What Child Is This? / Tune: My Lagan Love, traditional Irish air
Long before Christianity took hold in Scotland and Ireland, the ancient Celts celebrated the Winter Solstice and the coming of light and hope. The echoes of Paganism still resounded in the 13th and 14th centuries, when faithful Scots sang the Vespers of St. Kentigern, Patron Saint of Glasgow. This celebration of Celtic artistic traditions, created by Jeannette Sorrell and Sylvain Bergeron, interweaves selections from the medieval Vespers of St. Kentigern with ancient pagan carols and popular tunes from 17th-century Welsh and Scottish manuscripts for lute and harp.

For 30 years, I’ve been fascinated by all the goofy gimmicks sold by immigrants on the streets of Europe. The flaming Manneken-Pis cigarette lighters, the “How many more minutes of George W. Bush’s presidency are left?” digital countdown clocks, the fluorescent launchers, the click-clack crickets, the selfie sticks. One year it’s tripods and the next its 4-inch cartoon figures that magically dance against a wall. It seems they all have a season and the next year there’s something different. You could fill a museum with them. Lately, a favorite is the blob. These guys are peddling this stuff illegally and are generally camera-shy, but I found a young man in Venice willing to demonstrate his goods on camera. Can you imagine buying this mysterious glob of chemical goo for your child? Yummy!

Venice
Venice (English /ˈvɛnɪs/ VEN-iss; Italian: Venezia [veˈnɛttsja]) is a city in northeastern Italy sited on a group of 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline, between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Venice is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture, and its artwork. The city in its entirety is listed as a World Heritage Site, along with its lagoon.
Venice is the capital of the Veneto region. In 2009, there were 270,098 people residing in Venice's comune (the population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; of whom around 60,000 live in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the mainland), mostly in the large frazioni (roughly equivalent to "parishes" or "wards" in other countries) of Mestre and Marghera; and 31,000 on other islands in the lagoon). Together with Padua and Treviso, the city is included in the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area (PATREVE), with a total population of 2,600,000. PATREVE is only a statistical metropolitan area without any degree of autonomy.

There's Something For Everyone in Venice
For 30 years, I’ve been fascinated by all the goofy gimmicks sold by immigrants on the streets of Europe. The flaming Manneken-Pis cigarette lighters, the “How many more minutes of George W. Bush’s presidency are left?” digital countdown clocks, the fluorescent launchers, the click-clack crickets, the selfie sticks. One year it’s tripods and the next its 4-inch cartoon figures that magically dance against a wall. It seems they all have a season and the next year there’s something different. You could fill a museum with them. Lately, a favorite is the blob. These guys are peddling this stuff illegally and are generally camera-shy, but I found a young man in Venice willing to demonstrate his goods on camera. Can you imagine buying this mysterious glob of chemical goo for your child? Yummy! ...

36 friezes on columns, Doge's Palace/Palazzo Ducale, Venice, Italy
Note that the friezes were higher up than me. As a result, some of the details may have been lost due to the angle I was filming at. When viewing my video, though, I also recommend looking around the middle and up to see the figurines which may be eclipsed by the decoration below them - a feature that they all share. (To make it easier for viewing, I reduced the speed by half, as I was walking while filming each individual column shown.) Note that the friezes were higher up than me. As a result, some of the details may have been lost due to the angle I was filming at. When viewing my video, though, I also recommend looking around the middle and up to see the figurines which may be eclipsed by the decoration below them - a feature that they all share. (To make it easier for viewing, I reduced the speed by half, as I was walking while filming each individual column shown.)
A small thing, too: When I stopped filming after the last column - which may or may not have more decoration on the side that faces the water (there's no way to walk on that, and I didn't feel like going up the bridge - and, even if I had, the frieze would've been too far to capture with my camera) - I went back and looked at everything again without a camera. Because of that I noticed details I didn't see through my camera - for example, the detail of the lace on the crown of one of the queens; that some of the figures are holding birds (in one case, maybe a dog) while one woman has a deer in her lap; also the intricacy of the cross-ties on one woman's shoe (it showed well on my photo, though I don't know if it captured as well on film), etc.
Interestingly, though, the woman on Venezialines said she hadn't noticed the friezes before though she's been in Venice many times. So that's something I would suggest for anyone visiting the Doge's Palace - and that is to look up at the columns that are around two sides of the building to see the beautiful artwork, as well as to walk around them since there are different but related images on every side of the columns (so the images are sequential, though in what order I couldn't say except for one - see later in the next paragraph for those details).
Among the individual stories, you have figures with musical instruments, others with work tools (including one of a woman hammering (or chiseling) what looks like a child but is likely some kind of puppet or doll); the first includes a biblical scene with God reaching from the heavens; some focus on animals (one of different birds, another with fiercer countenances of animals eating other animals, etc.); there's also the romance story that has a clear sequence: (1) a *Romeo and Juliet*-esque balcony scene with the guy courting the girl, (2) standing side by side (possibly holding hands but I'm not 100% sure on this), (3) they're married (she's in a wedding dress with her hand on his head), (4) they're kissing, (5) they're in bed together with a blanket covering them (a sex scene, thus), (6) they're holding their baby between them, (7) their child is still between them but older (but younger than adolescence), (8) finally, a burial scene (at first I thought it was the mother who died, but now I'm not so sure).
Anyway, I'm really glad that I decided to go to Venice! I didn't see a lot outside of the Piazza San Marko (St. Mark's Square), but I really enjoyed these friezes!
