Horse teeth refers to the dentition of equine species, including horses and donkeys. Equines are both heterodontous and diphyodontous, which means that they have teeth in more than one shape (there are up to five shapes of tooth in a horse's mouth), and have two successive sets of teeth, the deciduous ("baby teeth") and permanent sets.
As grazing animals, good dentition is essential to survival, and continued grazing creates specific patterns of wear, which can be used along with patterns of eruption to estimate the age of the horse.
A fully developed horse of around five years of age will have between 36 and 44 teeth. All equines are heterodontous, which means that they have different shaped teeth for different purposes. All horses have twelve incisors at the front of the mouth, used primarily for cutting food, most often grass, whilst grazing. They are also used as part of a horse's attack or defence against predators, or as part of establishing social hierarchy within the herd.
This Friday Zone Field Trip takes us to a local barn to visit with a young horse owner as a vet stops by to check her horse's teeth! Learn about horse teeth, the tools of equine dentistry, and why dental care is so important. Get it straight from the horse's mouth! This segment originally aired as a part of The Friday Zone, a PBS Kids show that airs in southern and central Indiana on WTIU and WFYI. This horse was restrained in our stocks and sedated. It had two loose infected molars causing eating difficulties. The teeth were removed in pieces with the horse standing using our molar forceps. Generally molars are removed in there entirety and in young horses with very large roots this can take several hours, over several days, to achieve. The jaws of the dental forceps are anchored to the clinical crown and the handles are taped with duct tape to ensure the jaws don't come loose. The forceps are then gently wiggled in a side to side horizontal plane for upto several hours if the root is long. In this horse, because the teeth were loose due to dental decay then they were removed relatively quickly. Radiographs were taken after removal to ensure all the tooth root fragments had been rem...

The mouth plays a very important role in a horse's overall health. If you suspect your horse is having a dental problem, contact your veterinarian for help. Some common signs of dental problems are: decreased appetite, becoming head shy, undigested feed in the feces, foul breath, reddened or inflamed gums and reacting negatively to a bit. Lack of dental care can lead to number of problems including: colic, weight loss and issues under saddle. Your veterinarian should examine your horse's teeth every six months to a year.
