UGANDA LIFE - GRACE FROM KAABONG
In 2009, Chris Crowstaff, founder of The Safeworld International Foundation, travelled to Kaabong in north-east Uganda to visit Grace Loumo, after learning about the inspirational work of Grace and her women's organisation, AWARE Uganda. 28 years ago Grace Louma moved to her husband's ancestral home in Kaabong, Karamoja - a semi-desert, poverty-stricken region. What she discovered about the way the women were treated so shocked Grace that she made a decision that changed her life - and the lives of the women of Kaabong. 28 years on, Aware Uganda is now the focal point of hundreds of women's lives. Through developing small scale community projects, encouraging education and creating its own micro-finance system, a more caring and empathetic attitude towards women has grown to the betterment of all. 'Grace from Kaabong' is a short, heart-warming snapshot into the life of Grace and the people she works with. Kaabong death traps
www.ntvuganda.co.ug Last week's avalanche in Kaabong district has brought to the fore the dangers faced by residents living on the slopes of the mountains. The casualties registered last week has pushed the government to plan a re-location exercise for over 500 people currently living at the foot of Naoyogum hills.

Uganda: Suffering From Chronic Neglect in Kaabong
The people of Kaabong District, located in the Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda, have the unenviable title of being among the poorest in the country. Large parts of the population suffer from violence and chronic neglect—70 percent cannot access health care. Women are particularly affected; the maternal mortality rate in the area is 750 while the national average is 435 per 100000 live births. Infant mortality is 105 per 1000 live births in Karamoja while the national rate is 76, according to 2008 UN statistics. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières' (MSF) purpose in Kaabong is to help strengthen government health services. Teams are supporting nine Ministry of Health centers and the district referral hospital. They also run mobile clinics to isolated areas, offering medical services to the many people who can't reach a health facility on their own.

MAF Caravan 208 Landing in NE Uganda at Kaabong
This is an unofficial video and gives a feel of what it is like landing up in Kaabong in Karamoja in the far NE of Uganda. Quite a bit of cross wind up there, as usual. The people we went up to meet are from MEDAIR a great charity who really do the stuff and do it well.

Kaabong Entering Manyata
The MJAP REACH-U team in Kaabong district at the rift valley bordering Kenya. This was a field visit showcasing the work of the REACH-U project. A manyata is a homestead for the karamojong and a very hard community to penetrate. They have very low entrances made of thorns and sharp dry wood traditionally built for protection against intruders.
