In physics, coherence is an ideal property of waves that enables stationary (i.e. temporally and spatially constant) interference. It contains in fact several distinct concepts, which are limit cases that never occur in reality but allows to understand the physics of waves and has become in particular a very important concept in quantum physics. More generally, coherence describes all properties of the correlation between physical quantities of a single wave, or between several waves or wave packets. One should note at this point that interference is nothing more than the addition, in a mathematical sense, of wave functions. In quantum physics, a single wave can interfere with itself, but this is due to its quantum behavior and is still an addition of two waves (see Young's slits experiment). This implies that constructive or destructive interferences are limit cases, and that waves can always interfere, even if the result of the addition is complicated or not remarkable.
When interfering, two waves can add together to create a wave of greater amplitude than either one (constructive interference) or subtract from each other to create a wave of lesser amplitude than either one (destructive interference), depending on their relative phase. Two waves are said to be coherent if they have a constant relative phase. The degree of coherence is measured by the interference visibility, a measure of how perfectly the waves can cancel due to destructive interference.

Until recently, most research into harnessing the spin degree of freedom (“spintronics”) has focused on either metals or semiconductors while highly disordered materials have remained relatively untouched. Disordered media exhibit drastically different charge transport properties (i.e. through localized states) from crystalline materials such that only rudimentary elements of spin dynamics theory developed in crystalline materials are applicable in the highly disordered regime. New classes of localized spin physics, contingent on spin coherence and spin correlations through large Coulomb/exchange interactions, have been discovered recently in an array of disordered materials with large magneto-responses at room temperature. Instead of being a niche effect, the physics is predicted in a diverse array of systems such as biological compasses, tumor growth, and charge transport through magnetic heterostructures.
I will introduce the field of spintronics broadly and then focus attention on the emerging field of quantum spintronics which examines room temperature phenomena that rely on spin coherence and correlations. The main part of my talk will be about my contributions to this exciting field in two areas that appear to be very dissimilar but actually have a lot in common: light emission in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and the dynamics of spin at the boundary of a normal metal and a ferromagnet. In certain OLEDs that are designed to maximize efficiency, the optical output of the device can change by over 4000% at room temperature! I will explain how such large responses require both disorder and spin coherence of the recombining constituents. I will then demonstrate how the same theoretical framework clarifies a contentious debate regarding spin injection into metals and semiconductors.

Recently, we discovered that there exists a novel exciting photon state realized in the regime of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) emitted by quantum dot based superlumi-nescent diodes (SLDs), which contains ingredients from both spontaneous and stimulated emission. Via a modified new Hanbury-Brown & Twiss experiment, we demonstrated that this new hybrid state of light is simultaneously spectrally broad-band, i.e. incoherent in first order reflected by the large spectral bandwidth and exhibits a laser-like intensity correlation coefficient of 1.33 equivalent to high coherence in second order, thus being at the same time thermal and coherent. In the talk, I shall review and discuss these experimental results and complement them with new experiments based on tailored coherence by applying well-controlled optical feedback onto the SLDs. The experimental findings are finally supported by a theoretical ansatz based on a "phase randomized superposition of Gaussian state modes (PRAG)" description.
These investigations provide both new insight into quantum optics and open new avenues towards improved imaging applications as, e.g. optical coherence tomography.

In the talk, I shall review and discuss these experimental results and complement them with new experiments based on tailored coherence by applying well-controlled optical feedback onto the SLDs. The experimental findings are finally supported by a theoretical ansatz based on a "phase randomized superposition of Gaussian state modes (PRAG)" description.
These investigations provide both new insight into quantum optics and open new avenues towards improved imaging applications as, e.g. optical coherence tomography.

Modern physics has systematically explored finer levels of creation, smaller and smaller time and distance scales, from the classical macroscopic world to the atomic and nuclear levels, culminating in the discovery of one underlying unified field of existence at the basis of all diversity in the universe.
Ancient Vedic science has likewise explored finer and finer levels of mind and matter, culminating in the discovery and direct experience of one unified field of life—the field of transcendental existence, or pure consciousness. This unbounded field of pure knowledge is known as Veda.
Are the unified field and Veda one and the same reality? Both sciences, one ancient and subjective and the other modern and objective, describe manifest creation as an expression of infinite dynamism embedded in the infinite silence of the underlying field. Physics describes this relationship in terms of the unified field and vacuum energy, and Vedic Science in terms of Shiva and Shakti.
Similarly, at every level of manifest creation, these two descriptions of nature’s functioning correspond exactly. Physics describes three superfields giving rise to the five spin types that characterize elementary particles, the resonant frequencies of the unified field and building blocks of creation; Vedic Science speaks of the three Prakritis or Doshas giving rise to the five Mahabhutas that structure the universe.
Moreover, this correspondence extends to the unmanifest level as well—the self-interacting dynamics of the underlying field. The structure of Rk Veda unfolds sequentially from initial wholeness to 8 to 24 to 64 to 192 elaborations. Similarly, superstring theory in physics describes 8 fundamental vibrational modes of the unified field, which unfold sequentially to 24, 64, and 192 degrees of freedom within the field.
This correspondence is intriguing, but how can it be practically applied? The ancient Vedic technologies of consciousness, revived by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, allow anyone to gain direct experiential access to the unified field on the level of consciousness and to apply this holistic experience to all aspects of daily life and living.
The process of transcending—moving from articulated thought (Vaikari) to abstract conceptual thought (Madhyama) to fine feeling (Pashyanti) to pure consciousness, the Self (Atma)—provides the experience of levels of mind at each level corresponding to mathematical structures that have evolved sequentially to describe these more abstract levels of existence.
