Despite the spike in sales, High Streets across Britain were quieter than in recent years with more people than ever choosing to do their shopping from home. A sudden onslaught of bad weather also hindered shoppers' plans, with more travel chaos expected today as snow blankets swathes of the country. It comes after millions flocked to online retailers on Christmas Day, spending an estimated £636million. Shoppers visited nearly shopping websites 150million times throughout the day, an increase of around 25 per cent on Christmas 2013. Boxing Day saw even more sales, with £519,000 being spent every minute online. The stampede in online traffic meant that shops were quieter than in recent years, though hardy bargain hunters eager not to miss out still queued through the night in some cities. 'There is no doubt that Black Friday, related pre-Christmas discounting 'It is now time for the high street and shopping centres to take action in ensuring shoppers continue to spend money with them. And with the cost of living constantly rising, family budgets are being squeezed more than ever. That is why families have less money to spend at retail stores these days.
