LINGARAJA TEMPLE AT BHUBANESWAR, ODISHA.

The biggest and finest temple of Odisha is the Lingaraja Temple. The temple is dedicated to Lord Siva. The Lingam here is unique in that it is a hari hara lingam-half Siva and half Vishnu. There are 150 shrines within the immense Lingaraja complex and many of them extremely interesting in their own right. This is exemplified by the fact, that the presiding deity, here, is the Svayambhu Linga - half Shiva, half Vishnu, a unique feature of the temple. Almost all the Hindu gods and goddesses are represented in this temple, mirroring the inherent element of harmony within the religion. Surrounded by high walls on four sides, the Lingaraja temple is one of the most famous temples in Bhubaneswar,Odisha. It is one of the best and splendid examples of the architectural excellence which the artists had attained during 11th century. This temple is also known as the Bhubaneswar temple. The outer walls of the temple exhibit exemplary carvings. The beautifully sculpted images of various God and Goddess are unmatched. The temple tower can be seen from a long distance. The temple complex has three parts and each part has one temple each. Towards south of the entrance to main temple is image of Lord Ganesha, at the back is the image of Goddess Parvati and to north is Lord Kartikya.
HISTORY
Lingaraja temple was built in 617-657 AD and its height is about 54 meters. The Lingaraja temple is said to have been built first by the ruler Yayati Kesari in the 7th century who shifted his capital from Jaipur to Bhubaneshwar. Bhubaneswar remained as the Kesari capital, till Nripati Kesari founded Cuttack in the 10th century. Inscriptions from the period of the Kalinga King Anangabhima III from the 13th century are seen here. Structurally, the Parasurameswara temple at Bhubaneswar is the oldest, dating back to the middle of the 8th century, and the Lingaraja is temple is assigned to the 10th century. The nata mandir and the bhog mandir of the Lingaraja temple are of later origin
ARCHITECTURE
The outer walls of the temple exhibit unparallel carvings. The beautifully carved and sculpted images of various God and Goddess are unrivalled. Its towering spire-like beauty dominates the Bhubaneswar skyline. It represents the peak of Kalinga style of architecture spanning over 25 centuries of progressive history. This 11th century temple is the culmination of architectural beauty and sculpted elegance.
THE LEGEND
Legend has it that Shiva revealed to Parvati that Bhubaneswar - or Ekamra thirtha was a resort favored by him over Benares. Parvati in the guise of a cowherd woman, decided to look at the city herself. Two demons Kritti and Vasa desired to marry her. She requested them to carry her upon their shoulders, and crushed them under her weight. Shiva, then created the Bindu Saras lake to quench her thirst, and took abode here as Krittivasas or Lingaraja.

Fortunately, we weren't going to visit all of Bhubaneswar's remaining temples. Just the creme de la creme, dating from the 8th, 9th, 10th centuries ending at the Lingaraj Temple where non-Hindus are not allowed to enter. The entire Temple is surrounded by a gate to keep out non-believers.
There is a viewing platform to gawk at this huge temple surrounded by 50 smaller temples and shrines. Parts date over 1,400 years and we were almost templed out by now...

SHIVA RATRI AND LINGARAJ TEMPLE,BHUBANESWAR,ODISHA.
Jagara or Shiva Ratri or the night of Shiva is a festival held in honour of the God. In Shiva Purana, Shiva says to Her consort Parvati that no festival other than Shiva Ratri observed by his devotees gives Him so much pleasure and satisfaction. The festival "Shiva's Great Night" falls on the 14th day of the dark half of Phalgun and is observed by devotees all over the country. The earliest temlpes of Lord Shiva dates back to 6th-7th century A.D. Since then Shaivism is a great religious force among the people of Orissa. The festival is held with great religious fervor in the State. Devotees keep fast and perform puja throughout the night and keep a vigil to witness the sacred lamp on the temple top.
The festival can be best enjoyed at Lingaraj Temple- Bhubaneswar, Mahendragiri, Gupteswar, Kapilas, Puri, and Khiching.
Hymns in praise of Lord Shiva are sung with great fervor and devotion. People repeat the Panchakshara Mantra, Om Namah Shivaya. It is believed that one who utters the name of Shiva during Shivratri with proper devotion is freed from all sins. He reaches the abode of Shiva and lives happily there. He is liberated from the cycle of birth and death. Many pilgrims flock to the places where there are Shiva temples.
Shiva being an ascetic god, Maha Shivratri is very popular with ascetics. Thandai, a drink made with cannabis, almonds, and milk, is essentially drunk by the devout. This is so because cannabis is said to have been very dear to Shiva. The Puranas contain many stories and legends describing the origin of this festival.
According to one, during the Samudra Manthan, a pot of poison emerged from the ocean. This terrified the gods and demons as the poison was capable of destroying the entire world, and they ran to Shiva for help. To protect the world from its evil effects, Shiva drank the deadly poison but held it in his throat instead of swallowing it. Because of it, his throat turned blue, and he was given the name Nilkantha, the blue-throated one.
