MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's offense broke out.
The Beavers hit 12 of 23 3-pointers and shot 50.8 percent from the field to earn a 97-89 win over St. Cloud State in NSIC men's basketball Saturday in front of 1,367 fans at the Minot State Dome.
It was an extra special night for senior forward Thomas Korf (St. Cloud, Minn.) as he knocked down 5 of 6 triples, scored 19 points in a win against his hometown college and passed 1,000 career points in his four-year career. He is the 14th MSU player to reach the milestone in school history.
"Great game for TK," said MSU head coach Matt Murken. "He's really a self-made player. He used to be a good shooter, now he's a great shooter and can do some other things off the bounce. He's turned into a good defender. The first meeting I ever had with him I talked about how bad he was at defense and now he's turned into our best team defender. I'm really proud of him. His hard work is unparalleled."
MSU (10-10 overall, 5-9 NSIC) stretched an impressive 14-point lead at 33-19 into what looked like a potential blowout with a 7-0 run sparked by Korf. He nailed a 3-pointer and hit two free throws and Lamont Prosser (Sr., F, Fort Wayne, Ind.) knocked down two more free throws for a 40-19 edge with 3:42 to play in the half.
SCSU (11-9, 7-7) made a run late in the half to get it to a 13-point MSU lead at halftime. And, the Huskies never went away in the second half either, cutting the halftime lead to under 10 multiple times, including getting it to six at 75-69 on three free throws by Jordan Poydras with just over five minutes to play. Poydras led all scorers with 31.
But MSU had another run in them as Everett Robinson (Sr., G, Grand Junction, Colo.) hit a free throw, a driving layup and a 3-pointer around another Korf triple to push the lead back to double figures with 2:39 to go.
Robinson was brilliant offensively as he mixed in two 3-pointers, 5 of 8 free throw shooting and 10 of 16 from the field for a career-high 27 points to go along with seven rebounds, three steals, two blocks and an assist.
"I liked our energy the whole game, especially early. Everett is a big key to that. He's a big energy player – he loves playing the game," Murken said. "He got off to a great start and I think that was kind of key to get off to that good start tonight. Obviously I feel like we've been playing some good basketball, but we've come up a little short our last few games so it helps to get off to a good start and get a little bit more bounce in your step."
Three other Huskies' players reached double figures with Eddie Alcantara scoring 15 and Connor Niehaus and Donnell Cegers 12 apiece in the loss.
Michael Pelo (Jr., G, Charleston, Utah) hit three more 3s and went 6 for 6 from the line for 17 points and Tyler Rudolph (Fr., F, Bismarck, N.D.) and Prosser each scored 11 for MSU. Rudolph finished with six rebounds. Minot State had a huge edge in bench points as the Beavers outscored SCSU 32-12 with Pelo, Rudolph and Winston Williams (Jr., F, Plainfield, Ill.) combined for the 32.
MSU finished with 19 assists on the night as Dominique McDonald (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) finished with eight assists and Nathan Mertens (So., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) had five rebounds, five points and four assists.
MSU continues its homestand with two games at the Dome next weekend.

MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University built a 21-point lead in the second half, but had to hold off a couple of runs by Dickinson State late to finish with an 83-76 win in nonconference NCAA Division II men's basketball Tuesday at the MSU Dome.
The Beavers made enough plays and hit enough free throws to fend off the Blue Hawks to run their winning streak to three games this season and to three games in the series that dates back to the 1920s.
"We had great rhythm, great movement of the ball and delivered our passes on time and on target in the first half," said MSU head coach Matt Murken. "We made things look easy at times with proper ball movement. But we went away from that a little in the second half and quit doing some of those things. It looked a lot tougher in the second."
MSU (4-1 overall) pushed a 46-28 halftime lead into a 21-point margin twice in the first five minutes of the second half. The first time came on a 3-pointer by Michael Pelo (Jr., G, Charleston, Utah) and the second just two possessions after on a jumper by Dominique McDonald (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) with 15:11 to play in the game.
"We controlled their man-to-man defense pretty well, but they switched to that zone and switched up the tempo," Murken said.
The aforementioned zone helped the Blue Hawks (3-7 overall) to whittle the lead down to as low as five, both times on points by Tevin Russell, over the next 14 minutes.
The Beavers, however, hit 5 of 6 free-throws in the final 2:22 in the game and got a big jumper from Thomas Korf (Sr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.) with 1:25 to go. Korf was nearly unstoppable in the first half, scoring 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting on 3-pointers and led all players with 25 points.
"It was great execution from our sets," Murken said of Korf's first half. "Some of the sets were called from the bench and some from our point guards. We looked for Thomas in transition and made the extra pass to get him some open looks."
While Korf had a big offensive night, fellow senior Everett Robinson (G, Grand Junction, Colo.) had arguably his best game as a Beavers, earning his first double-double with 14 rebounds, 12 points and added four assists.
"Everett had a big double-double for us. He is always high energy and seems to make the right play more often than not," said Murken. "He is still learning our system, but he was very good for us tonight."
Russell paced the Blue Hawks with 16 points, while Connor Donaldson ended with 15 points and five rebounds. Jacob Grondrezick scored 14 points and Mackenson Odenier finished with eight rebounds, seven points and four blocks in the loss.
Along with Korf and Robinson, McDonald added 13 points, four assists, four rebounds and two steals for the Beavers. Pelo and Winston Williams (Jr., F, Plainfield, Ill.) also scored 13 points each as the Beavers put five players in double figures.
The Beavers will move into Northern Sun play this weekend as they travel to the University of Mary for a 6 p.m. tipoff at the McDowell Activities Center.

MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University had to shake off a slow start and fend off a hot-shooting Bemidji State team.
In the end the Beavers did just that, pulling away from BSU with superior balance and a career night from surging freshman Tyler Rudolph (F, Bismarck, N.D.) to defeat Bemidji 84-76 to earn a weekend sweep in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball home finale Saturday at the Minot State Dome.
"I thought the first half they (BSU) definitely played harder than us," said MSU head coach Matt Murken. "e didn't compete as hard as we needed to to win in this league. We have pretty mature guys and usually they believe me when I tell them we need to play harder.
"Second half, I thought we out-competed them for the most part. We're not a team that's good enough to just go out there and float around. We've got to play a little bit mean and a little bit nasty."
MSU (14-12 overall, 9-11) pulled to within a half game of Minnesota Duluth for the fourth and final home 38-32 at Northern State in a late start – next week in the regular season's final week.
The Beavers trailed Bemidji State (8-16, 4-16) by five at the break as BSU hit seven 3-points as part of its 39 points. MSU, meanwhile, woke up from a slow start to shoot a respectable 53 percent in the first half, but sizzled in the second half. MSU hit 16 of 23 shots after the break, including 5 of 8 3-pointers and went 13 for 14 from the line in the win.
Rudolph and Lamont Prosser (Sr., F, Fort Wayne, Ind.) helped Minot State to a 32-22 advantage in the paint as the duo combined for 37 points. Rudolph was all over the court as he finished with a block and a steal to go along with his first career double-double, scoring a team-high 22 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
"Tyler's really helped us since he got healthy and got back," Murken said. "He's a tough nut. He plays hard, he likes to compete – he likes to practice. He's got a chance to be a good player just because he works hard. I thought he gave us a great spark today – had some rebounds, hit some big shots."
BSU finished with 12 3-pointers in the game, but went 5 for 11 in the second half.
On the MSU end, a 3-pointer proved to be one of the biggest points in the game as well as senior Thomas Korf (F, St. Cloud, Minn.) drilled a 3 from the wing to give MSU a 71-64 lead late in the game.
BSU had four in double figures as Christian Pekarek led all scorers with 24 points. He hit four 3-pointers and added five rebounds in the loss. Irvin Womack added three 3s and scored 15, while Elrod Clayton knocked down three more triples and 11 points.
Prosser finished with 15 points, three blocked shots and two rebounds for MSU. Korf added 14 points, four steals, a rebound and an assist, while Everett Robinson scored 13 points and added six rebounds, two assists. Finishing out the Beavers in double figures was Nathan Mertens (So., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) who had 10 points and dished out five assists.
"It's a great group. They are three guys who have scored over 1,000 points in their careers, but the thing that's been the biggest for them is they really believe in our program," Murken said of his senior class. "TK's (Korf) believed since the three years we've been here, Everett's believed for the year and a half that he's been here and Lamont's believed for the year that he's been here.
"When you tell them they need to do something – they listen. They don't always like it, but they do what you ask them and that's great senior leadership. I love those guys, because they've worked hard and made us better as a program."
The Beavers square off with St. Cloud State Friday and then take on the Bulldogs of UMD Saturday on the road.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minot State University survived a roller coaster ride down the stretch.
The Beavers came back from a 12-point deficit in the second half to force overtime, only to have a basket waived off at the end of the first overtime, to eventually pull away for a 99-91 double overtime win at Concordia-St. Paul Friday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball at the Gangelhoff Center.
Minot State (12-11, 7-10 NSIC) outscored the Golden Bears (14-8, 10-6) 14-6 in the extra session, mainly behind free throws by Thomas Korf (Sr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.). Korf hit 9 of 10 free throws in the game and was a perfect 4 of 4 in the second overtime to score a game-high 26 points. MSU improved to 1-1 in double overtime games and is 2-1 in extra session contests this year.
The Beavers looked to have the win in overtime as Dominique McDonald (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) found Tyler Rudolph (Fr., F, Bismarck, N.D.) who scored at the buzzer, but the play was waived off on an instant replay. It turned out the Golden Bears capped a 5-0 run in the final 30 seconds to force a second overtime.
"We are starting to believe in one another, we are learning how to win, and I'm impressed in the belief and effort," said MSU head coach Matt Murken. "I thought the shot (at the end of OT by Rudolph) was late, but told them we have outplayed them over the last nine minutes and we will outplay them over the next five."
It was all MSU after the three minute mark in the second overtime as MSU held CU to just six points. Meanwhile, the Beavers were stellar from the line in the second overtime, hitting 7 of 8 to pull away.
"We had chances to put them away, but they kept coming," Murken said. "It was a great game to watch and a great win. Thomas missed a couple open 3s, but he hit some big ones when they counted and hit those free throws in overtime when we needed them."
MSU outshot CU 47.1 percent to 37.7 percent and outscored the Golden Bears 42-24 from beyond the arc, but Concordia-St. Paul finished with 16 offensive rebounds. The rebound total was largely in CU's favor early, but it tightened up late as it ended with just a 46-45 margin in favor of the home team.
The game was tight most of the way until a little run late in the first half and extended into the second half by the Golden Bears. They turned a 46-41 halftime lead into a 60-48 lead on a tip in by Nuni Omot with 13:20 to play in the game.
MSU countered with a Rudolph jumper, a Michael Pelo (Jr., G, Charleston, Utah) 3-pointer and another Rudolph layup to shave the lead to 60-55 three minutes later and it remained close the rest of the game.
Concordia-St. Paul had four in double figures led by Terez VanPelz with 22 points, five rebounds and five assists. Josh Monry earned a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Omot added 18 points and five rebounds for the Golden Bears.
Korf was joined in double figures by four other Beavers. McDonald had 20 points, including a huge 3 early in the second overtime, and added seven assists and four rebounds. Lamont Prosser (Sr., F, Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Pelo both scored 12 points, while Rudolph added 11.
Robinson finished with just six points on offense, but pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds and added five assists in the win.
"Everett hasn't played very well in the last three games and he will tell you as much," Murken said. "But he continues to play hard, you don't question that, and he did a lot of little things for us tonight."
MSU will have another tough road game as they travel to Minnesota State Saturday to face the Mavericks who received votes in the latest coaches poll at 6 p.m. in Mankato, Minn.

ST.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Minot State University went back and forth with Northern State until a small dry spell offensively midway through the second half spelled doom for MSU as the Wolves pulled away from a 83-72 win in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference men's basketball Saturday at Wachs Arena.
The Beavers (5-3 overall, 1-2 NSIC) held a 45-44 lead on a 3-pointer by Dominique McDonald (Jr., G, Raleigh, N.C.) five minutes into the second half and McDonald tied the game at 55 with just 10:19 to play.
But Northern State (8-1, 2-1) went on a 13-2 run capped by pair of free throws by Tydan Storrusten for a 68-57 in just four minutes of play.
"At this point in the season, it is all about improvement and getting better," said MSU head coach Matt Murken. "It's such a long season, so you have to keep getting better, keep improving. I thought tonight we did a better job of playing to our strengths."
Minot State did not go away as they cut the lead to just four at 72-68 on a jumper by Winston Williams (Jr., F, Plainfield, Ill.) with less than three minutes to go, but the Beavers couldn't get closer at Storrusten hit two more free throws and Mitch White pushed the Wolves lead to 77-68 with a 3-pointer to close out MSU.
The Beavers were much better Saturday after falling at No. 19 Minnesota State University Moorhead Friday by 30. MSU led much of the first half and for the first five minutes of the second half. Minot State led by as many as nine, going up 37-28 on a layup by Thomas Korf (Sr., F, St. Cloud, Minn.) late in the first half.
"We were much better tonight overall. It's frustrating to drop two games on the road, but we played better basketball," Murken said. "I thought Dom was really good and Thomas we good for us."
Northern State held off the Beavers with solid free throw shooting, knocking down 9 of 12 in the final five minutes and 23 of 28 free throws in the game.
Storrusten led all scorers with 22 points, hitting 8 of 8 free throws. He also finished with three rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win. DJ Pollard scored 18 points and Seth Bachand paced the Wolves with seven rebounds to go along with seven points.
Minot State was led by McDonald's 16 points. He hit two 3-pointers and finished with three assists and three rebounds. Lamont Prosser (Sr., F, Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds for MSU. Korf hit three 3-pointers for 13 points and Williams added 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Beavers will make their conference home debut Friday and Saturday, taking on the University of Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State at the MSU Dome.
"It's taken a little out of us being on the road so much and traveling so much. Such is life in college basketball," said Murken "But it will be good to be home."
