A company secretary is the one who takes care of all legal obligations of the company. The main duties of a company secretary includes calling meetings, keeping book records, managing interest and dividend payment, executing agreements and other legal formalities. Do not confuse the position of personal secretary with company secretary. Those who have a degree in CS can only apply for company secretary.
Personal secretary is the one who assists any executive or manager in their daily activities.
Freshers are sought for trainee or entry level position and for managerial or senior positions! Candidates with more than five years experience are usually sought by major companies.
The candidate can have any undergraduate degree and should have completed company secretaryship course (CS). Candidates with doctorates are not usually sought for this position. The requirements of the companies vary from each other. Some companies might seek CS candidates with banking background or any finance background too. The candidates with experience in dealing with financial regulatory bodies, stock market regulatory bodies and others are usually sought. Candidates with commerce and banking related educational background are usually sought by certain companies. Other requirements include

Knowledge about company law, investment law and other regulations

Knowledge in dealing with shareholder’s complaints
c) Knowledge in drafting contracts and agreements
d) Knowledge in dealing with legal activities like court hearings and others
Apart from these, the candidates should have some basic skills like
a)
Good communication skill ( both
English and the local language)
b)
People’s skill ( CS has to communicate with the shareholders and other regulatory bodies)
c)
Basic computer skills
d) Knowledge in handling accounting software packages
e)
Up to date information about tax and company law of India
The job is completely related to handling the legal affairs of the company. The candidate would be required to undertake a lot of different functions starting from operational activities like drafting minutes, writing reports and others to managerial activities like creating minutes of the meeting and so on. Apart from these, a company secretary should handle the stock market related affairs starting from regulations to shareholder’s complaints.

Almost all the major companies need candidates with CS to deal with their broking, legal obligations and related fields. Thus, the demand for this position is very high. You would be hired for performing operational duties like record keeping, filing returns, registering with regulatory bodies, assisting the company secretary in drafting agreements and so on. Candidates with an under-graduate degree in banking, broking or finance are usually sought.
It is true that the initial pay for such a position would be very low. But, if you are able to stick to a job and gain experience, you would be sought by many companies for top positions for six digit annual salary.
