The University of Scranton is a private, co-educational Catholic and Jesuituniversity, located in Scranton, Pennsylvania, United States, in the northeast region of the state. The school was founded in 1888 by Most Rev. William O'Hara, the first Bishop of Scranton, as St. Thomas College. It was elevated to university status in 1938, taking the name the University of Scranton. The institution was operated by the Diocese of Scranton, and later the Lasallian Christian Brothers, from 1888 to 1942. In 1942, Bishop William Joseph Hafey invited the Society of Jesus to take charge of the university. Today, The University of Scranton is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and is served by the Scranton Jesuit Community.
The university is composed of three colleges: The College of Arts and Sciences, The Kania School of Management, and The Panuska College of Professional Studies (the College of Graduate and Continuing Education has recently been folded into the colleges of the respective programs).

University of Scranton students volunteered at McKenna Center which serves the area by operating a daytime drop-in center for homeless men, one of two such facilities in downtown Washington.
University of Scranton students traveled to St.Michael's, AZ to assist at St. Michael's Association for Special Education. The mission of St. Michael's is to promote and provide a coordinated, accessible system of quality services for Navajo children and adults with developmental disabilities and for their families.
University of Scranton students assisted at the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago. Mercy Home for Boys and Girls is a long-term residential program for troubled and hurting young men and women, ages 11 to 21. Their fourteen different homes offer each child the structure or independence to work through their problems and to achieve success.
Darlene Miller-Lanning, Ph.D., director of The Hope Horn Gallery, presented a lecture on the iron furnaces of Scranton in conjunction with the gallery's celebration of the 21st anniversary of the furnaces designation as a historic site. The lecture was held on Friday, September 7, 2012 and is part of The Hope Horn Gallery's "Landmarks and Milestones" program lineup for the 2012-2013 year, celebrating significant dates and architecture in the region.

Full game of the Scranton Royals' 68-53 win over the Moravian Greyhounds Wednesday from the Long Center in Scranton as called by Executive Producer Carmine Gemei, Packy Malanga and sideline reporter Nick Mullery. With the win, Scranton improves to 15-5 overall and 8-4 in Landmark Conference play on the season. They are now in third place in the conference and have four conference games and five total games remaining. Full game of the Scranton women's basketball team's 78-57 win over Catholic University Saturday in the Landmark Conference championship from Scranton. With the win Scranton improves to a perfect 27-0 on the season and is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation. The team hosts the first and second round of the NCAA tournament Friday and Saturday. They play Worcester Polytechnic Institute Friday at 7 p.m. and if they win that game they play Saturday at 5 p.m. in the second round for a spot in the Sweet 16.

This was head coach Colleen Pivirotto's 100th win. The team now advances to play top-seeded Catholic in a rematch of last year's championship which Catholic won 1-0. Scranton travels to Washington, D.C. to play for it all at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The University of Scranton conferred nearly 900 bachelor's and associate degrees at its undergraduate commencement on June 1 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre. The University of Scranton's Kania School of Management announced a new Nonprofit Leadership Certificate program that will serve to develop executives and directors to guide these organizations in the future. The program, which is now accepting applications for the fall 2017, will combine rigorous academics with a mentorship and an experiential learning component.
