Maryland has an area of 12,406.68 square miles (32,133.2 km2) and is comparable in overall area with the European country of Belgium (11,787 square miles (30,530 km2)). It is the 42nd largest/9th smallest state, and is closest in size to Hawaii (10,930.98 square miles (28,311.1 km2)), the next smallest state. The next largest state, Maryland's neighbor West Virginia, is almost twice the size of Maryland (24,229.76 square miles (62,754.8 km2)).
Speaker Nancy Pelosi created a new leadership post, Assistant to the Speaker, in 2006 so that Van Hollen could be present at all leadership meetings. After the Democrats regained control of the House in the 2006 elections, Van Hollen became the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the fifth-ranking position among House Democrats. In this post, Van Hollen was responsible for leading efforts to get more Democrats elected to Congress.
After the Democratic losses in 2010, Van Hollen did not run for re-election to chair of the DCCC. Van Hollen instead chose to run for the top Democratic spot on the House Budget Committee, which was being vacated by outgoing chairman John Spratt who had been defeated for re-election. Van Hollen was elected as the ranking member on the Budget Committee on November 17, 2010. Pelosi appointed him to the 12-member bipartisan Committee on Deficit Reduction with a mandate for finding major budget reductions by late 2011.

Take in the many splendors of the nation’s capital when you arrive at Washington, D.C.
Your Washington, D.C. tour should start at the National Mall, where you’ll find monuments, memorials, and government buildings instead of tons of shopping. If you’d like to get around town easily but don’t want to rent a car, the Capital Bikeshare program will let you cruise around the city without wasting gas or getting stuck in traffic.
Check out the Watergate Hotel and Kennedy Center when you stop at Foggy Bottom, then move on to Georgetown, the oldest district in D.C. It’s filled with 18th-century buildings and, of course, the university itself. After a stop at the National Cathedral, make your way to the Smithsonian National Zoo, the perfect stop for the young and the young at heart.
If you’re feeling the need to channel your inner 007, go to the International Spy Museum, and learn about the covert operations and intelligence agencies that have shaped the world we live in. Of course, you can’t enjoy any Washington, D.C., tourism without admiring the White House, so make sure that’s on your list too.
Visit our Washington, D.C., travel guide page for more information or to plan your next vacation!

Maryland Democrat Barbara Mikulski, whose state is home to the headquarters of the NSA, took to the senate floor last week to slam former analyst Edward Snowden, while defending the National Security Agency and their "36 hour" work week.
Mikulksi railed against the shut down of bulk collection of data and the host of other surveillance programs set to expire by failing to renew their legal authority before the Senate goes to recess.

Ha ha ha!’ They have a program that someone literally disgraced, tried to disgrace the United States of America and render it helpless in terms of our ability to protect us. Gitmo Inmate: CIA Torture Was Darker Than Senate Report
(Newser) – "I wished they had killed me," detainee Majid Khan told lawyers of abuse he suffered at Guantanamo Bay, per Reuters. The mistreatment that the former Maryland resident says he endured went beyond the methods described in the Senate's December report: According to the Center for Constitutional Rights, a nonprofit representing Khan, brutal techniques included dumping ice water on his genitals, sexually assaulting him with enemas, hanging him from a wooden beam for three days, and keeping him in a completely dark, bug-infested cell for nearly a year, with only a bucket for a toilet, the AP reports. Khan's accounts were compiled by his lawyers over seven years into a 27-page document and declassified by the US government last month. Khan is to be sentenced in February on charges of conspiracy, murder, and attempted murder for assisting al-Qaeda. He has taken a plea deal with the government, with a possible sentence of 19 to 25 years instead of life in prison, but his attorney wants a more lenient sentence based on his torture allegations—especially since Khan had agreed to cooperate before what Dixon calls "gratuitous" torture. "I lived in anxiety every moment of every single day about the fear and anticipation of the unknown," Khan says, adding that he suffered panic attacks, nightmares, and hallucinations, Reuters notes. The most brutal abuse reportedly only let up once the Detainee Treatment Act passed in 2005. CIA officials have not yet commented on Khan's allegati...

Maryland Senator Calls Baltimore Riots 'Heartbreaking'
One day after riots broke out in Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray, Maryland Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin took to the Senate floor, calling Monday’s violence “heartbreaking” while urging protestors to "exercise restraint."
"Baltimore is known for its people, its friendliness and its real pride in the strong neighborhoods. That was shaken very badly during the events of yesterday," Cardin said. "What happened to Freddie Gray is something that needs to be fully investigated … and I was pleased that we will have that independent investigation done by the Department of Justice … there were a small number that decided to take to the streets in violence. It was counterproductive to the message.”

Washington D.C. Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
http://www.expedia.com/Washington.d178318.Destination-Travel-Guides

Maryland's newly introduced SB-281 Firearm "Safety" Act of 2013 bill will restrict gun ownership and make many of Maryland's law abiding citizens instant criminals. This video documents State Senator James Brochin's (42nd Legislative District) town hall meeting to a standing room only crowd of concerned citizens where he reassures them he will do everything within his power to nullify or mitigate the most draconian aspects of the bill.

Barbara Mikulski Slams "Eric" Snowden on Senate Floor
Maryland Democrat Barbara Mikulski, whose state is home to the headquarters of the NSA, took to the senate floor last week to slam former analyst Edward Snowden, while defending the National Security Agency and their "36 hour" work week.
Mikulksi railed against the shut down of bulk collection of data and the host of other surveillance programs set to expire by failing to renew their legal authority before the Senate goes to recess.
“I’ve got to believe that tonight the world is watching us and they say: ‘There goes the United States Senate and there they go home. Ha ha ha!’ They have a program that someone literally disgraced, tried to disgrace the United States of America and render it helpless in terms of our ability to protect us. The name is Eric Snowden.”

Mikulski Calls on HHS Secretary to Protect Critical Federal Funding for Western Maryland
On Thursday, April 23, 2015, U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.), Vice Chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, at a hearing of the Senate Labor, Health and Human Services (LHHS) Appropriations Committee, called on U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell to protect access to critical federal grant funding for Allegany County to support access to quality, affordable health care for Western Maryland families. The Senator’s request follows up on a letter she sent in February to Secretary Burwell after the federal government re-designated Allegany County as no longer being a rural community, prohibiting the County from being eligible to receive federal rural health grant funding targeted to rural communities across the county.
