The Anglo-Scottish border has a long tradition of balladry, such that a whole group of songs exists that are often called "border ballads", because they were collected in that region.
Border ballads, like all traditional ballads, were traditionally sung unaccompanied. There may be a repeating motif, but there is no "chorus" as in most popular songs. The supernatural is a common theme in Border ballads, as are recountings of raids and battles.
The ballads belong to various groups of subjects - such as riding ballads like Kinmont Willie, historical ballads like Sir Patrick Spens, and comic ballads like Get Up and Bar the Door
Representative samples include "Thomas the Rhymer" (aka "True Thomas", "Thomas of Erceldoune"), which opens in the Scottish town of Erceldoune (modern Earlston, Berwickshire); and the very famous "Tam Lin".
Sir Walter Scott wrote about border ballads in Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border - which was first published in 1802-3.
Border reivers were raiders along the Anglo-Scottish border from the late 13th century to the beginning of the 17th century. Their ranks consisted of both Scottish and English families, and they raided the entire Border country without regard to their victims' nationality. Their heyday was perhaps in the last hundred years of their existence, during the time of the Stewart Kings in Scotland and the Tudor dynasty in England.
Scotland and England were frequently at war during the late Middle Ages. During these wars, the livelihood of the people on the Borders was devastated by the contending armies. Even when the countries were not at war, tension remained high, and royal authority in either kingdom was often weak. The uncertainty of existence meant that communities or people kindred to each other would seek security through their own strength and cunning, and improve their livelihoods at their nominal enemies' expense. Loyalty to a feeble or distant monarch and reliance on the effectiveness of the law usually made people a target for depredations rather than conferring any security.

I go in search of the remains of Lonkin's Hall and try to follow some of the old Border Ballad. Just shy of 6 miles. There are various tellings of the same tale and although the Scots claim it as their own, we in Northumberland have the remains of Lonkin's Hall (the supposed hideout of Lang Lonkin). Although originally the foundations of a 13th century castle, it has had the name Lonkin's Hall in relation to the tale since before the first maps. Lang Lonkin is a rogue, a robber and highway man who is said to have lived about the 15th-16th century. His hideout was the ruins of Philip de Ulecote's castle foundations. The Scottish version of the tale has him as a wronged stonemason who was working on Lord Weary's castle at Balwearie, Fife (hardly border country). More likely the Scottish v...

This movie is sort of South Africa's answer to 'Stripes' crossed with 'Ballad of the Green Berets', 'Mister Roberts', and 'The Odd Angry Shot'. It has three main characters. Boetie ("Sonny") van Tonder (played by Arnold Vosloo), the spoiled stepson of a rich South African politician, is an aimless playboy majoring in astronomy at university. His stepfather needs to win an upcoming close bi-election, so he bribes Boetie to join the Defense Force. "Dampies" Ball (played by Frank Dankert) is a poor lower-class mechanic with a pregnant wife. He has dodged the draft before and has finally been caught. Both are reluctant to serve and just want to get it over with. Corporal Botes (played by Eric Nobbs), who the pair meet at the front gate of the base, is in charge of training these apathetic recr...
