In 1951, arranger for the Mantovani orchestra, Ronald Binge came up with the "cascading strings" effect which rocketed the orchestra to million-selling stardom.
Two songs composed by Ernö Rapée and Lew Pollack were issued on both sides of a Decca 78 rpm shellac and became a sensation for Annunzio Mantovani (1905-1980). The most popular song was 'Charmaine', but this was actually the 'B' side of the record, the 'A' side going to 'Diane'.
These tracks are the original mono recordings from Decca F.9696, but these songs, especially 'Charmaine, have been issued on 45 rpm and 12 inch LP many times.

NOTE: Ernö Rapée (or Erno Rapee) (b. 1891 in Budapest, Hungary -- d. NYC 1945) American virtuoso pianist and symphonic conductor, the head conductor of the Radio City Symphony Orchestra. Rapée is also remembered for popular songs that he wrote in the late 1920s for the silent films. In 1926 he collaborated with composer Lew Pollack on "Charmaine" for the film What Price Glory? (1926), "Diane" for the Fox Film production, Seventh Heaven (1927), and "Marion" for the Fox production 4 Devils (1928).
Rapée studied as a pianist and later conductor at the Royal National Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. Later, he was assistant conductor to Ernst von Schuch in Dresden. After a tour of America as a guest conductor, he began performing at the Rialto Theater in New York, where he began composing and conducting for silent films. Following positions at the Rialto and Rivoli theaters, he was hired by Samuel "Roxy" Rothafel as the musical director of the Capitol Theatre's orchestra in New York. Rapée's next move was to Philadelphia, where he conducted an orchestra at the Fox Theatre. After his tenure at the Fox, Rapée went on to international success in Berlin with an orchestra at the UFA Theater. While there he was invited to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1926, he returned to America and began an engagement at the Roxy Theatre in New York. In March 1927 he directed the 110-player Roxy Symphony Orchestra. (At the time this was world's largest permanent orchestra). Millions of listeners heard his symphonic concerts over the air on Sunday afternoon during The Roxy Hour radio broadcasts.In 1932, Rapée reached the apex of his career as the musical director and head conductor of the symphony orchestra at Roxy Rothafel's new Radio City Music Hall, a position Rapée held until his death in 1945, in New York City, from a heart attack.

Ernö Rapée
Ernö Rapée (or Erno Rapee) (4 June 1891 – 26 June 1945) was one of the most prolific American symphonic conductors in the first half of the 20th Century. His most famous tenure was that of the head conductor of the Radio City Symphony Orchestra, the resident orchestra of the Radio City Music Hall, whose music was heard by millions over the air.
A virtuoso pianist, Rapée is also remembered for popular songs that he wrote in the late 1920s as photoplay music for silent films. When not conducting live orchestras, he supervised film scores for sound pictures, compiling a substantial list of films on which he worked as composer, arranger or musical director.
Biography
Rapée was born in Narva, Estonia and later on moved to Budapest, Hungary where he studied as a pianist and later conductor at the Royal National Hungarian Academy of Music. Later, he was assistant conductor to Ernst von Schuch in Dresden. As a composer, his first piano concerto was played by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Vienna, and after a tour of America as a guest conductor, began performing at the Rialto Theater in New York as assistant to Hugo Riesenfeld, where he began composing and conducting for silent films.

Lew Pollack
Lew Pollack (June 16, 1895 – January 18, 1946) was a song composer active during the 1920s and the 1930s.
Pollack was born in New York. Among his best-known songs are "Charmaine" and "Diane" with Ernö Rapée, "Miss Annabelle Lee", "Two Cigarettes in the Dark", "At the Codfish Ball" (featured in the Shirley Temple movie "Captain January" with Buddy Ebsen, and later the title of a Mad Men television episode), and Go In and Out The Window, now a children's music standard. He also collaborated with Paul Francis Webster, Sidney Clare, Ned Washington and Jack Yellen, amongst others. In 1914 he wrote "That's a Plenty", a rag that became an enduring Dixieland standard. He died in Hollywood.
Recognition
Lew Pollack was elected to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.

Sound recording and reproduction
Sound recording and reproduction is an electrical or mechanical inscription and re-creation of sound waves, such as spoken voice, singing, instrumental music, or sound effects. The two main classes of sound recording technology are analog recording and digital recording. Acoustic analog recording is achieved by a small microphone diaphragm that can detect changes in atmospheric pressure (acoustic sound waves) and record them as a graphic representation of the sound waves on a medium such as a phonograph (in which a stylus senses grooves on a record). In magnetic tape recording, the sound waves vibrate the microphone diaphragm and are converted into a varying electric current, which is then converted to a varying magnetic field by an electromagnet, which makes a representation of the sound as magnetized areas on a plastic tape with a magnetic coating on it. Analog sound reproduction is the reverse process, with a bigger loudspeaker diaphragm causing changes to atmospheric pressure to form acoustic sound waves. Electronically generated sound waves may also be recorded directly from devices such as an electric guitar pickup or a synthesizer, without the use of acoustics in the recording process other than the need for musicians to hear how well they are playing during recording sessions.

An orchestra (/ˈɔːrkᵻstrə/ or US /ˈɔːrˌkɛstrə/; Italian: [orˈkɛstra]) is a large instrumental ensemble used in classical music that contains sections of string (violin, viola, cello and double bass), brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. The term orchestra derives from the Greek ὀρχήστρα, the name for the area in front of an ancient Greek stage reserved for the Greek chorus. The orchestra grew by accretion throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, but changed very little in composition during the course of the 20th century.

However, Desmond Carrington on his BBC Radio 2 programme marked the song's writing as being in 1913. The song was originally in waltz time, but later versions were in common time. The song was originally composed for the 1926 silent movie What Price Glory?, and most notably, the best-selling version, recorded by Guy Lombardo & his Orchestra, spent seven weeks at the #1 position in 1927. It was also featured in the movie Two Girls and a Sailor. It was recorded by the Harry James orchestra in 1944. Diane / Charmaine - Ernö Rapée / Lew Pollack - Mantovani And His Orchestra
In 1951, arranger for the Mantovani orchestra, Ronald Binge came up with the "cascading strings" effect which rocketed the orchestra to million-selling stardom. Two songs composed by Ernö Rapée and Lew Pollack were issued on both sides of a Decca 78 rpm shellac and became a sensation for Annunzio Mantovani (1905-1980). The most popular song was 'Charmaine', but this was actually the 'B' side of the record, the 'A' side going to 'Diane'. These tracks are the original mono recordings from Decca F.9696, but these songs, especially 'Charmaine, have been issued on 45 rpm and 12 inch LP many times.

Following positions at the Rialto and Rivoli theaters, he was hired by Samuel "Roxy" Rothafel as the musical director of the Capitol Theatre's orchestra in New York. Rapée's next move was to Philadelphia, where he conducted an orchestra at the Fox Theatre. After his tenure at the Fox, Rapée went on to international success in Berlin with an orchestra at the UFA Theater. While there he was invited to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1926, he returned to America and began an engagement at the Roxy Theatre in New York. In March 1927 he directed the 110-player Roxy Symphony Orchestra. (At the time this was world's largest permanent orchestra). Millions of listeners heard his symphonic concerts over the air on Sunday afternoon during The Roxy Hour radio broadcasts.In 1932, Rapée reached the apex of his career as the musical director and head conductor of the symphony orchestra at Roxy Rothafel's new Radio City Music Hall, a position Rapée held until his death in 1945, in New York City, from a heart attack.

"Charmaine" is a popular song written by Ernö Rapée, with lyrics by Lew Pollack. The song was written in 1926 and published in 1927. However, Desmond Carrington on his BBC Radio 2 programme marked the song's writing as being in 1913.
The song was originally in waltz time, but later versions were in common time.
The song was originally composed for the 1926 silent movie What Price Glory?, and most notably, the best-selling version, recorded by Guy Lombardo & his Orchestra, spent seven weeks at the #1 position in 1927. It was also featured in the movie Two Girls and a Sailor. It was recorded by the Harry James orchestra in 1944.
An instrumental version arranged by Ronald Binge and performed by the Mantovani orchestra was his first hit on the United States charts in 1951. This recording was released by London Records as catalog number 1020. It first reached the Billboard charts on November 9, 1951 and lasted 19 weeks on the chart, peaking at #10.

"Charmaine" is a popular song written by Ernö Rapée, with lyrics by Lew Pollack. The song was written in 1926 and published in 1927. However, Desmond Carrington on his BBC Radio 2 programme marked the song's writing as being in 1913.
The song was originally in waltz time, but later versions were in common time.
The song was originally composed for the 1926 silent movie What Price Glory?, and most notably, the best-selling version, recorded by Guy Lombardo & his Orchestra, spent seven weeks at the #1 position in 1927. It was also featured in the movie Two Girls and a Sailor. It was recorded by the Harry James orchestra in 1944.
An instrumental version arranged by Ronald Binge and performed by the Mantovani orchestra was his first hit on the United States charts in 1951. This recording was released by London Records as catalog number 1020. It first reached the Billboard charts on November 9, 1951 and lasted 19 weeks on the chart, peaking at #10.

The plot of this film is typical of nineteenth-century domestic melodrama, involving the temptations held out to a young farmer, living happily with his wife and child, by a city vamp, who consumes his small financial resources and finally suggests murdering his wife. The iconography of the domestic drama is everywhere. This iconography contributes to the extreme polarities between which the man is pulled, and which are intensified by non - individualisation of the protagonists, designated only as the man, the wife and the woman from the city.
While much of the film's iconography, melodramatic structure and mise en scène looks back to nineteenth-century theatrical melodrama, it also looks forward in style to the full development of cinematic melodrama. Notable in this respect is, first, the influence of German Expressionism that Murnau brings to Hollywood, particularly in the distorted perspectives of the interior sets, the stereotyping of the woman from the city, the dramatisation of typography in the intertitles that spell out the murder plot, the split screen, superimpositions and dissolves that link the woman and the city; second, Murnau's development of the moving camera (for instance, to bring the young farmer to the city woman on the marshes) and the long-take, deep-focus tracking shot that allows us to travel with the young couple on the trolley from lakeside to city are part of the externalisation of emotion into cinematic mise en scène as the hallmark of full-blown Hollywood melodrama in the 1940s and 1950s.
Finally, the film's use of sound marks its transitional status. For while it utilises a synchronous soundtrack, it fulfils the nineteenth-century melodramatic ideal of reducing dialogue in favour of music and pictorial mise en scène, adding only a few expressive sound effects.
