"SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket successfully landed upright on solid ground at Cape Canaveral, Florida this evening, after traveling into space and back. It's the first time SpaceX has been able to gently touch down the Falcon 9 post-launch — something the company has been trying to do for the past year. It’s a big first step toward reusable rockets.
This launch was also the first time SpaceX has flown since June, after one of its Falcon 9 rockets exploded en route to the International Space Station. Now this return-to-flight mission has made history — no one else has ever landed a rocket that has gone as deep into space as the Falcon 9."

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will launch Orbcomm communications satellites from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida on December 21.
The Falcon rocket will carry 11 second-generation satellites for the US company Orbcomm into Orbit.
The event will see SpaceX hold its first launch mission since an explosion after liftoff destroyed the rocket and its space station Dragon cargo ship on June 28. The Falcon 9 rocket will fly with upgraded Merlin 1D engines and stretched fuel tanks, which were designed to improve the controlled landing of the rocket’s first stage.

* A Merlin D throttling from 58% to 59%, nicely above the 55% lower limit, giving room to wiggle.
* Constant vertical acceleration, averaging (what I think is) a gentle 6.9 meters/second/second.
* A nicely parabolic altitude graph.
* Nothing new or startling.
A few caveats:
* I am not an engineer. My calculations, detailed below, might be crap.

USA!! USA!! บางคนอุทาน Holy SHIT, we did it!!

Here is a recording of the Spacex Falcon 9 landing of the 1st stage which took place in Cape Canaveral, Florida on Dec 21, 2015. That is huge! Spacex is going green.....or at least as green as they can get. Having rocket boosters that successfully return to earth will have a huge impact to lessen the debris created from space exploration. After many failed attempts, Spacex finally had a successful return of the Falcon 9's first stage rocket booster. That was met with an overwhelming round of cheers in the control room, as you can imagine!!

http://theviralgorilla.com/MOBE
Here is a recording of the Spacex Falcon 9 landing of the 1st stage which took place in Cape Canaveral, Florida on Dec 21, 2015. That is huge! Spacex is going green.....or at least as green as they can get. Having rocket boosters that successfully return to earth will have a huge impact to lessen the debris created from space exploration. After many failed attempts, Spacex finally had a successful return of the Falcon 9's first stage rocket booster. That was met with an overwhelming round of cheers in the control room, as you can imagine!!
I want to take this time to thank Spacex for supplying this video for me to showcase on my YT channel.

Analysis of a hoverslam, SpaceX Falcon 9 stage 1 landing after OrbComm launch, December 2015

What I see:
* A Merlin D throttling from 58% to 59%, nicely above the 55% lower limit, giving room to wiggle.
* Constant vertical acceleration, averaging (what I think is) a gentle 6.9 meters/second/second.
* A nicely parabolic altitude graph.
* Nothing new or startling.
A few caveats:
* I am not an engineer. My calculations, detailed below, might be crap.
* I do not design rockets. My assumptions, detailed below, might be crap.
* I am not a science reporter. My research, detailed below, might be crap.
Dimensions used from http://spaceflight101.com/spacerockets/falcon-9-ft/ :
* Stage 1 height: 41.2 meters
* Stage 1 inert mass: 22,200 kilograms
* Interstage height: 6.75 meters
* Merlin D thrust @ sea level: 756 kilonewtons
* Merlin D throttle range: 55% to 100%
Dimensions used from http://www.parabolicarc.com/2014/10/23/spacex-builds-merlin-1d-engines-10-falcon-9-flights/ :
* 9 Merlin D @ 100% throttle propellant consumption: 540 gallons/second
Dimensions used from various other sources:
* LOX density: 4.32 kilograms/gallon
* RP1 density: 3.03 kilograms/gallon
* LOX:RP1 ratio: 2.56:1
* Acceleration of gravity: 9.80665 meters/second/second
Measurements from the stabilized footage made available by /u/tossha:
* Total return stack height: 414 pixels
* Frames per second: 30
* First frame stack is visible: 59
* Touchdown frame: 268
* Pixel offset at frame 59: 9
* Pixel offset at frame 105: 615
* Pixel offset at touchdown: 1520
Pixel offsets measured from consistent reference points on stack, but not perfectly.
Assumptions made by me:
* Stage 1 lands with fuel reserve of 15 seconds @ 100% single-engine throttle.
* Propellant mass consumed during visible descent: ~850 kilograms (negligible to calculations and ignored)
* Missing mass of interstage, probably negligible to calculations.
* Altitude of stack touchdown: 0 meters
* Velocity of stack touchdown: 0 meters/second (Yay, though it seems to settle then raise a bit)
* LOX:RP1 ratio is by volume, not weight. Possibly wrong, but density change would be insignificant.
* Discernible slight change in altitude curve at frame 105.
Derivations:
* Combined stack height (without legs): 47.95 meters
* Pixels per meter: 8.625
* Time of visible descent: 7.00 seconds
* Single Merlin D @ 100% throttle propellant consumption: 60 gallon/second
* Single Merlin D @ 100% throttle propellant consumption: 237 kilograms/second
* Propellant mass remaining at touchdown: 3561 kilograms
* Total mass of stack at touchdown: 25761 kilograms
*
* Altitude at frame 59: 175.19 meters
* Velocity at frame 59: -49.39 meters/second
*
* Acceleration from frame 59 to 105: 6.85 meters/second/second
* Thrust from frame 59 to 105: 442.7 kilonewtons
* Throttle from frame 59 to 105: 58%
*
* Altitude at frame 105: 104.93 meters
* Velocity at frame 105: -38.43 meters/second
*
* Acceleration from frame 105 to touchdown: 7.04 meters/second/second
* Thrust from frame 105 to touchdown: 447.7 kilonewtons
* Throttle from frame 105 to touchdown: 59%

SpaceX launches Jaso-3 satellite Falcon-9 failed landing on drone ship barge. SpaceX's latest attempt to land a rocket upright on a platform in the Pacific Ocean failed on Sunday. The unmanned mission, powered by a SpaceX rocket, accomplished its primary goal of carrying a satellite into low orbit. But its secondary goal -- to land the rocket upright on a floating platform called a droneship -- did not go as planned.
"First stage on target at droneship but looks like hard landing; broke landing leg," SpaceX tweeted.
SpaceX did not immediately elaborate on what happened. On a webcast, the company had said that the ocean waves were choppy.Sunday's launch was the fourth attempt by Elon Musk's SpaceX to safely land a rocket at sea.
Rockets are the portion of spacecrafts that provide the boost for liftoff, but they're typically discarded after launch. Companies like SpaceX that make rockets are working to perfect landing the rocket safely so they can be reused.
Rockets are expensive. SpaceX rockets cost between $60 million and $90 million. So the ability to reuse them would significantly reduce the cost of space travel.
After three previous failed attempts to land a rocket upright on a platform at sea, SpaceX successfully landed one of its Falcon 9 rockets on land after a launch from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in December.
The successful landing came shortly after Blue Origin -- led by Amazon (AMZN, Tech30) founder Jeff Bezos -- also landed a rocket upright on land.
After Sunday's launch, Bezos congratulated the company on Twitter. The two billionaire CEOs have recently traded barbs on social media about their rockets. SpaceX conducted Sunday's launch, which was made from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, for NASA. The satellite that was launched into space, named Jason-3, will measure ocean levels on the Earth's surface.
"Jason-3 data will be used for monitoring global sea level rise, researching human impacts on oceans, aiding prediction of hurricane intensity, and operational marine navigation," NASA said.
NASA partnered with several other organizations on the project, including two European space agencies. This was the second successful mission SpaceX has carried out since disaster struck in July. That's when SpaceX's rocket exploded shortly after launch, destroying an unmanned spacecraft carrying supplies to the International Space Station.
It returned to space missions in December when the company successfully carried satellites into low orbit in a mission for Orbcomm (ORBC).
wn.com/Spacex Launches Jaso 3 Satellite Falcon 9 Failed Landing On Droneship Barge

On December 21, 2015, a SpaceX Falcon 9 v1.2 rocket successfully launched 11 communications satellites for Orbcomm. This marks the company's return to flight after a faulty strut caused the June 28 explosion of the CRS-7 Falcon 9. This launch was the 20th overall launch of the Falcon 9 family. Another successful event that occurred during this flight was the boostback of the first stage and its eventual landing on Landing Complex 1 at Cape Canaveral. This was SpaceX's first successful landing after two attempts on drone ships landed in failure because of the rocket tipping over on one and losing control.
