Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia (Hindi: पण्डित हरिप्रसाद चौरसिया; born 1 July 1938) is an Indian classical flutist. He plays in the North Indian tradition.
Chaurasia was born in Allahabad in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. His father was a wrestler. His mother died when he was 6. He had to learn music without his father's knowledge, for his father wanted him to become a wrestler. He did go to the Akhada and train with his father for some time, although he also started learning music and practising at his friend's house. He has stated,
Chaurasia started learning vocal music from his neighbour, Pandit Rajaram, at the age of 15. Later, he switched to playing the flute under the tutelage of Pandit Bholanath Prasanna of Varanasi for eight years. He joined the All India Radio, Cuttack, Odisha in 1957 and worked as a composer and performer. Much later, while working for All India Radio, he received guidance from the reclusive Annapurna Devi, daughter of Baba Allaudin Khan. She only agreed to teach him if he switched from right-handed to left-handed playing (so as to start over free from any pre-existing errement). Another version is that she only agreed to teach him after he (of his own) took the decision to switch from right-handed to left-handed playing to show her his commitment. In any case Chaurasia plays left-handed to this day.
The bansuri is a transverse flute of South Asia made from a single hollow shaft of bamboo with six or seven finger holes. An ancient musical instrument associated with cowherds and the pastoral tradition, it is intimately linked to the love story of Krishna and Radha and is also depicted in Buddhist paintings from around 100 CE. The Bansuri is revered as Lord Krishna's divine instrument and is often associated with Krishna's Rasa lila; mythological accounts tell of the tunes of Krishna's flute having a spellbinding and enthralling effect not only on the women of the Braj, but even on the animals of the region. The North Indian bansuri, typically about 14 inches in length, was traditionally used as a soprano instrument primarily for accompaniment in lighter compositions including film music. The bass variety (approximately 30", tonic E3 at A440Hz), pioneered by Pannalal Ghosh has now been indispensable in Hindustani Classical music for well over half a century. Bansuris range in size from less than 12" to nearly 40".
The Nāṭya Śāstra (Sanskrit: नाट्य शास्त्र, Nāṭyaśāstra) is a Indian treatise on the performing arts, encompassing theatre, dance and music. It was written during the period between 200 BCE and 200 CE in classical India and is traditionally attributed to the Sage Bharata.
The Nāṭya Śāstra is wide in its scope. While it primarily deals with stagecraft, it has come to influence music, classical Indian dance, and literature as well. It covers stage design, music, dance, makeup, and virtually every other aspect of stagecraft. It is important to the history of Indian classical music because it is the only text which gives such detail about the music and instruments of the period. Thus, an argument can be made that the Natya Shastra is the foundation of the fine arts in India. The most authoritative commentary on the Natya Shastra is Abhinavabharati by Abhinavagupta.
The text, consisting of 6000 slokas, is attributed to the muni (sage) Bharata and is believed, by most scholars, to have been written during the period between 200 BCE and 200 CE. However, Bharat Gupt has shown that it was compiled in its present version as early as 5th century BC. Bharat Gupt argues that all the technical terms for music and theater used in the Ramayana of Valmiki and also in the Mahabharata are already used in the text of NS composed by Bharata Muni. The Natya Shastra is based upon the much older Gandharva Veda (appendix to Sama Veda) which contained 36000 slokas. Unfortunately there are no surviving copies of the Natya Veda. Though many scholars believe most slokas were transmitted only through the oral tradition, there are scholars who believe that it may have been written by various authors at different times.
The flute is a family of a musical instrument in the woodwind group. Unlike woodwind instruments with reeds, a flute is an aerophone or reedless wind instrument that produces its sound from the flow of air across an opening. According to the instrument classification of Hornbostel–Sachs, flutes are categorized as edge-blown aerophones.
A musician who plays the flute can be referred to as a flute player, flautist, flutist or, less commonly, fluter or flutenist.
Flutes are the earliest extant musical instruments. A number of flutes dating to about 43,000 to 35,000 years ago have been found in the Swabian Alb region of Germany. These flutes demonstrate that a developed musical tradition existed from the earliest period of modern human presence in Europe. Flutes, including the famous Bansuri, have been an integral part of Indian classical music since 1500 BC. A major deity of Hinduism, Krishna, has been associated with the flute.
The word flute first entered the English language during the Middle English period, as floute, or else flowte, flo(y)te, possibly from Old French flaute and from Old Provençal flaüt, or else from Old French fleüte, flaüte, flahute via Middle High German floite or Dutch fluit. The English verb flout has the same linguistic root, and the modern Dutch verb fluiten still shares the two meanings. Attempts to trace the word back to the Latin flare (to blow, inflate) have been pronounced "phonologically impossible" or "inadmissable". The first known use of the word flute was in the 14th century. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, this was in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Hous of Fame, c.1380.
Music is an art form and cultural activity whose medium is sound and silence. The common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture (which are sometimes termed the "color" of a musical sound). Different styles or types of music may emphasize, de-emphasize or omit some of these elements. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and with vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping, and there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal pieces and pieces that combine singing and instruments. The word derives from Greek μουσική (mousike; "art of the Muses"). In its most general form, the activities describing music as an art form include the production of works of music (songs, tunes, symphonies, and so on), the criticism of music, the study of the history of music, and the aesthetic examination of music. Ancient Greek and Indian philosophers defined music as tones ordered horizontally as melodies and vertically as harmonies. Common sayings such as "the harmony of the spheres" and "it is music to my ears" point to the notion that music is often ordered and pleasant to listen to. However, 20th-century composer John Cage thought that any sound can be music, saying, for example, "There is no noise, only sound."

When asked why any musician of this generation isn't earning a reputation like him and others of his time, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia says that the times have changed and hence things are different. He adds that during his time he used to be elated by scoring 36% marks in exams whereas now students who score in the 90s don't feel happy. Benisour... Akon...
Convict
So soft and slow
Never knew a girl could be so Godamn cold
I know, the way she move
Got me spinning my dough, and yo
If you seen what I had seen on that pole, just know
That I was wrong for falling in love
I was wrong for falling in love
(They always say don't love a hoe)
I was wrong for falling in love
(don't do it yo)
I was wrong for falling in love
(they always say don't love a hoe, but I just went against the grain)
It was a feeling I can't explain, and it felt like harmony
Singing in my face like Diddy, daddy, doo da dey
I don't want it to ever go away
It went around me every day
Singing in my face like diddy daddy do da dey
[Verse 1: Benisour]
Silly me, so foolish
Voice in my head sayin "man don't do it"
But she stood 6 feet in them heels
Face like a china dog, with a body to kill
Know it was about cash, wish it was real
I smile, her walk, plus I good the kitty feel
We were takin trips every other week
Grenade epimony, gifts from Tiffany
Said she was sick of me, said that we need space
Come to find out she found another dude with more cake
From the beginning I knew I made a mistake...
I was wrong for falling in love,
I was wrong for falling in love,
(they always say don't love a hoe)
I was wrong for falling in love,
... (don't do it yo)
I was wrong for falling in love,
(they always say don't love a hoe, but I just went against the grain).
It was a feeling I can't explain, and it felt like harmony
Singing in my face like diddy daddy do da dey
I don't want it to ever go away
It went around me every day
Singing in my face, like diddy daddy do da dey
[Verse 2: Benisour]
Yeaa...
I'm here feeling like me ya'll
So sick
Thought this was the chick I could spend my life with
Settle down, do what grown folk do
In my eyes she was the one I would give my last name to
Was a fool thinking I could ever change her
Caking every day, to totally upgrade her
Louis V this, Erb mace that, Christian Ascota, Dolce Gabona
May say I'm crazy but I wish I had her with me
And I would take her back if she said please forgive me
But in her eyes I was just another guy...
I was wrong for falling in love,
I was wrong for falling in love,
(they always say don't love a hoe)
I was wrong for falling in love
(Don't do it yo)
I was wrong for falling in love
(They always say don't love a hoe, but I just went against the grain)
It was a feeling I can't explain, and it felt like harmony
Singing in my face like diddy daddy do da dey
I don't want it to ever go away
It went around me every day
