Spanish explorers observed the sound in 1791 and named it Boca del Carmelo. Captain George Vancouver entered the sound in 1792, and named it after Admiral Earl Howe.
