The masculine given name Bernard and its variations are of West Germanic origin.
The meaning of the name is from a Germanic compound Bern-hard meaning "bear-hardy/brave/strong", or "hardy/brave/strong as a bear".Bern- is the old form of bear, from West Germanic *beran-.
The name was notably popular among Old Frisian speakers, where the most common spelling was Bernhard.
The following people and items share the name Bernard.
Isidore Verheyden (24 January 1846 in Antwerp – 1 November 1905 in Elsene) was a Belgian painter of landscapes, portraits and still life.
He was the son of painter Jean-François Verheyden; his first teacher at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels was Joseph Quinaux, and in 1866 he entered the studio of Jean-François Portaels for further study. He also studied under the landscape painter Théodore Baron; he in turn taught Anna Boch.
Verheyden was a founding member of the anti-academic Société Libre des Beaux-Arts in 1868, and a member of Les XX from 1884 to 1886.
Guy Van Waas (Brussels, 1948) is a Belgian conductor, clarinetist and organist.
He was clarinetist of the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century. Since 2001 he is director of Les Agrémens, a baroque orchestra sponsored by the Communauté française de Belgique and conductor of the Choeur de Chambre de Namur. He was also professor of chamber music at the Conservatoire of Mons.
Nisi Dominus is a setting of the Latin text of Psalm 127 (Vulgate 126) by George Friederic Handel. The name of the piece comes from the first two words (the incipit) of the psalm, and it is catalogued in the composer's complete works as HWV 238. It was completed by 13 July 1707, and is one of a number of works he composed in Italy. It is most likely that Nisi Dominus was first performed on 16 July 1707 in the church of Santa Maria in Montesanto, Rome, under the patronage of the Colonna family.
In the concluding doxology, Handel writes for eight voices in a double chorus and (uniquely in his output) a double string orchestra.
A typical performance lasts almost 12 minutes.
The work has the following movements:

1833 - A village square in the Kempen. Army recruiting is done by drawing lots. This type of conscription was called the "Blood Law". Jan draws a free lot but is duped by a ruthless profiteer into taking someone else's place for a sum of money. That is how he founds himself in the army, where he soon meets brutal and revolting situations. In the meantime, his fiancée, Katrien, tries to keep the little farm going; she ploughs, cuts peat, works ten to fourteen hours a day to be able to pay the rent and, if possible, make a little profit. In the barracks Jan's money is stolen. The money he made by taking over the other man's 3-year service, has gone. At home the goods and chattels are seized because Katrien, unable to cope, cannot pay the rent. Jan is stuck by blindness because of malnutritio...
