Do you think the SM57 is worth the extra money?
In my opinion, I can't hear much difference in the clean sound (SM57 slighter cleaner) but I believe that on overdrive, the SM57 sounds a lot more full and tighter :-)

This is an A/B style comparison between the Audix i5 and Shure SM57 on the snare drum. All the audio is unprocessed except for the snare solo at the end of the video which has a little EQ and Compression. Let me know what you guys think and which mic you think sounds better. In this video we record Shure SM57 microphones in various placements, both on-axis and off-axis in front of a guitar amplifier. Some of these mic placements are widely considered to be the best for modern guitar recording.
No effects pedals were used in this video, simply the guitars (1999 Gibson SG Standard, 2007 Fender Jazzmaster) straight into a 2006 Vox AC30CC2, picked up by the various Shure SM57's all at the same time. These signals were then fed to the Presonus FP10 interface and captured on Ableton Live 9.
No effects, compression, reverb or EQ was added to the Ableton Live mix.

Video was edited using Final Cut Pro 7

The Shure SM57 is a low-impedance, unidirectional, dynamic microphone made by Shure Incorporated and commonly used in live sound reinforcement and studio recording. It is one of the best-selling microphones in the world. It is used extensively in amplified music and has been used by every U.S. president since its introduction in 1965. In 2004, honoring its four decades of "solid, dependable performance", it was inducted into the first-ever TEC Awards TECnology Hall of Fame.
The origin of SM57 may be traced to 1937, when Shure engineer Ben Bauer developed the first single-element directional microphone, the Unidyne, which had a cardioid pickup pattern. In 1959, another Shure engineer, Ernie Seeler, advanced the art of microphone design significantly with the Unidyne III. Seeler torture-tested the Unidyne III during three years of research and development and thereby, produced the SM series of rugged and reliable Shure microphone capsules. The "SM" stands for Studio Microphone; Seeler was an aficionado of classical music and expected the SM57 to be used for orchestras. He "despised" rock music, but ironically, the microphone ended up being widely used during amplified concerts.

In my opinion, I can't hear much difference in the clean sound (SM57 slighter cleaner) but I believe that on overdrive, the SM57 sounds a lot more full and tighter :-)

In this video we record Shure SM57 microphones in various placements, both on-axis and off-axis in front of a guitar amplifier. Some of these mic placements are widely considered to be the best for modern guitar recording.
No effects pedals were used in this video, simply the guitars (1999 Gibson SG Standard, 2007 Fender Jazzmaster) straight into a 2006 Vox AC30CC2, picked up by the various Shure SM57's all at the same time. These signals were then fed to the Presonus FP10 interface and captured on Ableton Live 9.
No effects, compression, reverb or EQ was added to the Ableton Live mix.
Video was captured on the Black Magic Cinema Camera
Video was edited using Final Cut Pro 7

This is a Shure SM57 microphone vocal test. I wanted to show how the
SM57 sounds for vocals including talking and singing. Jump to 3:30 to see compressed and eq'd version.
The video is split into two halves. The first half has no effects, compression, or eq. It's just the SM57 through the Mogami mic cable into the Mbox2.
The second half (@ 3:30) has vocal compression and just a touch of eq. I just raised the highs a little. The purpose of this was to again show what this mic can do.

The SM57 and (SM58) is a great mic, but the performance can be noticeably improved by simply removing the stock transformer. Keep in mind this will void your warranty with Shure.
I find the modded mic to be much smoother and less "honky"--almost indiscernible from the SM7b.
This mod was not my invention! Thanks to TapeOp magazine for the original idea.
