Video game movies are set to make a big splash and we’ve got the details right now on Clevver
Newsfeed. We may be months away from Assassin’s Creed arriving in theaters, but a sequel is already being eyed. Video game movies have yet to reach the heights shared by their comic book counterparts, but that could all change this year with the release of big budget films like
Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed. The latter film is set to arrive in theaters in December and stars
Michael Fassbender as a man who explores the memories of his long lost ancestor to discover he is a descendant of a secret society of assassins. The film is based on the popular Ubisoft game franchise and in a recent interview with the film’s
Taiwanese co-financier Catchplay,
Variety has learned that a sequel is already in the early stages. In addition to an Assassin’s Creed sequel, Catchplay’s
Daphne Yang also revealed that a sequel is being eyed for another Ubisoft game turned movie,
Splinter Cell. That film is set to star
Tom Hardy as a spy who goes on secret spec-op missions. While no release date has been set, the film is currently planning a 2017 release with
Doug Liman directing, but that release could be pushed as
Liman is currently set to direct the
Channing Tatum Gambit movie for Fox. That film was set to arrive in theaters later this year, but has since been pushed to sometime next year. While the likelihood of Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell sequels actually getting made depends heavily on how the first films do, it’s nice to hear that studios are confident enough in the projects to be looking ahead at future films, but what do you think? Are you looking forward to the Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell movies and do you think they could help usher in a new era for video game films?
