Here’s a D-42 that was owned by an actual human who enthusiastically played his guitar…every day. We deal with a lot of people who own “lots” of guitars. Quite often I ask them “which one do you love?” and the answer comes back: “the one I play!”. Think about it, we all tend to acquire these things, but the real joy comes when we finally bond with it and realize that “this” is the one! It’s a Collings D-42 built in 1997. The nut width is 1 and 11/16″. The Brazilian was rated “A” grade back then – 18 years ago. We struggle today to get Brazilian as pretty as this today. The tuners are GOLD ENGRAVED Waverlies. The top is master grade Adirondack spruce. The braces are Adirondack spruce. The top is inlayed with a full 42-Style abalone border and the fretboard and bridge are inlayed with 45-Style snowflakes. The sound is exceptional. The experience is hard to duplicate. Here’s the thing: This guitar has been played, more or less every day, for eighteen years. It’s been re-fretted once or twice. The pick guard has a tiny bit of “lift” on the lower edge. The guitar has a ding and some finish checking on the back (around the style 3 backstrip – closeup visible in the pictures) and it sounds AMAZING. Should you buy it? Yes, but not if you are the kind of guy who fusses about dings and scratches and finish checking (you know who you are). You should leave it for a fellow (or gal) like me who likes them this way – likes them played – and will not be afraid to pick it up, take it out, and let it rip. Embrace the mojo! Part of us hopes no one buys it, because I cannot tell you how nice it is to have a Collings D42 Brazilian “player” that we are not afraid to take out and show folks. Imagine this: A customer walks in the AMW door for the first time, asks what “all this excitement about this brand Collings” (he’s) been hearing so much about, and the first thing we hand him – just for fun – is this old thing! Needless to say, it’s a conversation starter! And a jaw dropper. So…enough said. It’s a great sounding eighteen year old Brazilian rosewood Collings D-42 guitar for just the right person.
