FRIDAY THE 13TH creator, Sean S. Cunningham talks about the birth of Jason and the classic horror movie franchise in this uncensored interview. The iconic theme song of the slasher movies, his working relationship with Wes Craven on THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, the making of HERE COME THE TIGERS and MANNY’S ORPHANS, and the odd history he had watching ALIEN with O.J. Simpson are all shared in this special episode of The Insiders, hosted by Sebastian Twardosz.

One of today’s most successful and versatile filmmakers, Sean S. Cunningham graduated from Franklin and Marshall College and studied for Master’s degree in drama and film at Stanford University. He began his career managing theater companies around
the country, including productions at New York’s Lincoln Center, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Mineola Theater in Long Island. His first film was a semi- documentary entitled TOGETHER, after which he produced the original Wes Craven cult classic The Last House on the Left. Cunningham went on to direct and produce the phenomenally successful Friday the 13th, featuring iconic villain Jason Voorhees. The film spawned an enormously successful franchise that continues to thrive. Other notable films he’s directed include A Stranger is Watching, Spring Break, The New Kids, and Deep Star Six. Cunningham also produced such films as House I, II, IV, The Horror Show, My Boyfriend’s Back, Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X and the tremendously successful Freddy vs. Jason. He is an executive producer on the recent hit remakes of Friday the 13th and Last House on the Left.

Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day in Western superstition. It occurs when the 13th day of the month in the Gregorian calendar falls on a Friday.
History
The fear of the number 13 has been given a scientific name: "triskaidekaphobia"; and on analogy to this the fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskevidekatriaphobia, from the Greek words Paraskeví (Παρασκευή, meaning "Friday"), and dekatreís (δεκατρείς, meaning "thirteen").
The superstition surrounding this day may have arisen in the Middle Ages, "originating from the story of Jesus' last supper and crucifixion" in which there were 13 individuals present in the Upper Room on the 13th of Nisan Maundy Thursday, the night before his death on Good Friday. While there is evidence of both Friday and the number 13 being considered unlucky, there is no record of the two items being referred to as especially unlucky in conjunction before the 19th century.
An early documented reference in English occurs in Henry Sutherland Edwards' 1869 biography of Gioachino Rossini, who died on a Friday 13th:

Sean S. Cunningham
Sean Sexton Cunningham (born December 1, 1941) is an American film director, producer, and writer.
Education
Cunningham graduated from Franklin and Marshall College and studied for a master's degree at Stanford University.
Career
His first jobs were managing theater companies such as New York's Lincoln Center, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Mineola Theater in Long Island. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Directors Guild of America. Cunningham is best known for creating the Friday the 13th series of horror films, which introduced the fictional killer Jason Voorhees. Of the 12 films in the series, the ones that had Sean's involvement were the original, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, Jason X, Freddy vs. Jason, and the 2009 reboot. He has also produced many horror films, such as the House series and Wes Craven's debut feature, The Last House on the Left. He is the founder and CEO of Crystal Lake Entertainment. Cunningham is set to produce the CW series adaption of Friday the 13th.

13 (thirteen /θɜːrˈtiːn/) is the natural number following 12 and preceding 14.
In spoken English, the numbers 13 and 30 are often confused. When carefully enunciated, they differ in which syllable is stressed: 13 
i/θərˈtiːn/ vs. 30 /ˈθɜːrti/. However, in dates such as 1300 ("thirteen hundred") or when contrasting numbers in the teens, such as 13, 14, 15, the stress shifts to the first syllable: 13 /ˈθɜːrtiːn/.
Strikingly similar folkloric aspects of the number 13 have been noted in various cultures around the world: one theory is that this is due to the cultures employing lunar-solar calendars (there are approximately 12.41 lunations per solar year, and hence 12 "true months" plus a smaller, and often portentous, thirteenth month). This can be witnessed, for example, in the "Twelve Days of Christmas" of Western European tradition.
In mathematics
The number 13 is the sixth prime number, and the smallest emirp (a prime that is a different prime when reversed). It is also a Fibonacci number, a happy number, the third centered square number, and one of only 3 known Wilson primes.

The iconic theme song of the slasher movies, his working relationship with Wes Craven on THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, the making of HERE COME THE TIGERS and MANNY’S ORPHANS, and the odd history he had watching ALIEN with O.J. Simpson are all shared in this special episode of The Insiders, hosted by Sebastian Twardosz.

One of today’s most successful and versatile filmmakers, Sean S. Cunningham graduated from Franklin and Marshall College and studied for Master’s degree in drama and film at Stanford University. He began his career managing theater companies around
the country, including productions at New York’s Lincoln Center, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Mineola Theater in Long Island. His first film was a semi- documentary entitled TOGETHER, after which he produced the original Wes Craven cult classic The Last House on the Left. Cunningham went on to direct and produce the phenomenally successful Friday the 13th, featuring iconic villain Jason Voorhees. The film spawned an enormously successful franchise that continues to thrive. Other notable films he’s directed include A Stranger is Watching, Spring Break, The New Kids, and Deep Star Six. Cunningham also produced such films as House I, II, IV, The Horror Show, My Boyfriend’s Back, Jason Goes to Hell, Jason X and the tremendously successful Freddy vs. Jason. He is an executive producer on the recent hit remakes of Friday the 13th and Last House on the Left.
