Clover, a Congo African Grey parrot shows off some of her 350 word vocabulary. This was Clover's winning entry in the "professional" division of the Kaytee International "Best Talking Parrot" competition in 2011.
For those of you that enjoy this video and hope to get a parrot, I caution you that besides the cute talking, Clover spends 6+ hours a day clicking, honking, whistling, car alarms, shrieking, clucking, and begging for junk food, more nuts, more fruit, more showers, etc.
Parrots are messy, poopy, destructive, bitey and throw sticky food everywhere. Because of Clover, I spent over an hour a day vacuuming and doing other cleaning. Parrots like African Greys create up to a tablespoon of "dust" in their feathers every day. Despite my perpetual cleaning, dust from Clover's feathers got into my 1-year-old laptop and destroyed it.
Parrots need almost non-stop interaction and care during the day. Parrots the size of Clover also need about $500-1000 in toys and "gear" every year just to keep them occupied for a few minutes of the day.
Don't get one if you do not have almost limitless money. Besides the purchase price (medium-large parrots are typically over $1000 in the U.S.) and a large cage ($500-$2000), parrots are extremely expensive to maintain. They need an endless supply of new toys...organic food...fresh food supplements... large cage... play stands... $300 typical annual vet appointment (if there is nothing wrong), etc. Please visit this site: http://www.parrotsr4ever.org/Pre_Aqui..., and click on all the links before getting a parrot.I wish I had found that site before getting Clover!
If your dream is to have a 3 year old, biting, screaming, destructive child in the room with you for the next 35 years, by all means get a parrot. But please adopt it from rescue. Some estimates show that 1 MILLION parrots are currently in rescues in the USA awaiting homes. These were all birds that people got as babies thinking they would raise it "their way" and it would be great. Note that it was not, and they ended up giving it away. Adult rescue parrots are often easier to train than babies and more grateful to adopters too. Thanks!
P.S. I got Clover while living in Istanbul and had her from 2008-2012. I filled out tons of applications to bring her back to the U.S. when I returned home, but one permit was denied. In the end, she stayed behind in Istanbul with a wonderful young couple who also have another female African Grey. She has continued her life of free-flying indoors, and being out of her cage most of the day with owners who work at home.

Hilarious video with our amazing African Grey Parrot "Lucky" as she shows a bit of her character while wandering around our sailboat "Sophisticated Lady' in the Caribbean. "Lucky" has lived onboard full time for almost 10 years and has developed quite an astute personality in addition to her overwhelming vocubulary of several hundred words, phrases, sentences, sounds, etc.
In that amount of time she has also gained over 60,000 sea miles and has proven without a doubt that parrots can easily take to life on the sea. She has been extensively socialized and accompanies us ashore for many a happy hour... she is likely one of the most photographed African Greys in the world, and loves the attention... until she's had enough and tells me she's ready to go home, Lol.

Chopper meanwhile finds himself being worshiped as the island's new king by the animals. According to Momambi(a jungle boy) a new king appears from the heavens when the old one pasts away. Momambi was over joy to have someone like Chopper to be their new king. But Chopper doesn't want to hold that title and tries to reason that he's really a pirate. Momambi, refused for Chopper to take the path of being a pirate. And insists that he'll be much happier as Crown Island's ruler. To make matters worse, a trio of human "horn" hunters are on the island. The leader, Count Butler is a violin playing/horn eating human who wants to eat the island's treasure to inherit immense power. Will Luffy & the rest be able to prevent the count from terrorizing the island? And will they be able to convince Momambi that not all pirates are bad?

Clover, a Congo African Grey parrot shows off some of her 350 word vocabulary. This was Clover's winning entry in the "professional" division of the Kaytee International "Best Talking Parrot" competition in 2011.
For those of you that enjoy this video and hope to get a parrot, I caution you that besides the cute talking, Clover spends 6+ hours a day clicking, honking, whistling, car alarms, shrieking, clucking, and begging for junk food, more nuts, more fruit, more showers, etc.
Parrots are messy, poopy, destructive, bitey and throw sticky food everywhere. Because of Clover, I spent over an hour a day vacuuming and doing other cleaning. Parrots like African Greys create up to a tablespoon of "dust" in their feathers every day. Despite my perpetual cleaning, dust from Clover's feathers got into my 1-year-old laptop and destroyed it.
Parrots need almost non-stop interaction and care during the day. Parrots the size of Clover also need about $500-1000 in toys and "gear" every year just to keep them occupied for a few minutes of the day.
Don't get one if you do not have almost limitless money. Besides the purchase price (medium-large parrots are typically over $1000 in the U.S.) and a large cage ($500-$2000), parrots are extremely expensive to maintain. If your dream is to have a 3 year old, biting, screaming, destructive child in the room with you for the next 35 years, by all means get a parrot. But please adopt it from rescue. Some estimates show that 1 MILLION parrots are currently in rescues in the USA awaiting homes. These were all birds that people got as babies thinking they would raise it "their way" and it would be great. Note that it was not, and they ended up giving it away. Adult rescue parrots are often easier to train than babies and more grateful to adopters too. Thanks!
P.S. I got Clover while living in Istanbul and had her from 2008-2012. I filled out tons of applications to bring her back to the U.S. when I returned home, but one permit was denied. In the end, she stayed behind in Istanbul with a wonderful young couple who also have another female African Grey. She has continued her life of free-flying indoors, and being out of her cage most of the day with owners who work at home.

Video about how to make a parrot not bite you. No parrot bites occur in this video because the right approach is used and the bird is not put into a situation where it wants to bite.
I am birdsitting a friend's blue and gold macaw for a few weeks. The first time I met this bird it bit me, Not too hard, but a premeditated bite nonetheless. So I am going to show you a bit of how I worked with this parrot and how my brother approaches her to step up for the first time without getting bit at all.
Since this parrot has been known to bite, I was secretly hoping to catch a clip of my brother getting nailed by this boarding parrot. But he did everything exactly the right way, plus the handling and socialization I've been putting in with this bird all week, biting did not occur.
Since my brother did such a fantastic job handling an unfamiliar bird with success, I had him elaborate on the approach he used to help you learn to approach a parrot without making it bite you.
Rachel is a 2 year old blue and gold macaw that has begun to get testy with biting this summer. She is moving up into the juvenile testing stage and has been known to bite everyone but her owner. So I've been working to reverse that with training and socialization while the parrot is staying with me.
