From 1988: An ABC 20/20 report by Tom Jarriel (with some commentary from legendary host Hugh Downs) highlighting the crash involving three light CR locomotives and Amtrak's Colonial on the Northeast Corridor on January 4, 1987. The accident was the worst in Amtrak history, up to that date. It was a watershed in American railroading. A direct result was a mandate for random drug and alcohol testing for crews, as well as licensing for locomotive engineers. Engineer Ricky L. Gates served time behind bars and became a pariah for his role in the crash.
Portions were edited out when I originally recorded this, hence some discontinuity.

GLEN BURNIE, Md. — A man is in police custody following a dramatic pursuit in Anne Arundel County. It started when the suspect was being watched as part of a drug investigation.
Rick Ritter has more from police and how the wild chase ended.
Police say the suspect was known to them; he has a long criminal history and is a convicted felon. They say their officers were put in a dangerous situation very quickly.
It’s the video that’s been shared thousands of times in just hours–both Anne Arundel County and state police taking a suspect into custody after a wild pursuit.
Around noon on Wednesday, Anne Arundel County police are watching Antron Bulow — a suspected drug dealer — as part of an investigation in Glen Burnie.
“Convicted violent felon, has priors for assaulting police, for several assaults and for dealing drugs,” said Lt. Ryan Frashure, Anne Arundel County Police Department.
After surveillance detail, police follow the suspect into the area of I-97 and try pulling him over when he starts speeding.
“The individual at that time ignored the officers’ light and sirens behind him and continued driving,” said Frashure.
Anne Arundel cops backed off due to pursuit policy and state police took over.
“It intentionally struck a second state trooper, who was coming to assist,” Frashure said.
Minutes later, the pursuit ends at Aquahart and Oakwood Road.
One video shot by Michael Gosnay shows the suspect crash into another officer’s car and jump out.
“He got out of the car and immediately started running. I mean, you’ve got 29 cops looking at you… where are you going to run?” said Gosnay.
Police say Bulow was resisting arrest–one reason why multiple officers were needed to take him into custody.
Ritter: “Why use that much force when he’s already down on the ground?”
Lt. Frashure: “In those situations, it’s very unclear who has control. Again, this is a subject that’s known to us, he’s a big guy, he’s known to be violent, he’s known to sell drugs and use drugs.”
A wild pursuit police feel was handled appropriately.
Inside the suspect’s car, police say they found crack cocaine.
Anne Arundel County police plan on charging him criminally with the drugs, and state police will charge him with the traffic violations and assault for crashing into a trooper’s car.
Anne Arundel County police say the cell phone video will be reviewed extensively to see if any policies failed.

Chevy Chase
Cornelius Crane "Chevy" Chase (/ˈtʃɛvi/; born October 8, 1943) is an American comedian, actor, and writer. Born into a prominent New York family, Chase worked a plethora of odd jobs before he moved into comedy and began acting with National Lampoon. He quickly became a key cast member in the inaugural season of Saturday Night Live, where his recurring Weekend Update skit soon became a staple of the show.
Chase is well known for his portrayal of the character Clark Griswold in five National Lampoon's Vacation films, and for his roles in comedies including Foul Play (1978), Caddyshack (1980), Seems Like Old Times (1980), Fletch (1985), Spies Like Us (1985), and ¡Three Amigos! (1986). He has hosted the Academy Awards twice (1987 and 1988) and briefly had his own late-night talk show, The Chevy Chase Show. In 2009, he became a regular cast member (Pierce Hawthorne) on the NBC comedy series Community. Chase left the show in 2012, having already filmed most of the episodes in season 4.

Ritter: “Why use that much force when he’s already down on the ground?” Lt. Frashure: “In those situations, it’s very unclear who has control. Again, this is a subject that’s known to us, he’s a big guy, he’s known to be violent, he’s known to sell drugs and use drugs.” A wild pursuit police feel was handled appropriately. Inside the suspect’s car, police say they found crack cocaine. Anne Arundel County police plan on charging him criminally with the drugs, and state police will charge him with the traffic violations and assault for crashing into a trooper’s car. Anne Arundel County police say the cell phone video will be reviewed extensively to see if any policies failed.

VHS Newsreel -- Chase Maryland Amtrak/Conrail Crash 1987
From 1988: An ABC 20/20 report by Tom Jarriel (with some commentary from legendary host Hugh Downs) highlighting the crash involving three light CR locomotives and Amtrak's Colonial on the Northeast Corridor on January 4, 1987. The accident was the worst in Amtrak history, up to that date. It was a watershed in American railroading. A direct result was a mandate for random drug and alcohol testing for crews, as well as licensing for locomotive engineers. Engineer Ricky L. Gates served time behind bars and became a pariah for his role in the crash. Portions were edited out when I originally recorded this, hence some discontinuity. GLEN BURNIE, Md. — A man is in police custody following a dramatic pursuit in Anne Arundel County. It started when the suspect was being watched as part of a drug investigation.
Rick Ritter has more from police and how the wild chase ended.
Police say the suspect was known to them; he has a long criminal history and is a convicted felon. They say their officers were put in a dangerous situation very quickly.
It’s the video that’s been shared thousands of times in just hours–both Anne Arundel County and state police taking a suspect into custody after a wild pursuit.
Around noon on Wednesday, Anne Arundel County police are watching Antron Bulow — a suspected drug dealer — as part of an investigation in Glen Burnie.
“Convicted violent felon, has priors for assaulting police, for several assaults and for dealing drugs,” said Lt. Ryan Frashure, Anne Arundel County Police Department.
After surveillance detail, police follow the suspect into the area of I-97 and try pulling him over when he starts speeding.
“The individual at that time ignored the officers’ light and sirens behind him and continued driving,” said Frashure.
Anne Arundel cops backed off due to pursuit policy and state police took over.
“It intentionally struck a second state trooper, who was coming to assist,” Frashure said.
Minutes later, the pursuit ends at Aquahart and Oakwood Road.
One video shot by Michael Gosnay shows the suspect crash into another officer’s car and jump out.
“He got out of the car and immediately started running. I mean, you’ve got 29 cops looking at you… where are you going to run?” said Gosnay.
Police say Bulow was resisting arrest–one reason why multiple officers were needed to take him into custody.
Ritter: “Why use that much force when he’s already down on the ground?”
Lt. Frashure: “In those situations, it’s very unclear who has control. Again, this is a subject that’s known to us, he’s a big guy, he’s known to be violent, he’s known to sell drugs and use drugs.”
A wild pursuit police feel was handled appropriately.
Inside the suspect’s car, police say they found crack cocaine.
Anne Arundel County police plan on charging him criminally with the drugs, and state police will charge him with the traffic violations and assault for crashing into a trooper’s car.
Anne Arundel County police say the cell phone video will be reviewed extensively to see if any policies failed.

I wanted to make a trip to Brunswick and only Brunswick, so here is a ten hour account of a somewhat normal Friday at the old B&O; yard. The day was like normal, I pulled into the parking lot at the water plant and saw three mother/slug sets and three beautiful CW44AH. I would have stayed longer but I fell sick near the end, and decided to cut it short. Even though I left early, I still managed to catch Q135 and Q415 at a crew change and all the morning MARC as well as a chase to Shenandoah Junction (Where NS came north with a short coal train) to get a empty coal train with a true CW60AH tailing. Another treat was CSXT Q419 with a UP SD70M and a very clean SD40N screaming away heading east to Baltimore. One day when I'm off work I'll make a longer day at the yard but until then, here's my take on a beautiful but hot Friday, July 1st.

June 23rd Storm Chase in Maryland's Upper Eastern Shore
A line of severe thunderstorms moved into Maryland's Eastern Shore during peak heating hours of the afternoon on June 23rd. This severe event produced scattered to widespread tree damage in northern portions of Cecil and New Castle counties, as well as in southern New Jersey. Philadelphia, PA recorded a wind gust to 72 mph while Wilmington, DE recorded a gust to 66 mph as this line moved in. My chase starts out in Elkton, MD heading west on US-40, then north on MD-272 through Zion, MD. After reaching the spot I intended to reach prior to the storms moving in, I turned around, took MD-272 back south to US-40, then took US-40 east to MD-213 south. After taking MD-213 south through Chestertown and Kingstown, I reach MD-577 west and take that back to US-301 northbound. -

Driver Arrested After Truck Chase, Standoff
The company that owns the 18-wheeler reported it stolen, telling police the driver was more than 30 hours overdue for a delivery in Maryland.
"For a still undetermined reason, the driver of the truck made the decision to not stop for our trooper and continued towards Dallas," said Sgt. Lonny Haschel, with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
A transportation industry source tells NBC the driver had also stopped responding to calls from the shipping company.
What's unclear is why.
Haschel said he was not aware if the driver was providing any answers to investigators.
Troopers said Arnold is from Virginia, where state court records show a David Arnold with the same date of birth was convicted of stealing a car almost 20 years ago.
In 1998 he was ordered to serve six years probation for taking a Nissan along with some property from the man who owned the car.
Now, Arnold is accused of making off with a much larger set of wheels.
Two different companies own the tractor and the trailer. Management of those companies did not immediately respond to our calls for comment.
A dispatcher at the company that owns the tractor told NBC Wednesday everyone was tied up dealing with the situation.
Fortunately, the pursuit and ensuing standoff with police ended with no one hurt.
The dog that was riding in the tractor trailer involved the pursuit is safe and was taken to the Greenville Animal Control Shelter.

Awesome Games Done Quick was SpeedDemosArchives's 2nd annual charity marathon which took place from January 6-11, 2011 in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Over $50,000 were raised for the Prevent Cancer Foundation during the event. I was not part of the event (I wish I was), but I felt I had to somehow promote it while it took place.
