Vaxfacts: Lou Richards (March 15, 1923 – May 8, 2017) was an Australian football legend, having played 250 games for his beloved Collingwood Football Club (The Magpies), captaining it to a Premiership in 1953. Lou Richards, with his flamboyant personality, became one of the pioneering media figures in Australian football, with his popularity due to media commitments in newspapers and television. Richards' television career featured many popular programs, including the Channel Seven shows 'League Teams' (with the late Bob Davis and Jack Dyer) in the 1960s, and 'World of Sport' (1959-1987), and the Channel Nine 'The Footy Show' and 'Sunday Footy Show' in the 1990s and 2000s. Richards was also the 'Kiss of Death' tipster in the Melbourne newspaper 'The Sun'. Lou Richards, one of the most iconic Australian football players, has been proposed for many years to be inducted to 'Legend' status in the Australian Football League Hall of Fame. His exclusion from this honour has been attributed by many due to the fact that his media career has far outshone his playing career, and thus as a former player does not meet the criteria to qualify. Lou Richards, a Collingwood player for life (Richards himself was born in the directly neighbouring suburb of Abbotsford) was the grandson of Collingwood player Charlie Pannam, and the nephew of Charles and Alby Pannam, also Collingwood players. With his family deeply entrenched in the Collingwood Football Club, it is an amazing quirk of fate that he died exactly one day (May 8, 2017) after the 125th Anniversary of the Collingwood Football Club's first match (May 7, 2017).
