How To
Play The
B flat Chord On
Guitar - Breaking-through
Beginning Guitar
Series
Hi there, I’m
Tomas Michaud from
Starland School of
Music and
Real Guitar Awesomeness. This is my breaking through series.
Today, were gonna work on the B flat chord. This is a tough one for beginning guitar players but if done properly it’s not that hard.
Let’s do it.
We’re gonna use a simplest form of B flat that I know but it is very effective so don’t be shy about using the simpler form.
Better to nail this and then move on to bar chords than to just wait until you can do bar chords properly. Now the other thing is you are going to probably need this one anyways so you’re not losing anything. Here’s the B flat. I’m gonna do it this way, I’m gonna make an A chord with my 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers all together on the second fret, this is one way to make a B flat and move it up two frets – A (that’s 2 frets) B flat, half – one fret half step. A one fret, B flat now put your fingers down because we gonna count for that open E, see with A there’s open string there, move everything up one fret so let’s do it one finger at a time.
We’re gonna make the B flat directly. If you have any problems, go back to the A and then push it up and put your 1st finger down 1st fret, 1st string – 2nd, 3rd and 4th finger all together at the same time, that’s on the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd string. I’m leaving the open E do that just much with me. At the 3rd fret, 3 fingers same time.
It’s like you’re making the A, only one fret up.
Now put the 1st finger down, 1st string 1st fret. It’s gonna angle slightly, it’s not gonna be flat square on the fingertip which has no way to press that down and keep it flat but that’s okay actually.
Sometime you put pressure with little angle. Now make sure they’re all sounding. Probably it gonna sound like this at first. It’s okay, that’s the way it is supposed to be, just keep working it adjusting. Your fingers gonna take a little bit sore, just take them down, shake them out (2:30) okay let’s do it again , three fingers – 2nd, 3rd and 4th down and put the 1st finger down 1st string, 1st fret – adjust, look I got my finger, my thumb resting on the back of the neck. This is why
I’ve got good thumb position – sounding better but I’m still deadening out and adjust it. Oh I’m on top of the fret, got to back it up a little bit that’s how you think when you’re learning this – there, it’s clear, okay shake it out.
Let’s try it again, so I do that for a while. You got the idea.
Don’t just jump in the chord progressions.
Work on the chord a little bit maybe for a week, maybe longer.
Okay, we’re gonna do a chord progression now.
Chord progression is the best way to practice, moving from one chord to another, it’s where you really do the work but you gotta get at least a foundation first with the basic fingering that’s why I say work on getting it a little bit before you start doing chord progression so I got the B flat. What’s the good chord do you think to play with the B flat for a progression? Let’s do G, we’re gonna do 4 each chord, B flat sounds good to G. Now I’m using the G with the pinky which is my favourite G and you can see, there’s not much that movement actually. If you do this G, it’s okay you just gonna have to move more. Let’s do it, B flat 4 times-
1, 2, 3 to G - B flat.
Eventually, you wanna get to where all the fingers gonna have at the same time. It takes practice G four times, with the two more progressions together B flat, play it - 2,
3, 4 to G back to B flat and to G.
That’s it for today, thanks for joining me. If you’re watching this anywhere but on my blog possibly YouTube, please go over to my blog. I have link to another video that will show you some more forms of the B flat if you wanna work on some more advanced but also to some other material as well, as well as a little more complete lesson.
Thanks for joining me. See you on the next video
