In this new video tour of New York City from the series "All Along Broadway" (see the first two episodes: "Wall street" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwx_lomIrMw ) and "Union Square" ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIUXvqrl-Mc ), David Hill from New York Habitat continues his stroll along Broadway and presents Midtown Manhattan and its famous squares: Madison Square, Herald Square and Greeley Square.
Broadway is one of the most famous roads in the world. It runs the length of Manhattan, from its southern tip to the northern tip of the island and continues in the Bronx, crossing many of Manhattan's neighborhoods.
History
The oldest "street" in New York City, Broadway was originally used as a trail by the Native Americans who lived here; later it was used by the Dutch settlers to travel to the northern forests to hunt.
Madison Square
Walking north along Broadway, you will reach a large intersection at Fifth Avenue and 23rd St. which creates a big square. This is Madison Square, named after the 4th U.S. President, James Madison. It was here in 1842 where some of the first amateur baseball games were ever played. They used a vacant lot in the north part of the square (corner of Madison Avenue & 27th Street). Later, the original New York Knickerbocker Baseball club, one of the first professional baseball teams, started right here.
Flatiron or Fuller Building
One of the most beautiful buildings in this square is the Fuller Building, designed by Daniel Burnham in the Beaux-Arts architectural style. It was named "Fuller" after the construction company that erected it in 1902 and it was one of the tallest skyscrapers ever built in New York City as of 1902. It was soon renamed the Flatiron Building because of its triangular shape which resembles a flat iron and gives the name Flatiron District to the area.
Madison Square Park
On May 10, 1847 Madison Square Park was opened to the public and was made into an aristocratic center surrounded by nice shops and hotels. The park has a few statues.
- At the southeastern corner is the statue of Senator Roscoe Conkling, who froze to death during the great 1888 blizzard.
- In the southwestern part of the park is a statue of Secretary of State William Seward, who purchased the territory of Alaska from Russia in 1867.
Shake Shack
Entering the park from the south you will run into the Shake Shack, a popular permanent stand that serves hamburgers, hot dogs, shakes of course and even wine. You can sit under the trees, eat some local New York food and enjoy the scenery.
Broadway passes through many neighborhoods around Madison Square. There's Chelsea, Murray Hill, Midtown East and Midtown West, and New York Habitat ( http://www.nyhabitat.com ) has vacation rentals and furnished apartments all around these areas.

Herald Square
Walking north towards the area called Midtown, you will arrive at the next square on Broadway, Herald Square. Herald Square is formed by the intersection of Broadway with 6th Avenue, also known as Avenue of the Americas, with 34th Street. It takes its name from the now defunct newspaper called The New York Herald. In the northern part of this square, you can view the statue of the Bennett family, former owners of the New York Herald.
Greeley Square
As opposed to the triangular shape of the Flatiron Building, at this intersection you can find a triangular shaped park at Greeley Square. It's a cozy park with a restaurant kiosk, tables and chairs, where many professional workers from the nearby offices and shoppers from all over like to buy their food and relax.
Macy's Department Store
One of the main attractions in Herald Square is the Macy's department store, which occupies a full city block from Broadway to 7th Avenue.

Herald Square is formed by the intersection of Broadway, Sixth Avenue (officially named Avenue of the Americas) and 34th Street in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Named for the New York Herald, a now-defunct newspaper formerly headquartered there, it also gives its name to the surrounding area. The intersection is a typical Manhattan bow-tie square that consists of two named sections: Herald Square to the north (uptown) and Greeley Square to the south (downtown). Most non-New Yorkers know of it from the song Give My Regards to Broadway where the singer asks "remember me to Herald Square", or from the fact that Herald Square is the terminus for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, broadcast nationally each year by NBC-TV.
Greeley Square lies between West 32nd Street and West 33rd Street and between Broadway and Sixth Avenue, and is taken up almost entirely by a triangular park. It is named after Horace Greeley, who was the publisher of the New York Tribune, the Herald's rival newspaper. (The two papers later merged to form the New York Herald Tribune.) There is a statue of Greeley inside the park, created in 1890 by Alexander Doyle The small park has great deal of charm, it is planted with trees and shrubbery, enclosed by a wrought-iron fence, and provided with inviting chairs, tables and a restaurant kiosk.

Anthony Dominick Benedetto, better known as Tony Bennett (born August 3, 1926), is an American singer of popular music, standards, show tunes, and jazz. Bennett is also a serious and accomplished painter, having created works — under the name Benedetto — that are on permanent public display in several institutions. He is the founder of Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in New York City.
Raised in New York City, Bennett began singing at an early age. He fought in the final stages of World War II as an infantryman with the U.S. Army in the European Theatre. Afterwards, he developed his singing technique, signed with Columbia Records, and had his first number one popular song with "Because of You" in 1951. Several top hits such as "Rags to Riches" followed in the early 1950s. Bennett then further refined his approach to encompass jazz singing. He reached an artistic peak in the late 1950s with albums such as The Beat of My Heart and Basie Swings, Bennett Sings. In 1962, Bennett recorded his signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". His career and his personal life then suffered an extended downturn during the height of the rock music era.

Herald Square is formed by the intersection of Broadway, Sixth Avenue and 34th Street in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. It was named for the New York Herald, a newspaper originally headquartered there. The Square also gives its name to the surrounding area. The intersection is a typical Manhattan bow-tie square that consists of two named sections: Herald Square to the north (uptown) and Greeley Square to the south (downtown). Herald Square itself, at the north end of the square between West 34th Street and West 35th Street, was formerly the site of the New York Herald Building. It contains a huge mechanical clock whose mechanical structures were constructed in 1895 by the sculptor Antonin Jean Carles. The area around Herald Square along Broadway and 34th Street is a retail hub. Madison Square
Walking north along Broadway, you will reach a large intersection at Fifth Avenue and 23rd St. which creates a big square. This is Madison Square, named after the 4th U.S. President, James Madison. It was here in 1842 where some of the first amateur baseball games were ever played. They used a vacant lot in the north part of the square (corner of Madison Avenue & 27th Street). Later, the original New York Knickerbocker Baseball club, one of the first professional baseball teams, started right here.
Flatiron or Fuller Building
One of the most beautiful buildings in this square is the Fuller Building, designed by Daniel Burnham in the Beaux-Arts architectural style. It was named "Fuller" after the construction company that erected it in 1902 and it was one of the tallest skyscrapers ever built in New York City as of 1902. It was soon renamed the Flatiron Building because of its triangular shape which resembles a flat iron and gives the name Flatiron District to the area.
Madison Square Park
On May 10, 1847 Madison Square Park was opened to the public and was made into an aristocratic center surrounded by nice shops and hotels. The park has a few statues.
- At the southeastern corner is the statue of Senator Roscoe Conkling, who froze to death during the great 1888 blizzard.
- In the southwestern part of the park is a statue of Secretary of State William Seward, who purchased the territory of Alaska from Russia in 1867.
Shake Shack
Entering the park from the south you will run into the Shake Shack, a popular permanent stand that serves hamburgers, hot dogs, shakes of course and even wine. You can sit under the trees, eat some local New York food and enjoy the scenery.
Broadway passes through many neighborhoods around Madison Square. There's Chelsea, Murray Hill, Midtown East and Midtown West, and New York Habitat ( http://www.nyhabitat.com ) has vacation rentals and furnished apartments all around these areas.

This is a very short but interesting view including pedestrians, electric trolleys and a horse drawn omnibus.
Herald Square is formed by the intersection of Broadway, Sixth Avenue and 34th Street in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. It was named for the New York Herald, a newspaper originally headquartered there. The Square also gives its name to the surrounding area. The intersection is a typical Manhattan bow-tie square that consists of two named sections: Herald Square to the north (uptown) and Greeley Square to the south (downtown).
Herald Square itself, at the north end of the square between West 34th Street and West 35th Street, was formerly the site of the New York Herald Building. It contains a huge mechanical clock whose mechanical structures were constructed in 1895 by the sculptor Antonin Jean Carles.
The area around Herald Square along Broadway and 34th Street is a retail hub. The most notable attraction is the Macy's flagship department store, the largest in the United States.

Sorry if I didn't record the part from 21 Street-Queensbridge to Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue, I'll get that clip later on. Recorded on December 14, 2014 with an iPhone 5s Camera. Take a tour of Clyde Arc in Glasgow, Scotland - part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. Designed to last 120 years, the Clyde Arc Bridge in Glasgow, Scotland has been standing since 2006. Locally monikered the Squinty Bridge, this bridge accommodates 4 lanes of traffic as well as having a pedestrian walkway. The bridge spans a total of 169 meters, crossing over the River Clyde at a pronounced angle. Much of the bridge was built on a floating barge, while some pieces were constructed elsewhere and then shipped to the site. Broadway è una delle strade più famose del mondo. Attraversa in lunghezza tutta Manhattan, dalla punta più a sud fino alla punta più a nord dell'isola e continua nel Bronx, attraversando tanti quartieri di Manhattan.
Storia
Broadway è la strada più antica di New York City. Originalmente era un sentiero usato dai nativi americani che vivevano qui; poi fu usata dagli olandesi stabiliti qui che andavano a caccia nelle foreste del nord.
Madison Square
Camminando a nord lungo Broadway, si incontra una grande intersezione con Fifth Avenue e la 23 strada che crea una grande spazio o piazza. Questa è Madison Square, che ha preso il nome da James Madison, il 4 presidente degli USA.
Flatiron or Fuller Building
Uno degli edifici più belli di questa piazza o "square" è il Fuller Building, disegnato da Daniel Burnham in stile architettonico, Beaux-Arts. Fu chiamato "Fuller" come la società di costruzione che lo costruì nel 1902 e in quello stesso anno divenne il grattacielo più alto di New York City.
Fu rinominato Flatiron Building per la sua forma triangolare che ricorda un ferro da stiro e che ha anche dato lo stesso nome al quartiere circostante che viene chiamato tuttora Flatiron District.
Madison Square Park
Il 10 maggio 1847 Madison Square Park fu aperto al pubblico diventando un centro aristocratico circondato da negozi e alberghi eleganti. Il parco ha varie statue:
- Nell'angolo sud-est si trova la statua del senatore Roscoe Conkling, che morì assiderato durante il grande tempesta di neve del 1888.
- Nella zona sud-ovest del parco si trova la statua del Segretario di Stato William Seward, che comprò il territorio d'Alaska dalla Russia nel 1867.
Shake Shack
All'entrata sud del parco si incontra lo Shake Shack, un chiosco permanente molto conosciuto che è stato allestito per la vendita di hamburger, hot dog, frullati e perfino vino. Puoi sederti all'ombra degli alberi a mangiare alcune delizie gastronimiche di New York e ad ammirare il paesaggio.
Broadway passa per tanti quartieri vicini a Madison Square, tra cui Chelsea, Murray Hill, Gramercy, Midtown East e Midtown West. New York Habitat ( http://www.nyhabitat.com/it ) ha case per vacanze e appartamenti ammobiliati in tutte queste zone.

Questa è formata dall'incrocio di Broadway con Avenue of the Americas, anche conosciuta come 6 Avenue, e la 34 Strada. Prende il nome dall'ormai defunto quotidiano chiamato New York Herald. Nella parte nord di questa piazza puoi vedere la statua della famiglia Bennett, ex proprietaria del New York Herald.
Greeley Square
Al contrario della forma triangolare del Flatiron Building, a questo incrocio troverai un parco di forma triangolare, chiamato Greeley Square. Questo parco è piccolino e ha un chiosco-ristorante con tavoli e sedie dove impiegati che lavorano negli uffici di zona e visitatori che vengono qui a fare shopping vengono a comprare da mangiare e a rilassarsi. Greeley Square ha preso il nome da Horace Greeley, il proprietario del New York Tribune, il quotidiano rivale del New York Herald.
Grande Magazzino - Macy's
Una delle attrrazioni più famose di Herald Square è il grande magazzino, Macy's, che occupa un isolato intero della città, da Broadway fino alla 7 Avenue. Macy's vende di tutto nei suoi tanti piani di merce di tutti i tipi, da abbigliamento per donna, uomo, bambino, mobili e valigeria. Macy's fu fondato nel 1858 da Rowland Hussey Macy, un marinaio cacciatore di balene, che aveva un tatuaggio a forma di stella rossa sulla mano, che poi divenne il simbolo del negozio Macy's.

New York City is always one of my favourite city destinations. I had visited the Big Apple a few times before, but always for an extremely short period of time, and I really wanted to get to know this fascinating metropolis a little better. So I cashed in some Airmiles and booked a four-day trip to NYC from October 15 to 19, 2010. Immediately upon arrival at the LaGuardia Airport, I picked up a 7-day Metropass which would allow me to explore the city with unlimited public transit over the next few days.
During late afternoon rush hour it took me almost two hours by bus and subway to reach my abode for the next few days: the West Side YMCA at West 63rd Street, right across from Central Park, a perfect place for exploring New York City on a tight budget. I was going to meet my good friend Linda tomorrow, so the two of us were going to share a tight room with two bunk beds together. The room was not fancy, but it had everything I needed and the location was great.
During my first evening I strolled southwards past Columbus Circle to Times Square and was visually bombarded by the hundreds of brightly lit neon and LCD advertisements on NYC's most famous public space. The area was hustling and bustling with huge crowds who were enjoying the recently introduced pedestrian-only environment at Times Square. After a nice dinner at the bar at the Olive Garden I kept walking south on Broadway and was impressed with the additional pedestrian spaces that had been created along this iconic roadway between Times Square and Herald Square. After a quick peek at Macy's and the Empire State Building, I started my long walk back north past the New York Public Library.
A few minutes away I stopped at Grand Central Terminal which was framed by a brightly lit Chrysler Building looming overhead. Close to midnight my stroll also took me past Rockefeller Center where people were still skating and socializing. Back on Madison Avenue I admired the various upscale stores and explored the courtyard outside the New York Palace Hotel with its gorgeous view of St. Patrick's Cathedral. Walking further west to 5th Avenue I strolled past Bergdorf Goodman, the Plaza Hotel as well as a state-of-the-art Apple Store on the southeast corner of Central Park before I turned in for a good night's sleep.

Broadway est l'une des avenues les plus célèbres de New York. Elle s'étend à travers Manhattan, de la pointe sud nommée Bowling Green jusqu'au nord de l'île et continue dans le Bronx, traversant la majorité des quartiers de Manhattan.
Histoire de Broadway
La plus ancienne rue de la ville, Broadway était à l'origine une piste utilisée par les Indiens d'Amérique qui vivaient dans cette zone, les colons néerlandais l'ont par la suite empruntée pour aller chasser dans les forêts du nord.
Madison Square
En marchant vers le nord le long de Broadway, vous atteindrez une large intersection à hauteur de la cinquième avenue et de la 23rd St, qui crée une grande place ou square. C'est Madison Square qui doit son nom au 4ème président des Etats-Unis, James Madison.
Flatiron ou Fuller Building
L'un des plus beaux buildings de ce square est le Fuller Building, dessiné par Daniel Burnham dans un style Beaux-arts. Il tient son nom « Fuller » de la compagnie qui l'a construit en 1902, c'était à l'époque une des plus haut buildings jamais construit à New York. Il rapidement été renommé Flatiron Building en raison de sa forme triangulaire qui ressemble à un fer-à-repasser et a donné le nom de Flatiron District à cette zone.
Madison Square Park
Le 10 Mai 1847 Madison Square Park a été ouvert au public et est devenu un centre aristocratique entouré de boutiques et d'hôtels.
- Au coin sud-est se trouve une statue du sénateur Roscoe Conkling,
- Au coin sud-ouest se dresse une statue du secrétaire d'état William Seward qui acheta le territoire d'Alaska aux Russes en 1867.
Shake Shack
En entrant dans le parc par le sud, faites un arrêt au Shake Shack, un stand permanent très populaire qui sert des hamburgers, des hot-dogs, des milk-shakes bien entendu, et même du vin.
Broadway traverse plusieurs quartiers autour de Madison Square tels que Chelsea, Murray Hill, Midtown East and Midtown West et New York Habitat (http://www.nyhabitat.com/fr ) offre des locations de vacances ainsi que des appartements meublés dans tous ces quartiers.

Herald Square
Quelques pâtés de maisons plus au nord-ouest nous arrivons au prochain Square de Broadway: Le Herald Square, dans le quartier appelé Midtown, formé de l'intersection de Broadway avec la 6th Avenue, aussi appelé Avenue of the Americas, et la 34th Street. Il doit son nom au fameux journal, qui n'existe plus, The New York Herald. Dans la partie nord de ce square on peut admirer la statue de la famille Bennet, anciens propriétaires du New York Herald.
Greeley Square
Parc confortable avec un kiosque restaurant, tables et chaises où de nombreux employés des bureaux et boutiques des alentours viennent acheter à manger et se détendre. Greeley Square tient son nom d'Horace Greeley, le propriétaire du New York Tribune.
Macy's Department Store
Le grand magasin Macy's, qui occupe un pâté de maisons entier de Broadway à la 7th Avenue. Avec plusieurs étages, Macy's vends tout, des vêtements hommes, femmes et enfants en passant par les meubles et les bagages.
De nombreux autres lieux valent la peine d'être visités dans les environs de Broadway. Broadway est l'une des avenues les plus célèbres de New York. Elle s'étend à travers Manhattan, de la pointe sud nommée Bowling Green jusqu'au nord de l'île et continue dans le Bronx, traversant la majorité des quartiers de Manhattan.
Histoire de Broadway
La plus ancienne rue de la ville, Broadway était à l'origine une piste utilisée par les Indiens d'Amérique qui vivaient dans cette zone, les colons néerlandais l'ont par la suite empruntée pour aller chasser dans les forêts du nord.
Madison Square
En marchant vers le nord le long de Broadway, vous atteindrez une large intersection à hauteur de la cinquième avenue et de la 23rd St, qui crée une grande place ou square. C'est Madison Square qui doit son nom au 4ème président des Etats-Unis, James Madison.
Flatiron ou Fuller Building
L'un des plus beaux buildings de ce square est le Fuller Building, dessiné par Daniel Burnham dans un style Beaux-arts. Il tient son nom « Fuller » de la compagnie qui l'a construit en 1902, c'était à l'époque une des plus haut buildings jamais construit à New York. Il rapidement été renommé Flatiron Building en raison de sa forme triangulaire qui ressemble à un fer-à-repasser et a donné le nom de Flatiron District à cette zone.
Madison Square Park
Le 10 Mai 1847 Madison Square Park a été ouvert au public et est devenu un centre aristocratique entouré de boutiques et d'hôtels.
- Au coin sud-est se trouve une statue du sénateur Roscoe Conkling,
- Au coin sud-ouest se dresse une statue du secrétaire d'état William Seward qui acheta le territoire d'Alaska aux Russes en 1867.
Shake Shack
En entrant dans le parc par le sud, faites un arrêt au Shake Shack, un stand permanent très populaire qui sert des hamburgers, des hot-dogs, des milk-shakes bien entendu, et même du vin.
Broadway traverse plusieurs quartiers autour de Madison Square tels que Chelsea, Murray Hill, Midtown East and Midtown West et New York Habitat (http://www.nyhabitat.com/fr ) offre des locations de vacances ainsi que des appartements meublés dans tous ces quartiers.

Herald Square
Quelques pâtés de maisons plus au nord-ouest nous arrivons au prochain Square de Broadway: Le Herald Square, dans le quartier appelé Midtown, formé de l'intersection de Broadway avec la 6th Avenue, aussi appelé Avenue of the Americas, et la 34th Street. Il doit son nom au fameux journal, qui n'existe plus, The New York Herald. Dans la partie nord de ce square on peut admirer la statue de la famille Bennet, anciens propriétaires du New York Herald.
Greeley Square
Parc confortable avec un kiosque restaurant, tables et chaises où de nombreux employés des bureaux et boutiques des alentours viennent acheter à manger et se détendre. Greeley Square tient son nom d'Horace Greeley, le propriétaire du New York Tribune.
Macy's Department Store
Le grand magasin Macy's, qui occupe un pâté de maisons entier de Broadway à la 7th Avenue. Avec plusieurs étages, Macy's vends tout, des vêtements hommes, femmes et enfants en passant par les meubles et les bagages.

The Clyde Arc is supposedly the first step in a regeneration project for the areas on either side of the river.
Its unique curved design has made for structural problems in the past, but it stands strong today.
