I hope to promote the beauty of our underwater sea life in NZ, in order to help people understand why there is a need to protect our amazing waters.
FYI, the big Packhorse Crayfish that is shown in the Video was put back to fight another day. Aside from probably not tasting the best, it would have been bloody old!

Catamaran Impi is sailing around the world and now in New Zealand. Here we visit the Great Barrier Island and record some of the places we found interesting. I got invited on a fishing trip with Okuma fishing tackle and the boys from Smart Marine to head to Great Barrier Island on board the fishing charter vessel, Thor. Fishing the wild west coast, west Auckland. I headed out to the area north of Piha after some easterly patterns to find a gentle swell and promising looking ledges. Spectacular country, went looking for snapper, trevally and gurnard. Took the drone for a fly over the coast.

Barrier Islands, a coastal landform and a type of barrier system, are relatively narrow strips of sand that are parallel to the mainland coast. They usually occur in chains, consisting of anything from a few islands to more than a dozen. Excepting the tidal inlets that separate the islands, a barrier chain may extend uninterrupted for over a hundred kilometers, the longest and widest being Padre Island. The length and width of barriers and overall morphology of barrier coasts are related to parameters including tidal range, wave energy, sediment supply, sea-level trends and basement controls.
Chains of barrier islands can be found along approximately thirteen percent of the world's coastlines, some displaying different settings, suggesting that they can form and be maintained in a variety of environmental settings. Numerous theories have been given to explain their formations.
Explanations for the development of barrier islands have been proposed by numerous scientists over more than 150 years. They can be grouped into three major theories: offshore bar theory, spit accretion theory and submergence theory. No single theory can explain the development of all barriers distributed extensively along the world's coastlines. Scientists accept the idea that barriers, including other barrier types, can form by a number of different mechanisms.

Headed up to Tiri-tiri Matangi (Auckland, NZ) area to look for work up action and see if I could get into some topwater kingfish and snapper. I successfully fished a stickbait and then switched from jigs to bait for some good eating sized snapper.

It was a stunning day out fishing for snapper around Waiheke Island (Auckland, New Zealand). We got a full bag of fish on the soft baits and were done by lunch time.

Fishing the wild west coast, west Auckland. I headed out to the area north of Piha after some easterly patterns to find a gentle swell and promising looking ledges. Spectacular country, went looking for snapper, trevally and gurnard. Took the drone for a fly over the coast.

Heli-fishing at Great Barrier – this is certainly an experience for the bucket list. Amazing views and rich rock fishing action make it hard to beat. We came home with snapper and a kingfish that ate my carpenter stickbait. The drone footage came out really well of the rugged rock terrain too.

I got invited on a fishing trip with Okuma fishing tackle and the boys from Smart Marine to head to Great Barrier Island on board the fishing charter vessel, Thor. Jake the skipper was fantastic and we got into the hapuka and snapper and some mako sharks and other species.

Fishing the wild west coast, west Auckland. I headed out to the area north of Piha after some easterly patterns to find a gentle swell and promising looking ledges. Spectacular country, went looking for snapper, trevally and gurnard. Took the drone for a fly over the coast.

Heli-fishing at Great Barrier – this is certainly an experience for the bucket list. Amazing views and rich rock fishing action make it hard to beat. We came home with snapper and a kingfish that ate my carpenter stickbait. The drone footage came out really well of the rugged rock terrain too.

There was a lot of footage. 20 minutes of glory on the East Coast accumulated over a few years of year-around surf. Some Sandy footage in there and a few weird moments for good measure. It was all shot on a pretty old camera so it doesn't stand up to the newer HD cams, but it's still a good watch, I think. Thanks for checking it out...have fun out there boys and girls.
