In politics, the opposition comprises one or more political parties or other organized groups that are opposed to the government (or, in American English, the administration), party or group in political control of a city, region, state or country. It is the party that goes against another party. The degree of opposition varies according to political conditions - for example, across authoritarian and liberal systems where opposition may be repressed or welcomed.
Opposition may mean or refer to:
The Syrian opposition (Arabic: المعارضة السورية al-Muʕaraḍah as-Sūrīyah Arabic pronunciation: [ʔalmuʕaɾaˈdˤa ʔas.suːˈɾiːja]) is an umbrella term for the political entity represented by the Syrian National Coalition and associated anti-regime Syrian groups with certain territorial control and an alternative Syrian government, claiming to represent the legitimate Syrian Arab Republic. The Syrian opposition evolved since the beginning of the Syrian conflict, from groups calling for regime change in Syria and who have opposed its Ba'athist government. Prior to the Syrian Civil War, the term "opposition" (Arabic "mu'araDah") had been used to refer to traditional political actors, for example the National Coordination Committee for Democratic Change; that is, groups and individuals who have had a history of dissidence against the Syrian state.
The first opposition structures to form in the Syrian uprising were local protest-organizing committees. These formed in April, 2011, as protesters graduated from spontaneous protests to protests organized by meetings beforehand.
The Syrian people (Arabic: الشعب السوري / ALA-LC: al-sha‘ab al-Sūrī; Syriac: ܣܘܪܝܝܢ) are the inhabitants of Syria, and their ancestors who share a common Levantine Semitic ancestry. The term also refers to the citizens of Syria, regardless of ancestry, mother tongue, ethnic identity, or culture.
The cultural and linguistic heritage of the Syrian people is a blend of both indigenous elements and the foreign cultures that have come to rule the land and its people over the course of thousands of years.
The Syrian republic has a population of nearly 17 million as of 2014, in addition to 4 million Syrian refugees. The dominant racial group is the Syrian descendants of the old indigenous peoples who mixed with Arabs and identify themselves as such in addition to ethnic Aramean. The country also includes the following ethnic minorities: Armenians, Assyrians, Circassians, Greeks, Kurds, and Turkmens.
The Syrian diaspora consists of 15 million people of Syrian ancestry, who emigrated to North America (United States and Canada), European Union member states (including Sweden, France and Germany), South America (mainly in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela and Colombia), Australia, and Africa.
Al Jazeera (Arabic: الجزيرة al-ǧazīrah IPA: [æl dʒæˈziːrɐ], literally "The Peninsula", referring to the Arabian Peninsula), also known as JSC (Jazeera Satellite Channel), is a Doha-based state-funded broadcaster owned by the Al Jazeera Media Network, which is partly funded by the House of Thani, the ruling family of Qatar. Initially launched as an Arabic news and current affairs satellite TV channel, Al Jazeera has since expanded into a network with several outlets, including the Internet and specialty TV channels in multiple languages.
Al Jazeera is among the largest news organizations with 80 bureaus around the world. Al Jazeera is owned by the government of Qatar. While Al Jazeera officials have stated that they are editorially independent from the government of Qatar, this assertion has been disputed.
The original Al Jazeera channel's willingness to broadcast dissenting views, for example on call-in shows, created controversies in the Arab States of the Persian Gulf. The station gained worldwide attention following the outbreak of war in Afghanistan, when it was the only channel to cover the war live, from its office there.

Fighting has flared up again, just hours after a ceasefire ended in the Syrian city of Aleppo. It is claimed Syrian government forces have been battling rebels north of the city. The fighting was apparently focused around the rebel-held Handarat area. There was no immediate word on an extension of the truce, brokered by the US and Russia. Meanwhile, it is reported that an aid convoy has been refused entry to Daraya, a suburb of Damascus besieged by pro-government forces. President-elect Donald Trump has turned the DC foreign policy community on its head with his desire for a new opening of relations with Russia and a Syrian policy that favors working with the Syrian government instead of supporting opposition groups, having said in reference to such groups that “we don’t know who they are” and “they’re probably worse than Assad.” RT America’s Alexey Yaroshevsky has more. Members of the Syrian opposition groups seeking to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad renewed their support for US President Barack Obama's plan for military strikes on Tuesday. Speaking in Washington, the Representative to the US and UN for the Syrian National Council, Najib Ghadbiam, told reporters the reason for the recent flurry of diplomatic activity over Syria only came about after President Obama threatened to use military force. "When we see the president finally introduce (referring to plan to strike Syria militarily), you started to see progress. That's why we believe this should go onto the very end. We urge members of the House to support the president in this effort. We urge the US public to support the president," he added. Ghadbiam said on the issue of support for US stri...
Syria's political and armed opposition groups have set out the most detailed plans to date for a political transition to end five years of war. The High Negotiations Committee met Boris Johnson in London and called for a ceasefire, six months of negotiations with President Bashar al-Assad and the formation of a new unity government. But what hope for their demand for a transition from what they call state terrorism to democratic elections? From Syria we've been sent more highly distressing footage of injuries from inside Aleppo which are contained in our report. They capture the agony of children witnessing the destruction of their family. Jonathan Rugman reports.

Opposition sources say the Syrian government and opposition groups are negotiating a 15-day ceasefire in the Eastern Ghouta region. The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the two sides hope to start the truce as of Thursday morning. It said the Jaish al-Islam, which is a major armed group in Eastern Ghouta, is the main negotiating partner on the opposition side. Earlier this year, the Syrian government hammered out a six-month truce with the opposition groups in Zabadani, on the border with Lebanon, as well as two villages in northwest Syria.
