Dracula (1977 play)

Dracula is a 1977 Broadway play originally written by Hamilton Deane from the novel of the same name by Bram Stoker. Later revisions to the play were made by John L. Balderston, for the original 1927 Broadway production.

Plot

A charming Transylvanian count named Dracula, who is a vampire, goes out to seduce women for their blood.

Production

The 1977 revival was directed by Dennis Rosa, with sets and costumes by the renowned Edward Gorey. The play opened on October 20, 1977 at the Martin Beck Theatre in New York City, and closed on January 6, 1980 after 925 performances.

The original cast included Frank Langella as Count Dracula (later replaced by Raul Julia), Alan Coates as Jonathan Harker, Jerome Dempsey as Abraham Van Helsing, Dillon Evans as Dr. Seward, Baxter Harris as Butterworth, Richard Kavanaugh as R. M. Renfield, Gretchen Oehler as Miss Wells, and Ann Sachs as Lucy Seward.

The play was produced by Jujamcyn Theaters (under the direction of Richard G. Wolff, President), Elizabeth Ireland McCann, John Wulp, Victor Lurie, Nellie Nugent and Max Weitzenhoffer. Dracula was originally conceived and produced by the Nantucket Stage Company by John Wulp.

Grim is over one hundred and thirty-seven thousand years old (as had been born at the time of the Stone Age) and speaks using a Jamaican accent. The continuity of how Grim got his reaper status and tremendously strong and powerful supernatural powers comes up quite a few times and it is unknown which way he really got his supernatural powers (for example, in The Wrath of the Spider Queen movie, he was elected to his position as the Grim Reaper while he was in middle school; however, in A Grim Prophecy, it is shown that he was the Grim Reaper since his childhood with his parents forcing him to be the Reaper, which is further contradicted in a later episode where he is seen stumbling over his scythe to become Grim Reaper). His long scythe is the source of all of his supernatural and magical abilities, and possesses many magical capabilities and qualities; although he is still capable of using some incredibly powerful magic spells without it, though these instances are quite rare.

Dracula (1979 film)

Dracula is a 1979 American/British horror film directed by John Badham. The film starred Frank Langella in the title role as well as Laurence Olivier, Donald Pleasence and Kate Nelligan.

The film was based on Bram Stoker's novel Dracula, though much of Stoker's original plot was revised to make the film (advertised with the tagline "A Love Story") more romantic. The film won the 1979 Saturn Award for Best Horror Film.

Plot summary

In Whitby, England in 1913, Count Dracula (Frank Langella) arrives from Transylvania via the ship Demeter one stormy night. A sickly Mina Van Helsing (Jan Francis), who is visiting her friend Lucy Seward (Kate Nelligan), discovers Dracula's body after his ship has run aground. The Count visits Mina and her friends at the household of Lucy's father, Dr. Jack Seward (Donald Pleasence), whose clifftop mansion also serves as the local asylum. At dinner, he proves to be a charming guest and leaves a strong impression on the hosts, Lucy especially. Less charmed by this handsome Romanian count is Jonathan Harker (Trevor Eve), Lucy's fiancé.

Fictional history

Originally from a Demon World (魔界, Makai), the normal variety of Horrors, called "Inga Horrors" (é™°æ?‘ã?›ã?©ã?¼, Inga HorÄ?, "Yin-Self Horrors") which are grotesque black-winged skeletal demons. An Inga Horror enters the human world by being attracted to the darkness inside human beings that its kind feed on, using an object as a portal to travel from the Demon World. Those items, called Inga Gates, are objects with large amount of darkness from either playing a role in some sort of naturally accumulated atrocity like mass murder or a traumatic experience left unresolved. There are Inga Gates that are created by someone infusing the object with dark energies. Regardless, all Inga Gates are usually activated when person with inner darkness with the emerging Horror turning that person or any other living thing nearby, into a host body. From there, the Horror "evolves" into a unique form based on the Gate they emerged from with personal tastes and feeding habits. In some cases, instead of taking complete control, an Inga Horror can form a symbiosis with the host to act out the human's dark desires. Regardless, a human is dead the moment an Inga Horror possesses them and what remained of the host follows the Horror in death. Though rare, there are also some unusual Horrors that prefer to possess objects rather than living thing, not having a preference of prey as they consuming whoever comes into close contact one way or another instead. But the rarest Horrors are the ones that assume the form of large beasts without needing a host body, acting only on a primal and indiscriminate urge to feed. As revealed in Guren no Tsuki, Horrors have influenced humanity's myths such as the people of Heian-kyo believing them to be Preta.

Donkey Kong (video game)

Donkey Kong (Japanese: ��キ�コ�グ, Hepburn: Donkī Kongu) is an arcade game released by Nintendo in 1981. It is an early example of the platform game genre, as the gameplay focuses on maneuvering the main character across a series of platforms while dodging and jumping over obstacles. In the game, Mario (originally named Mr. Video but then changed to "Jumpman") must rescue a damsel in distress named Pauline (originally named Lady), from a giant ape named Donkey Kong. The hero and ape later became two of Nintendo's most popular and recognizable characters. Donkey Kong is one of the most important titles from the Golden Age of Video Arcade Games, and is one of the most popular arcade games of all time.

The game was the latest in a series of efforts by Nintendo to break into the North American market. Hiroshi Yamauchi, Nintendo's president at the time, assigned the project to a first-time video game designer named Shigeru Miyamoto. Drawing from a wide range of inspirations, including Popeye, Beauty and the Beast and King Kong, Miyamoto developed the scenario and designed the game alongside Nintendo's chief engineer, Gunpei Yokoi. The two men broke new ground by using graphics as a means of characterization, including cutscenes to advance the game's plot, and integrating multiple stages into the gameplay.

Hammer (film)

Hammer is a 1972 blaxploitation film directed by Bruce Clark. The film was released following the successes of Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song and Shaft, notable 1971 films that popularized black cinema. It starred Fred Williamson as B.J. Hammer. Williamson went on to become a staple of the genre.

Plot

B.J. Hammer is a boxer who rises up the ranks with help from the Mafia. However, Hammer doesn't realize that the help comes with a price: He is asked to throw a fight. Gangsters threaten to harm his girlfriend in an attempt to force him to go through with their plan. Hammer is forced to figure out a way to save his dignity and the life of his girlfriend, who has been kidnapped by gangsters.

Reception and legacy

The movie gained a positive reception. "The Hammer" has become Williamson's official nickname, earned during his time playing professional football. Williamson is also credited as playing "Hammer, the ladies man," in the 1980 martial arts film Fist of Fear, Touch of Death and as "The Hammer" in a 2006 direct-to-video release called Spaced Out.
