“Preventive Medicine” has arrived for those at risk for HIV. New medical strategies are available to help prevent HIV from being transmitted. As futuristic as this concept seems, it is part of a preventive revolution for medical care – where an “ounce of prevention” may be worth more than a “pound of cure.” TEDxUCLA was organized by UCLA Extension Visual Arts and UCLA Residential Life. http://visual.uclaextension.edu Raphael Landovitz’s clinical research career focuses on optimizing the use of HIV antiretroviral therapy for both HIV treatment and HIV prevention. Dr. Landovitz was trained at Princeton University and Harvard Medical School. 'Sometimes, You Can Lie Without Knowing It' Push for HIV awareness with Pinocchio-inspired spot AIDES: Pinocchio gets a Woody for HIV prevention After years of getting attention with playfully explicit sexuality, the AIDES campaign has taken a different turn with this new PSA from TBWA France: "Woody" (English slang for an erection) represents one of the more than half-million European walking around — and clubbing, and having sex — without realizing that they are HIV positive. From the campaign press release: In Europe, around 650, 000 PEOPLE ARE STILL UNAWARE OF THEIR HIV STATUS. This lack of knowledge puts their health in danger and encourages the spread of the virus. We now know that HIV treatment also considerably reduces the risk of transmission. Therefore, persuading these 6...

Russia, the largest country on earth, which emerged from the post-Soviet economic and political chaos to reassert itself, is facing an HIV/Aids epidemic. The current rate of HIV is less than 1 percent of Russia's population of 143 million. It's far lower than many other countries, such as South Africa (12,2 percent), which have been battling HIV epidemics. Russia has one of the fastest-growing rates of HIV/Aids in the world. At the beginning of this year, the number of registered HIV-positive people surpassed one million. The number of Russians living with HIV has almost doubled in the last five years. The 2016 UNAIDS Prevention Gap Report pointed to Eastern Europe and Central Asia as "the only region in the world where the HIV epidemic continued to rise rapidly." Russian activists say...

AMP stands for Antibody Mediated Prevention, and the purpose of the AMP studies being conducted nationwide is to determine whether giving participants synthetic antibodies will ultimately protect them from contracting HIV. The AMP study is a new idea for HIV prevention that is related to work that's already been done in area of HIV vaccine research. In traditional HIV vaccine studies, participants received a vaccine and researchers waited to see whether their bodies produced antibodies against HIV in response. In the AMP study, that step will be skipped, and participants will be given the antibodies directly via an intravenous infusion, commonly known as an “IV. This is the first study ever to test whether antibodies can prevent HIV infections in people.

To maximize reductions in HIV infections, High-Impact Prevention seeks to effectively distribute limited resources and combine prevention strategies in the smartest and most effective way possible for the populations and areas most affected by the HIV epidemic. Because of the good news that HIV incidence is stable and effective treatment exists to prevent illness and death, a growing number of persons—over 1.1 million—are living with HIV. Approximately one in five of those are not aware that they are infected. Continued growth in the number of people living with HIV—especially those unaware of their infection—ultimately may lead to more infections, if prevention, care and treatment are not targeted to those at greatest risk. At the same time, recent scientific breakthroughs in treatment, p...
