Drowning in junk mail? Fed up with those pre-recorded spam phone calls from robotic voices?
It's time to fight back.
Our
Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis is here to help you slam the metaphorical door in the face of junk mail, calls, faxes, texts and emails.
1.
Stop spam texts filling your inbox
From dodgy
PPI firms and ambulance chasers to pension unlockers and debt write-offs, researchers found over 350,
000 types of messages clogging up our mobiles. These are messages you never asked for and don't want, so follow my simple tips to fight back.
Take immediate action by removing your number from anywhere it might be online (
Facebook, Twitter) and in future, guard your number fiercely, particularly when filling in details for marketing companies
.
If the text is from a firm you know, with clear sender details, text back
STOP. If it's anonymous PPI or debt write-off types,
DON'T. It may add you to databases.
Instead, forward the text to 7726 (spells
SPAM on many phone pads).
Include the number that sent it to you. This way the network investigates - enough reports and the spamming Sim's disconnected. You can also report spammers to the
Information Commissioner, though forwarding the texts correctly results in the same thing.
2.
Spam calls are a nuisance, no matter how friendly they seem
To stop spam calls,
sign up to the free
Telephone Preference Service. It's free and gets to work in about
28 days. Although, it won't stop all calls, such as some from outside the UK, it's the best action you can take. Any UK company then calling you (unless you've agreed they can) is then breaking the law.
If you're getting silent calls, register with the free SilentCall-Gard. It adds you to a database used by the major telemarketing firms, and should cut the amount significantly
. If the calls continue, complain to
Ofcom, which recently fined phone and broadband provider TalkTalk £750,000 for its excessive number of silent calls.
3.
Enjoy your evening in
peace without a knock at the door
If you want to stop people knocking at your door (not everyone does, you never know what you're missing out on), get a "no cold callers" sign -- there are many available free to download online.
Legal opinion obtained by
Trading Standards says firms then knocking are breaking the law, though that's untested. But let's be honest, some will still knock. In which case, open the door, smile,
point at the sign, and say "no thanks".
4.
Does most of your mail go straight in the recycling? Take action!
There are two different types of junk mail: letters with your name and address on, or those without, but still distributed by
Royal Mail. Both can be stopped, but this is not a legal right. For junk mail addressed and targeted to you, join the
Mail Preference Service register.
It takes up to four months for the service to take full effect, although you should notice it kick in before then. Though unlike the telephone preference service, it's not then illegal for firms to stop sending post to you.
For unaddressed leaflets, flyers and other junk, the Royal Mail has the online door-to-door opt-out, which will stop them delivering to you - or write to; Freepost RSTR-YCYS-TGLJ, Royal Mail Door-to-Door Opt-Outs, Kingsmead
House,
Oxpens Road,
Oxford,
