A civil society campaign is one that is intended to mobilize public support and use democratic tools such as lobbying in order to instigate social change. Civil society campaigns can seek local, national or international objectives. They can be run by dedicated single-issue groups such as Baby Milk Action, or by professional non-governmental organisations (NGOs), such as the World Development Movement, who may have several campaigns running at any one time. Larger coalition campaigns such as 2005's Make Poverty History may involve a combination of NGOs.
Effective campaigning can sometimes achieve much more than good works or giving to charity. For example, the Jubilee 2000 debt campaign persuaded G7 governments to cancel $100 billion of debt owned by poor countries, releasing more money for development than 1,000 years of Christian Aid weeks. In the UK, ASH (Action on Smoking and Health)’s campaign for a ban on smoking in public places in 2006 saved over 2,000 lives and billions of pounds a year. The Empty Homes Agency is working with UK local authorities to bring thousands of properties into use as a result of a successful amendment to the UK Housing Act 2004.

Neil Percival Young,OC,OM (born November 12, 1945) is a Canadian singer-songwriter who is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of his generation.
Young began performing as a solo artist in Canada in 1960, before moving to California in 1966, where he co-founded the band Buffalo Springfield along with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay, and later joined Crosby, Stills & Nash as a fourth member in 1969. He forged a successful and acclaimed solo career, releasing his first album in 1968; his career has since spanned over 40 years and 34 studio albums, with a continual and uncompromising exploration of musical styles. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website describes Young as "one of rock and roll’s greatest songwriters and performers". He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame twice: first as a solo artist in 1995, and second as a member of Buffalo Springfield in 1997.
Young's work is characterized by his distinctive guitar work, deeply personal lyrics and signature alto or high tenor singing voice. Although he accompanies himself on several different instruments, including piano and harmonica, his idiosyncratic electric and clawhammer acoustic guitar playing are the defining characteristics of a varyingly ragged and melodic sound. While Young has experimented with differing music styles, including swing and electronic music throughout a varied career, his best known work usually falls into two primary styles: acoustic (folk and country rock) and electric (amplified hard rock, very often in collaboration with the band Crazy Horse). Young has also adopted elements from newer styles such as alternative rock and grunge. His influence on the latter caused some to dub him the "Godfather of Grunge".

Crazy Horse (Lakota: Tȟašúŋke Witkó (in Standard Lakota Orthography), literally "His-Horse-Is-Crazy" or "His-Horse-Is-Spirited"; ca. 1840 – September 5, 1877) was a Native American war leader of the Oglala Lakota. He took up arms against the U.S. Federal government to fight against encroachments on the territories and way of life of the Lakota people, including leading a war party at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in June 1876.
After surrendering to U.S. troops under General Crook in 1877, Crazy Horse was fatally wounded by a military guard while allegedly resisting imprisonment at Camp Robinson in present-day Nebraska. He ranks among the most notable and iconic of Native American tribal members and has been honored by the U.S. Postal Service with a 13¢ Great Americans series postage stamp.
Sources differ on the precise year of Crazy Horse's birth, but they agree he was born between 1840 and 1845. According to a close friend, he and Crazy Horse "were both born in the same year at the same season of the year", which census records and other interviews place at about 1845.Encouraging Bear, an Oglala medicine man and spiritual adviser to the Oglala war leader, reported that Crazy Horse was born "in the year in which the band to which he belonged, the Oglala, stole One Hundred Horses, and in the fall of the year", a reference to the annual Lakota calendar or winter count. Among the Oglala winter counts, the stealing of 100 horses is noted by Cloud Shield, and possibly by American Horse and Red Horse owner, as equivalent to the year 1840-41. Oral history accounts from relatives on the Cheyenne River Reservation place his birth in the spring of 1840. On the evening of his son's death, the elder Crazy Horse told Lieutenant H. R. Lemly that his son "would soon have been thirty-seven, having been born on the South Cheyenne river in the fall of 1840".

Former chair of the NZ Māori Council, Sir Graham Latimer has died. The Ngāti Kahu rangatira was 90 and dies after years of ill health. He was an influential leader and was widely known for challenging the Crown. He was chair of the New Zealand Māori Council from 1973 until the 1990's. During his heyday he filed claims for fisheries, forestry, broadcasting and other areas important to Māori. He was involved in many boards including Te Ohu Kai Moana, Te Papa Tongarewa and was one of the inaugural members of the Waitangi Tribunal. -

Leaving the EU would allow the UK to get net migration under 100,000 - a promise PM David Cameron has not been able to keep, Michael Gove has said. Asked by ITV's Robert Peston if that meant cutting EU and non-EU migration, the justice secretary said: "Yes". But he said it could not be done by 2020: "I wouldn't set a time limit for it but the ambition would be to bring it down to tens of thousands". Mr Cameron insists his target can be achieved with Britain in the EU. Annual net migration reached 333,000 in 2015, according to Office for National Statistics estimates. Mr Cameron insists his target can be achieved with Britain in the EU.
Annual net migration reached 333,000 in 2015, according to Office for National Statistics estimates.
The increase has largely been caused by a surge in immigration from central and southern EU states and fewer people emigrating, but more people are still arriving from outside the EU to take up jobs.
'Fairer'
The figure for EU-only net migration was 184,000, equalling its record high, and 188,000 for non-EU.
Vote Leave has proposed extending the points-based system that currently applies to citizens of non-EU countries wanting to work in the UK to EU citizens, if Britain votes to leave in the referendum on 23 June.
The out campaign has said this would be "fairer" to people from Commonwealth countries and other non-EU nations, whose citizens are "discriminated" against under the current system.
But meeting the target of cutting net migration to the "tens of thousands" would mean tighter entry requirements across the board, if immigration continues at its current levels, as Mr Gove appeared to acknowledge in his Peston interview.
The Treasury's economic forecasts are based on continued high levels of immigration - but Mr Gove denied cutting net migration by 70% would damage Britain's prosperity "because at the moment uncontrolled numbers coming in here only depress wages for working people".
He added: "It's also the case that they put a considerable strain on public services, on housing, on the National Health Service, and of course on school places.
"We grew very successfully in the 1980s and the 1990s with immigration in the tens of thousands."
'Escaping recession'
In a Sky TV Q&A; last week, Mr Cameron said he did not "accept" that he would never meet his net migration target, first set in 2010, while Britain remained in the EU.
"I don't accept that. I think it remains the right ambition for Britain."
But he said it would be "madness" to try to control immigration "by trashing our economy and pulling out of the single market".
Meanwhile Mr Gove, former Conservative London mayor Boris Johnson and Labour MP Gisela Stuart have written to Mr Cameron to warn of the risks of remaining in the EU.
In their 2,000-word letter, they claim the eurozone's economic crisis is fuelling the rise in migration, as "millions of people in southern Europe, particularly young people, are giving up hope of their countries escaping recession" and head to Britain in "disproportionate" numbers.
They also claim that problem will "only get worse when countries in the pipeline to join the EU become members in the near future".
The letter also highlights a catalogue of alleged failures by the EU - and warns that eurozone countries "can impose their will and force us to accept laws that are not in our interests".

Geert Wilders is the Dutch anti-immigration and anti-Islam MP. He's the founder of the right wing Party For Freedom.
Next week, Geert Wilders arrives in Australia for a visit that's been a long time in the making. He planned to come here about a year ago and drew early support from Liberal Senator Cory Bernadi who later distanced himself from the idea.
Now he's being sponsored by the anti-Islamic group The Q Society, on a road trip that's sure to fire debate over what constitutes free speech or hate speech.
Geert Wilders joins us now live from The Hague. Thanks for being there.

GEERT WILDERS, LEADER, PARTY FOR FREEDOM: Well, thanks for having me on your show tonight.
TONY JONES: Are you on some sort of global jihad against Islam?
GEERT WILDERS: Indeed. I am more on a global jihad to preserve our freedom. I believe that even though I have nothing against the people or Muslims or anybody for that reason, I believe that Islam and freedom are incompatible. And I believe that the mistakes that we made in Europe in the last decades by allowing so much mass immigration from Islamic countries is a warning that if Australia is not vigilant enough to preserve the freedom, what has happened here might happen to Australia in the next decades as well.
TONY JONES: So very precisely you plan to warn Australian audiences of what you see as the danger of Islamic migration, is that correct?
GEERT WILDERS: Well, yes, I believe that once again, Islam and freedom are incompatible. Islam is according to me, my party, not so much a religion as well as it is a totalitarian ideology. In Islam there is not much room for anything else but Islam.
Look how in societies today where Islam is dominant and prominent, how any non-Islamic person, whether it's a Christian or an apostate or a woman or a critical journalist, how they are treated. This is in a very bad way, often with the death penalty or imprisonment or all those kind of terrible things.
I believe that what with the mass immigration to our free societies, our societies will change, and it will change for the worse. And I'm proud to say you are not a racist or a bigot or anything like that if you say that the Netherlands, as Australia, is a culture based on Christianity, on Judaism, on humanism, and it should not, nor ever will become a society based on Islamic failures. We should fight it, we should stop it, we should be proud of who we are and define what we are not.
TONY JONES: I'm going to pick you up on some of those points in a little while. But what do you actually know in the Islamic community in Australia. What you have heard about what is happening here, and Australian multiculturalism - which it seems to me could be quite different to multiculturalism in Holland?
GEERT WILDERS: Of course that's the case. I'm not saying that it's exactly the same. I know and I also spoke in the United States of America and in Canada and other countries already have good results with immigration, that it cannot be compared everything to Europe.
But I know where we today in Europe have enormous influx of... in the last decades of people from Islamic countries, that our society has changed. That it has worsened for that reason. That unfortunately non-Western immigrants, often Muslims, are over-represented in statistics of crime, of dependency on social benefits, that we have honour killings, that we have genital mutilation, that we have streets where women with headscarves and burqas are not the exception any more. And that it's getting worse.
What I'm trying to do when I visit your beautiful country, Australia, is warn Australians that even though it might not be the case today, learn from the mistakes that we made in Europe: be vigilant and look at Islam for what it really is. Islam is not a religion of peace. Islam is a totalitarian ideology.
The best example is that if any person, any Muslim wants to leave Islam, then the penalty is death. It is not even allowed to leave it. That's why I believe Islam should not be compared with other religions like Christianity or Judaism, but Islam should be compared to other totalitarian ideologies like Communism or Fascism.
TONY JONES: I can tell you for sure there are plenty of Islamic people in Australia who've left the religion without being killed. So what you're saying can't be everywhere. Indeed I suspect what you're talking about is Islamic fundamentalism. Why not restrict your arguments to Islamic fundamentalism or radical Islam - Islamism - why do you include in this broad brush moderate Islam?
