The Australian Press Council was established in 1976 and is responsible for promoting good standards of media practice, community access to information of public interest, and freedom of expression through the media.

The Press Council is also the principal body with responsibility for responding to complaints about Australian newspapers, magazines and associated digital outlets.

Press Freedom Medal
The Council will honour two courageous individuals by awarding them the Press Freedom Medal as part of the proceedings of its 40th Anniversary Conference in May 2016. Read a media release.

Adjudications
The latest adjudications concern a complaint by a West Australian MLA regarding an article in Perth Now about his expenses and one about unauthorised use of an image of children in The Queensland Times.
